Summer may not officially begin until June 21, but Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of the season. So this weekend, it’s time to bring your summer whites out of storage and plan a jaunt to the Hamptons.
Of course, not everyone owns their own cottage by the bay, but if you want to spend a weekend experiencing the summer destination where in-the-know New Yorkers go, here’s where to stay.
Do People Live In The Hamptons All Year
Yes, people live in the Hamptons year-round. In summer months, the population triples because of the summer attractions and beautiful weather. During the winter, the weather is very cold and many Hamptons businesses will close, waiting for the vacationers to come in the spring.
During the busy summer, most restaurants and hotels will hire temporary help to make as much money as possible before the slower winter season.
Pro Tip: if youre open to seeing the Hamptons while working and want to make some extra cash, you could go and work in the hospitality industry which can be quite lucrative. Lots of these establishments will provide housing! Check out Gurneys Resort

Where To Stay In The Hamptons
The Hamptons are a group of towns clustered along the shore of Long Islands South Fork, but they are so much more than a geographic entity. For decades, the Hamptons is a term that acts as a catch-all for glamor, glitz, and relaxation.
The Hamptons is a region made up of two townships and several small towns. The two main townships are East Hampton, known for its old money reputation, and more laid-back Southampton.
Other famous villages that make up the Hamptons region are Sag Harbor, Montauk, Bridgehampton, and Shinnecock Hills.
Located a short drive away from New York City, the Hamptons have been the summer playground for the citys elite for years. Even today, celebrities from Ina Garten to the Real Housewives of New York summer here.
We mere mortals can visit the wealthier towns in the Hamptons or stay in some of the more affordable areas that still give off plenty of glamor. This doesnt mean that the Hamptons are just about glamor and celebrity.
Real people live here, some continuing the centuries-long tradition of fishing and farming that kept these communities alive before wealthy New Yorkers began coming here to escape the heat.
Many historic parts of the Hamptons feel more like parts of New England than New York. Today, there is something for everyone in the Hamptons. Many people come here for the natural beauty, including the beaches and inland hikes.

East Hampton Where To Stay In Hamptons For The First Time
Get ready to spot some celebrities!
This cute village is located east of Sag Harbor but west of Montauk and Amagansett. Its a top vacation spot for a lot of singers, actors, and artists. It is also known as the Soho of Long Island and besides the fact that it has that incredible old American village feeling, it is also filled with tons of restaurants, shops, and lets not forget the beautiful beaches.
Main Street is where youll shop till you drop! The street is full of quaint friendly local stores waiting to dress you for your next house party in the village, plus you get a chance to buy some cool souvenirs. Either way, this place has a great vibe and its super well-equipped.
Now, we all know that the Hamptons beaches are famous! There are five beaches in the East End, and keep in mind that if youre visiting between May and September, parking is only allowed with a permit so a better choice would be to walk to the beach or get a bike!
My favorite ones are definitely Main Beach and Two Mile Hollow beach. Main Beach is for sure the most popular one in this part of town as it has the most facilities like sunbeds, some local bars, and incredible soft sand. Two Mile Hollow beach is also super friendly but a bit quieter than Main Beach.
