Best Places To Stay In Appenzell For Every Budget

Best Things to Do in and Around Geneva, Switzerland

For all history buffs, theres nothing better than visiting a destination that takes you back in time. The most traditional village in Switzerland is Appenzell. Picture a fairy-tale-like setting with colorful facades and archaic architecture, youll see what Switzerland looked like a very long time ago.

I actually stayed in Appenzell for more than a week because the Alpstein region is just two stops away by train and Appenzell is the biggest town nearby. Alpstein, in my opinion, is the best hiking loop in Switzerland. There are a few good bakeries and pizza joints in Appenzell to cure your hunger before and after hiking. Other than that, it is a pretty quiet, quaint Swiss town.

How To Find A Home In Geneva

When looking for a new home in and around Geneva, the best place to start is online. Youll probably want to start the process well ahead of time as it can take a while to get sorted. Just be aware that youll need to have an address in the city before registering with the local municipality. And if you want to live over the border, then youll need other documentation.

To get you started, here are a few Swiss websites to give you an idea of what to expect:

As you probably already know, Geneva isnt the cheapest place in the world to find accommodation. For this reason, most newcomers choose to rent somewhere to begin with. This can help you get a better idea of the city and where you would like to live. If youre arriving with a family, then you might want to enlist the help of a local realtor to help. Alternatively, if youre moving alone, there are plenty of flat-share options in the city. You can begin your search on the local Facebook groups or by checking out WGZimmer and Craigslist. But as ever with these sites, be aware of scams and always take precautions before transferring any money.

The Old Town and its surrounding neighbourhoods have several excellent hotels, with the added pleasure of staying at the heart of historic Geneva. A short way from the cathedral and the Maison Tavel and right next to the row of cannons, you can stay and eat at Les Armures, a charming boutique hotel named after the armoury that once stood there. Its both a hotel and a well-known restaurant for traditional Swiss mountain food like cheese fondue. The Old Town is worth visiting all year round, with its Roman ruins in the cathedral crypt and its 400-year old houses, but during the annual Geneva music festival , its twisted streets and intimate courtyards come alive with music of all traditions. It is not known for its shopping, but several small antique shops, art galleries and curios dot the narrow streets.

Past the University and the Parc des Bastions with its Reformation Wall, two other boutique hotels, the Tiffany and the Cour des Augustins, cater to travellers drawn to a lively and cultural area, vibrant with museums, cafes and restaurants. The nearby Plaine de Plainpalais boasts the largest flea market in Europe, every Wednesday and Saturday.
