See more about the USA: Where to Stay in Denver
Washington is one of the most rewarding tourist centers in the whole of the USA, with literally hundreds of fascinating things to see and do. By American standards, Washington is a relatively compact city of just under a million people.
This is good news for visitors because it means that whatever part of town you choose to stay in, you are not too far away from the major sights and attractions. Having said that, the majority of the galleries, museums and historic buildings of the city are located in an area of downtown called National Mall.
If youre only in Washington for a short time, then its a good idea to stay somewhere Downtown or in nearby suburbs like Capitol Hill or pretty waterfront Georgetown.
If youre traveling on a budget, then there are affordable and exciting districts not far from the center like Logan Circle, Palm circle, or Adams Morgan, which is the heart of the citys night scene.

Washington Dc With Kids: Family
When it comes to choosing a place to stay with your kids, look for a hotel that is convenient to the Metro, sightseeing attractions, restaurants, and amusements. A complimentary terrycloth robe and 24-hour room service might turn you on, but such amenities are of little consequence to youngsters. What’s important to them is that they’re close to food and fun: If there’s a refrigerator, restaurant, snack machine, pool, or shopping nearby, your kids will be happy staying almost anywhere.
Many of the District’s large hotel chains offer budget-minded traveling families, who occasionally opt to enjoy a light bite in their rooms rather than dine in a restaurant, the options of coffee bars, fast-food kiosks, or shops that carry snacks and light fare right in their lobbies.
Make sure your kids know the difference between food taken into the rooms and food taken out of them. Guests pay dearly for taking snacks and beverages from stocked refrigerators and minibars. If there’s no lock on yours, tell your kids that the contents are off limits unless they clear it with you first.
Getting the Most for Your Dollar
Weekday rates can drop 30% to 50% on weekends depending on occupancy, you might be able to cash in on weekdays as well. Hotels sometimes run unadvertised special promotions, but you won’t find out about them if you don’t ask. So speak up when you make a reservation.

Georgetown The Coolest Neighborhood To Stay In Dc
Georgetown is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods to find accommodation in Washington, D.C. This areas highlights include narrow cobbled streets and historic houses.
If you decide to stay in Georgetown, you can stroll along the Potomac River and enjoy one of the many bakeries, patisseries, and ice cream parlors in the area. In addition, there are very good restaurants and places of historical and cultural interest to visit.
I consider this neighborhood a good place to stay in D.C. if you have been to the city several times and you want to mingle with the locals rather than going to the tourist sights. However, keep in mind that it will take more than half an hour to get to the center on foot, so its not a place that I recommend if its your first time in the city. If we go when family or friends arent visiting us, this is the area we almost always choose.

Downtown Dc An Excellent Option To Stay In Dc
Downtown DC is one of the best places to stay in Washington, D.C. because it is the authentic center of the city, close to all the places of historical and cultural interest that you will surely want to visit. It takes no more than 10 minutes to walk to the National Mall, and you will have plenty of restaurants and cafes on hand.
I honestly like this area more than the National Mall itself, so whenever I find a good deal on accommodation in Downtown D.C., I stay there. However, thats usually difficult, since the prices for something decent in the center dont usually drop below $150, even during the off-peak travel season. This means that if youre going to spend many days in the city, your travel expenses will add up quickly.
2. Downtown DC, an excellent option to stay in D.C.
These are the hotels in Downtown, D.C. that I recommend:
- Premium option: Hyatt Place Washington D.C./White House

Where To Stay With Kids In Washington

Families traveling on a budget should keep in mind that hotels and motels in the suburbs are generally more economical than downtown accommodations. Look for a hotel with free parking, complimentary hot breakfast and rooms large enough for your family. Extras like a swimming pool, especially during Washingtons hot and humid summer, are a bonus for kids after a day of sightseeing.
The most convenient hotel to the National Mall with family-friendly options is the Holiday Inn Washington-Capitol a few blocks from the Air and Space Museum. Kids 18 years of age and younger stay free, and up to four kids age 11 and under eat free at the on-site restaurant. Note that there is an additional charge for parking. If you fly into Washington Reagan National Airport rather than drive, you can take the Metro almost door to door.
Check sites like VRBO and Airbnb for private homes or apartments to rent for your stay. You may find something more comfortable for your family thats convenient to Metro and costs less than a hotel.

The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial
This one is a favorite for young visitors who like exploring a series of trails and waterfalls that connect four outdoor galleries, one for each of FDRs presidential terms. Bronze sculptures depict his eventful years in office that span the Depression and World War II. One of the statues honors his wife, Eleanor another shows the president with his much-loved pet, a Scottish terrier named Fala. The wheelchair Roosevelt used after his bout with polio is not shown in the sculptures but is displayed in the visitor center.

Nestled just north of the bend in the Potomac River, the wonderful residential neighborhood of Georgetown is famous for storybook-style row houses and shady, tree-lined, cobbled streets. With plenty of walkways and metro in its center, the Georgetown neighborhood is very pedestrian and bike-friendly, so families can easily explore the area.
Whilst the icons of downtown DC is just a 10min drive east, Georgetown itself is sizzling with urban culture and has plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy. The Draftsman Charlottesville Va
Boutique elegance in a convenient Charlottesville locationDistance + Time: 116 miles, 2.5 hours
Our latest find in Charlottesville, The Draftsman, is a boutique beauty ideally situated between UVA and the downtown pedestrian mall. The vibe at this Marriott Autograph Collection property is hip and friendly, with design references to Thomas Jefferson and Cvilles history. A new restaurant, The Ridley, opened downstairs replacing the former Renewal.
The free trolley to downtown stops right in front of the hotel, or you can enjoy the easy half-mile walk to the pedestrian mall. In the other direction, visit the historic rotunda, and take a leisurely stroll through the academical grounds of the University of Virginia. UVA and nearby Monticello make up the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Virginia.
