This Was Our First Time In Montreal And We Were Pleasantly

This was our first time in Montreal and we were pleasantly surprised! Everyone was very friendly and willing to assist when necessary. Most people spoke both English and French, which was very helpful to us as we are not bilingual. The transportation system was easy to use and navigate. We purchased an unlimited pass, which gives you access to the Metro from Monday-Sunday. It cost us $34 each, which is a small price to pay if you are planning on going to different places throughout the city. We visited the Montreal Olympic Stadium, which was very cool to see. We also went to the Biodome and Botanical Gardens, which are relatively close. We enjoyed all three experiences. Our highlights: Paddle boating at the Port, walking the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal, Le Petit Naivre, and the Maze! Take the 200+ step staircase to the top of Mount Royal.. Best views of the city, but be prepared: its quite a hike. Overall we had a great trip and would definitely return. If you are coming from Toronto, a stop at the 1000 Islands National Park is a must. Perfect way to cool down and take a break before your long drive home.

Our Favourite Area: Old Montreal

Old Montreal is one of the oldest districts in Montreal, as well as one of the best areas to stay in Montreal.

Among the attractions of Old Montreal, there are museums, emblematic fortifications dating back to the 19th-century and buildings that still preserve their 17th-century architecture.

A curious fact about this area is that Old Montreal, or Vieux Montreal in French, was the place where the city was founded.

Old Montreal and its cobbled streets also house French-style cafes, the Notre Dame Cathedral and many shops for shopping lovers.

This district can be covered on foot, bus or bicycle. Similarly, a good alternative is to take a boat through the coastal area, known as Old Port.

Old Montreal is one of the best areas to stay in Montreal since it offers a mix of old and new, nightlife and French colonial charm.

That big city feeling will envelop you with the rushing pedestrians, speeding motorists, and the largest concentration of skyscrapers in the city.

But just because youve suddenly found yourself surrounded by suits doesnt mean that there isnt also a more cultural side to the neighborhood. Downtown offers an array of unique museums, cafes, bars, theaters, universities, and even shopping options in an underground part of the city.

Where To Stay In Montreal: An Introduction From Pamela

Montréal is vibrant and loud, classic and historic. It is a cosmopolitan city with enough French flair that one could easily forget they are in Canada a characteristic that many French-Canadians are proud to project.

This is the city people flock to when they are looking for excitement, laughter, delicious food, art, fashion, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Over the years, I have transitioned into a passionate francophile, and while I chose to live in Québec City, I ventured into Montréal on a monthly basis to explore and eat and shop and soak up as much vitality as I possibly could.

I chose to live in Québec City because it is quiet and charming and feels like a snuggly boyfriend. Montréal, on the other hand, feels more like a wild passionate love affair that will penetrate every single inch of your body.

During the day, I am often exploring a neighbourhood or two: shopping in boutiques, sitting on a café patio sipping a tea and nibbling on a buttery croissant, looking for new bistros or pâtisseries to try, admiring the neighbourhood architecture especially the houses with the long wrought iron staircases in Mile End. Once the sun goes to sleep, I hit up a local micro-restaurant or bistro for dinner and then a night filled with wine bars or dance clubs or outdoor art exhibits or crazy festivals or all of the above.
