Even though people are drawn to Milan for the shopping, most are pleasantly surprised to find a city full of unexpected sights and experiences that go far beyond hitting the shops. Breathtaking historical buildings, centuries-old churches, and an impressive collection of galleries and renaissance art, Milan is sure to keep you busy, shopaholic or not.

Milans main attraction is undoubtedly the gothic-inspired Duomo , which is slap-bang in the city centre, with streets radiating out from it. The citys neighbourhoods are split into different zones arranged in a circle around the city centre and Duomo, with the city gates and their eponymous metro stations serving as convenient landmarks when youre trying to navigate.

Porta Nuova And Isola Staying Near Porta Garibaldi Station

This district gets its name from the new gate that was built by Napoleon. It is close to Garibaldi and represents one of Italys best urban regeneration projects. There are significant landmarks in the neighborhood such as Gae Aulenti Square, a famous Italian architect, the impressive UniCredit Tower, and the Bosco Verticale complex.

The complex has two residential towers, one over 350 feet high, the other around 250 feet. It is an ecological masterpiece and includes around 900 trees. Since 2014, it has attracted many visitors and tenants.

Porta Garibaldi is the second largest train station in Milan with direct trains to Milano Malpensa Airport. To get to Milano Linate and Orio Al Serio/Bergamo airports, you have to change at the Central Station.

Visitors and locals all enjoy the nightlife, dining, and shopping opportunities. It still remains one of the lesser-known districts of Milan yet has much to offer.

Foodies will want to check Eataly Smeraldo, a huge emporium where you find a Michelin-starred restaurant and many great Italian cuisines. The pedestrian area of Corso Como is lined with bars and boutique restaurants, great for nightlife.

Located north of Porta Garibaldi station, is the trendy, up-and-coming area of Isola. Its developing from a working-class district to a vibrant hipster area. It has vibrant nightlife, chic boutiques, and fine-dining spots.

Why Stay In Porta Romana

Like porta Garibaldi, Porta Romana is a former city gate and dates back to the 16th century. This often overlooked neighbour near the city centre has a lot to offer in terms hipster spots with Bar Luce designed by Wes Anderson, a tram converted into a sauna, Milans only thermal baths, and lots of take-out only food establishments to pick from. If you like shopping, then Viale Monte Nero Shopping Street is a haven with Italian design and handcrafted goods galore. There are plenty of bars in the area and its within walking distance to the Duomo. Overall its far cheaper than the very centre of Milan making it a little easier for those on a budget without compromising on things to do.

Great location. Comfortable beds. Friendly staff. Clean. Our room was advertised as having a fan, and we actually had air-conditioning which was a bonus . Double glazed windows, so the room was very quiet. Private bathroom/shower also good. Great value for the price. Hotel is on 1st floor . Only 3 or 4 steps to navigate your suitcase up to the lift, compared to other hotels in other cities in Italy at similar price. I would stay at this hotel again.

Best Areas To Stay In Milan

Milan is a massive and sprawling city. Thankfully, most of the citys main attractions, luxury hotels and historic buildings are located within Zone 1. Milan does boast an extensive and efficient public transit system, although best explored on foot. Whether you choose to travel by tram, bus, or metro, youre never very far away from anywhere.

As with any big city, certain neighbourhoods cater more to specific interests. Are you looking to enjoy Milans high-end luxury scene? Do you want to dance the night away at one of Italys most famous clubs?

Perhaps youre interested in spending your time exploring Milans major tourist attractions or Milans many museums and art galleries. No matter what youre interested in, theres a neighbourhood in Milan thats perfect for you.

Here are the best neighbourhoods in Milan broken down by interest for your stay.

Milan Neighbourhoods To Avoid

Best Places To Visit In Milan Italy

The areas you want to avoid during your stay in Milan are mostly in the suburbs, outside the edge of the city:

  • Quarto Oggiaro: no much improvement for the last 40 years I think. It is the area controlled by the drug dealers. I ended up there once by mistake and likely I made it out without problems.
  • Barona and Corvetto: not as bad as Quarto Oggiaro
  • Via Padova: a long street with a few bars and clubs, popular mostly with foreigners. Unfortunately, its famous also to be a problematic part of Milan
  • Lorenteggio: drugs and underground business

Via Gola, close to the Navigli, and Corso Buenos Aires in Milan Centre are also not suggested at night. They are probably not as dangerous as the above suburbs, however, they become quite dodgy in the late hours of the day.

Where To Stay In Milan For One Night

The best place to stay in Milan for one night is close to Central Station. In this way, you minimize the time back and forward with the bags, which is always a pain.

Even if you have a late flight out, you can always leave your luggage at the accommodation and pick it up on the way to the airport.

If you are flying to/from Milan using the Linate or the Bergamo/Orio Al Serio airport then book your hotel close to Milano Centrale,

You can catch from there a direct bus to both airports. Very handy, especially if you have an early flight to catch.

For an exclusive dinner book at the Terrazza Gallia, the rooftop of the Excelsior, facing the station square. One of the top culinary experiences in Milan.

Pizzeria Napule is a great, more affordable, option.

The Monkey Cocktail Bar has an unusual service. There is no drinks list, you talk with the cocktail maker and he will make one for you based on what you like. Hit or miss, but definitely an experience.

If you are flying out from Malpensa airport the I suggest to book your hotel close to Porta Garibaldi station, more fashionable, newer and trendy then Central Station

There are plenty of options for drinks and food in Corso Como, the place to be for aperitivo and dinner.

The Antica Locanda Solferino is a great accommodation for a one night stay in Milan due to its proximity to major transit stations.

The beautiful, contemporary-themed hotel offers amazing street views.

The stop for the Airport Shuttle Bus is meters away, so handy.

Why Avoid San Siro

You are slightly removed from the city in a quieter up-and-coming residential area, youll see lots of local Milan life but will have to take the subway to the areas with more action. The accommodation here is more residential, mid-range so there arent as many luxury stays or dining options in the area.

Other Places To Stay In Milan

You may decide that you want to stay in an area within easy reach of the main city centre, but away from its crazy bustle and high prices. There are a number of other neighbourhoods to choose from when staying in Milan, including in the centre. These include:

Brera is a lively district located by Milans city centre. It is known for being a small haven in a city known mainly for its pragmatic lifestyle: a web of narrow roads surrounding the Pinacoteca di Brera – the state-run academy of fine arts founded in 1776 – populated by artists, students, street performers and magicians.

Beautiful cobbled pavements and historic buildings add to the bohemian atmosphere, making this enchanted district the perfect place to stay to get a taste of Milans arty and eccentric side.

Brera never sleeps. During the day the districts shops – a nice integration of modernity and tradition – attract residents and tourists alike. The antiques market that takes place every third Sunday of the month is a beloved institution. But Breras authenticity shines brightest in the moonlight. From happy hour until nightcap, hundreds of little bars, restaurants and ice cream shops serve excellent cocktails and cuisine, accompanied by the melodic sound of Italian chatter.

The skyscrapers, the new residential complexes, as well as many other buildings in the area integrate high-tech and environmentally sustainable features.
