Best Area To Stay In Key Largo

You Just Want To Escape The City: Key Largo

Best Place to Stay in Key Largo – Bay Harbor Lodge

The unofficial grand entrance to the Florida Keys, Key Largo is just an hour south of Miamibut when you get there, you feel like youre in a whole other world. In quiet Key Largo, life is all about the water. Its bordered by Florida Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, and its home to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, which is a part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and home to the oldest underwater preserve in the U.S. Its both the longest key and a hub for South Florida water sports, so go here for scuba diving, snorkeling, sport fishing, dolphin encounters, kayaking, paddle boarding, boating and more.

Where to stay: Get comfy at Playa Largo, a luxury Autograph Collection hotel at Mile Marker 97 that fuses the modern conveniences of the Magic City with that je ne sais quoi about the serene Florida Keys. As soon as you walk in, the valet attendant will hand you one of the hotels signature pineapple mojitos. From then on, trust us: Youre in paradise.

Best Islands To Stay In Florida Keys

Yes, I said 800 islands but this is more of a fact number because, in reality, most of them have really a tiny size and no inhabitants.

In this guide, I focus on the best islands to stay in the Florida Keys for a holiday.

In the list below you will find the top 5 areas. These are where you will find accommodations, activities, restaurants, cafes and tourism infrastructure.

From your island, you can explore other inhabited islands by boat, or just drive your car through the 42 bridges to explore the hidden beaches, awesome snorkeling points and the family-oriented attractions of the Florida Keys.

Key West Historic District

The Key West Historic District, also known as Old Town Key West is a U.S. historic district encompassing approximately 5400 acres and containing 2489 historic buildings and structures.

Old Town Key West covers roughly all of the western half of the island and it is where the central business district and the majority of the tourist attractions are located.

The north side of the Key West Historic District is dominated by the Historic Seaport, while its western edge is home to the lively Duval Street neighborhood.

As you move east from Duval, Old Town Key West is actually a quiet area, characterized by its historical mansions, palm tree-lined residential streets, and secluded inns and B& Bs.

Other than the attractions near Duval and the Historic Port, Old Town Key West is home to the Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea, the Key West Cemetery, the Key West Firehouse Museum, Nancy Forresters Secret Garden, and Bayview Park.

Nestled midway down the Keys is Hawks Cay Resort in Duck Key. The sprawling 60-acre complex reopened in August 2018 after renovations to fix damages caused by Hurricane Irma the year before. The atmosphere here is family-friendly with the option of staying in the chilled-out, luxe main hotel or self-catering villas. But there are plenty of places for grown-ups to retreat to hang out in the spa, by the adults-only pool or book dinner for two at one of the resorts excellent restaurants.

Hawks Cay Resort

A relatively new addition to Key West, Oceans Edge Key West Hotel and Marina is on fast-developing Stock Island, four miles east of the old town. Theres a complimentary hourly shuttle, but with six ocean-front pools and an open-air waterside restaurant and bar, you probably won’t want to leave. The charming Key West architecture is the inspiration for the buildings here, and suites and rooms are vast.
