Santa Croce is the area of Venice just in front of Santa Lucia station, right on the other side of the Grand Canal, and where you find Piazzale Roma, the area where you leave the car if driving into Venice.

Compared with other areas it has fewer landmarks but it can be a handy place to stay if you need easy access to your car or the train.

This is still a central area of Venice so if you get hotels close to San Polo, rather than Piazzale Roma, you still get the full Venice experience.

San Marco Where To Stay In Venice For First Time Visitor

San Marco is the most central of all the districts on the central Venetian islands. If you want to make sure you are staying within just a few minutes walk of many of Venices major attractions, the San Marco area is ideal.

With so much to see and do in the immediate area, San Marco is perfect for first-time visitors, shorter breaks, and weekend trips. You can maximize your time spent taking in the tourist attractions, with minimal time wasted traveling between them.

The caveat to being such a conveniently central location is that it is a very touristy sestiere, especially from March-October. If you are hoping for a quiet and peaceful area to stay in Venice, this is probably not the best place to consider.

As the oldest district in Venice, this is where you will find many of the citys most historic attractions. You will also find plenty of charming side streets to explore, each lined with historic buildings.

Cannaregio is the largest sestiere (neighborhood of Venice, both by size and population. It is chock full of history, tradition and many of Venices most beautiful buildings. It spans from San Marco to the Grand Canal and the Lagoon covering much of the northern part of the city.

Part of this area is located just a few minutes walk from the Piazzale Roma, so it has great transport links and is easy to get to and get around from.

The Fondamenta della Misericordia is a particularly good street to make a base with its proximity to Piazzale Rome and the airport buses on one end and heading towards San Polo and Rialto at the other.

Hotels have usually been cheaper in this neighborhood of Venice, but have been going up in price recently with several hotels getting refits as visitors realize more what a good spot for a base it is.

Dating back to the 13th century, Castello is the citys largest sestieri that grew up around a naval dockyard. Youll see nonnas from their balcony spying on the neighbors or kids kicking around soccer balls in the piazza, called campi in Venice.

The western part of the neighborhood feels more touristy, as it borders San Marco. But the eastern edge teems with thrift shops, bars, and specialty food stores selling dried meats and artisanal cheeses. Keep in mind if you stay in the heart of Castello, it can take 10-20 minutes to walk to some of the most popular attractions in town.
