The link between these worlds is Strada Statale 163 – the ‘road of 1,000 bends’ – commissioned by King Ferdinand II of Naples and completed in 1852. It hugs cliffs and deep gorges for 40km, slicing through lemon groves and whitewashed villages, rising and dipping above the shimmering sea. It is only ever wide enough for two lanes of traffic, with little room for manoeuvre, so traffic jams are unavoidable. Pros And Cons Of Staying In Positano

• Pros: its stunningly gorgeous. It has lots of little shops and alleyways. It has amazing restaurants and a couple beautiful beaches. The boat stops there. Its easy to visit the rest of the coast by bus. The stunning Path of the Gods hiking trail is easily accessible. There are many excellent hotels and restaurants. Its easy to get to Sorrento and Amalfi and Ravello. And finally, if you dont mind walking uphill and downhill, its small enough to get around completely on foot.
• Cons: unless youre walking on the beach, youre probably walking either uphill or downhill. Its extremely touristy. The hotels are expensive, not great value for money, and they sell out early. The beaches are busy and somewhat small. Its worth noting that parking is almost impossible.

• What you want to see and do. This is probably the most important factor that should influence where to stay on the Amalfi Coast. If you are here for a beach vacation and are mostly interested in swimming and beach bars, youll likely want to stay at a place like Positano or simply look for a really nice luxury hotel. Whereas if you are only interested in sightseeing, you may want to stay in Amalfi, or if your sightseeing plans also include Pompeii, Mt Vesuvius, or Capri Sorrento might be a better option, even though its not directly on the Amalfi Coast

• How much time do you have. This is another important factor that might influence your decision on where to stay. If you are visiting the Amalfi Coast for just a day, you dont have to stay here at all. If you have a few days in the area and want to see a lot, youll likely have different criteria for your accommodation than people who plan to spend a week here.

• Pool or beach access. Only very few hotels on Amalfi Coast have a pool or direct/easy access to a beach. So if this is important to you, your options will also be limited.

Lets make one thing clear: Sorrento is often grouped with the Amalfi Coast but is not, in fact, on the coast. Instead, this Grand Tour-era resort town is set on the Sorrentine Peninsula about halfway between Naples and the Amalfi Coast and is a popular cruise ship port and bus tour destination.

Its central location, ferry port, and Circumvesuviana train station make Sorrento one of the most popular towns to use as a base for exploring the entire coastline from Naples all the way down to Vietri sul Mare, the southernmost village on the Amalfi Coast. For this reason, the town can get completely overrun in the high season months between June and September, when the narrow lanes of the historic center are so packed that it makes it difficult to move around.

That said, there are two types of travelers who may want to consider using Sorrento as a base for a trip to the Amalfi Coast, especially in the spring or fall:

Best Time To Visit Amalfi Coast

Most visitors tour the Amalfi Coast during the summer between April and October. While it may be tempting to visit off-season due to lower prices and fewer visitors, keep in mind that many restaurants, shops and bars shut down as its not profitable to them to stay open. The experience isnt the same.

Many blogs recommend visiting Italy in May or September, as it can still be warm enough. However, most people already got a memo and come to Italy in September. In fact, this year September in Italy tends to be way busier than the summer.

Early May on the Amalfi Coast might be quite rainy and the beach isnt actually ready for visitors yet and pools might not be open or too cold to get in. While its still enjoyable, it might just not be ideal for some people youve been warned.

There are some great hotels that are good value for money. There are some excellent restaurants. Great hiking trails nearby. Not a bad option if you need a rental car. And finally, it has a cute beach.
• Cons: Its further down the coast. No high-end hotels.

Nerano The Secret Beach Cove Of Your Dreams

We stumbled across Nerano one day when we went exploring from SantAgata. This cute as a button seaside town is hidden away between Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast.

Its just how you imagine this region was in the 1950s. There are colorful umbrellas, rustic sea front bars and turquoise waves crashing in onto the pebbled beach.

Nerano is not the easiest place to get to but Im sure thats the way most people who love the place prefer it.

One day Ill spend a week there splashing in the sea and maybe hiring a boat to cruise along the coast. Maybe. It would be so hard to leave.

Once known as Reghinna Maior, this fishing town is both gorgeous and luxurious, and has amazing things to offer. One of the most notable things about Maiori is that it is the home of one of the largest beaches on the Amalfi Coast! An interesting trivia fact is that the beach increased in dimensions due to terrible floods in 1954, which destroyed the entire historic center! Another interesting destination point that makes Maiori stand out amongst other Amalfi Coast towns is the incredible Castle of San Nicola de Thoro-Plano, which dominates the landscape.

If youre looking for more than great beaches and restaurants on your search for where to stay on the Amalfi Coast, Maiori is probably your best option! Beyond the amazing castle, which is open to the public, you can take a trip down to see some catacombs in Santa Maria Olearia. Another added bonus of Maiori is that the town of Minori is only a few kilometers away. Maiori is an easy town to get around on foot in, which helps make it ideal when traveling with kids, and the large beach and historic landmarks make it a great choice of where to stay on the Amalfi Coast for all ages!

Tramonti Where To Stay In Amalfi Coast For Local Vibe

Tramonti is a region that consists of thirteen smaller villages clustered in the hills above Amalfi. Well inland, away from the pretty coastline that draws most visitors to the region, Atrani has far fewer tourists than the seaside towns.

Tramonti is famous for its vineyards and chestnut trees. You can find full-bodied wines, known as Tintore Wine.

Most visitors who stay in Tramonti do so for the hiking trails. Settled amongst valleys and mountains covered in olive groves and sheep farms, the Tramonti area is super scenic and a wonderful place to trek amongst the trees.

Aside from the naturally beautiful landscape, there is plenty for you to discover along the trails throughout Tramonti. The Grotta di Pietrapiana cave sits right at the edge of Tramonti, with religious statues and relics hidden inside.

The remains of the Santa Maria la Nova castle are a little more central. Meanwhile, the ruins of another ancient castle, Castello di Montalto, are more overgrown and concealed by trees, making finding it a fun challenge.

Other places of interest are Chapel of San Michele Arcangelo in Gete district, the Church of SantErasmo in Pucara district, and the Church of San Pietro Apostolo in Figline district.

Even though Tramonti is a less popular area with tourists, there are still plenty of places to stay. Its mostly B& Bs or family-run hotels rather than the five-star luxury you can find along the seafront. Its mostly super affordable too.
