What You Need To Know Before Booking A Hotel In New York City
- New York hotel rooms are small. I mean really small. It is not uncommon to pay $200-300USD for 160-170 square feet. This usually comes as a shock to most first-time visitors so pack accordingly.
- Room Rates are expensive. In fact, budget hotels are almost non-existent. You can expect to pay around $200 USD/night for mid-range hotels in a good location.
- Book Early. NYC is an incredibly popular destination and good hotels fill up fast. Our suggestion is to book at least 3 months out if you can. More if you are traveling during peak season.
- Be aware of Hotel Tax and Occupancy Fees. As stated above, the city charges these fees on top of the regular room rates. So make sure to take this into consideration when you budget. We have paid $60 extra for a fee at the Intercontinental Times Square and W Times Square
- Try to stay close to a subway station with access to multiple subway lines. This will make getting around the city easier and faster.

The Brooklyn Bridge is just as quickly reached as the Staten Island Ferry and my beloved Grand Banks in the adjacent Chelsea on the Hudson River.
This is a great place to stay even with kids. Its great here because its pretty quiet in the evenings.

About New York City Hotels
There are more hotel rooms than ever in New York City, as exciting new properties continue to open their doors not only in Manhattan but in Brooklyn and the outer boroughs as well. But does that mean that New York is cheap? Well, we wouldnt say cheap, but you can still find some deals, especially if youre not set on a specific property or neighborhood, and if you dont mind a few extra minutes of commuting time.
Hotels continue to slash rates based on market sensitivityespecially if you and all of those other Internet-savvy shoppers are willing to wait until the last minute. That said, if you want to stay in a specific place and the rate seems reasonable, book itit’s just as likely to go up, especially during peak seasons .
How to choose? The first thing to consider is location. Many New York City visitors insist on staying in the hectic Midtown areaand options are improving therebut other neighborhoods are often just as convenient. Less touristy areas, such as Gramercy, the Lower East Side, the Upper West Sideeven Brooklynprovide a more realistic sense of New York life, too.
Also consider timing: the least expensive months to book rooms in the city are January and February. If you’re flexible on dates, ask the reservationist if there’s a cheaper time to stay during your preferred traveling monththat way you can avoid peak dates, like Fashion Week and the New York City Marathon. Be sure to ask about possible weekend packages that could include a third night free.

The Carlyle Upper East Side
If the Carlyle ever closed, an iconic bit of the city would be lost along with itthats how synonymous this storied hotel is with the soul of New York. Its where Princess Diana stayed during her royal visit in the 1980s, and where her son Prince William returned with his new bride Kate Middleton two decades later. John F. Kennedy stayed there so much that it was dubbed the New York White House. After he was assassinated, Jackie lived there for three months. Bemelmansnamed after Madeline creator Ludwig Bemelmans, who painted murals on its wallsremains the most famous bar in the city. Theres a documentary about it, books about it, and even a clothing line about it.
That doesnt mean it’s outdated or stuffy, by the way: with interiors by Thierry Despont and Tony Chi, the Carlyle encompasses both old-world charm and the modern day.
And since its within walking distance of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, The Frick, and Central Park, youre at most minutes away from the citys best cultural and leisure offerings.

Central Park hotels are abundant but do tend to span the higher price point bracket. A budget hotel around Central Park could cost more than a Mid Range hotel in Times Square.
We stayed at 1 Central Hotel and it was fantastic. The materials of wood with wrought iron were elegant and relaxing. It reminded us of when we stayed in traditional Ryokans in Japan.
The Whitby Hotel has a 9.5 rating, which is the joint highest Booking.com rating in New York City . We enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea in the Whitby Hotel bar area.

Brooklyn Where To Stay In New York City For Return Visitors
Brooklyn is renowned for its diverse residential neighborhoods. The most populated borough of New York City is huge and covers over 3 times the land area of Manhattan Island.
The Dumbo area close to Brooklyn Bridge is extremely touristy but not in a gimmicky way like Times Square. However, the area we recommend you consider staying in Brooklyn is Williamsburg.
If youre looking for hipster, bars spilling out onto streets, artsy, chilled and quite frankly awesome, Williamsburg is the place you should book. You can always get a subway into Manhattan.
The reason we say Brooklyn / Williamsburg is where to stay in New York City for return visitors is because most first timers will stay in Manhattan, explore Brooklyn and Williamsburg, then say Ahh, next time we will stay here.

For Late Arrivals And Early Departures: Twa Hotel At Jfk Airport
Once you land in New York City, you can probably add an hour or more to get to your destination. And, depending on which airport you fly into, and the neighborhood you stay in, it could cost you upwards of $100 for a taxi at rush hour. Thats why the newly opened TWA Hotel at JFK airport is a blessing, but a clear cut above the standard-fare airport hotel. Its directly attached to the airport, for one, but its also a visual throwback to the 1960s, the heydays of air travel. It has a whopping 512 rooms, some of them with runway views. Theres a rooftop infinity pool, the worlds biggest hotel gym , museum exhibits to attract guests and long layovers alike, a fully restored Connie airplane-turned cocktail bar, a wall-to-wall Twister game room, and an outdoor roller skating/ice-skating rink , which alternate based on the season. Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges has crafted a menu for TWAs Paris Café, rounding out the best airport hotel stay you ever imagined. You might even add it to your city attractions list, checking in a full day early to enjoy it all. In the very least, its a picturesque and memorable place to crash before you relocate to the city the following morning, or to cap your stay before an early morning blast off.

Cheap Accommodation In New Jersey
New Jersey is another state, but is located right across from Manhattan on the other side of the Hudson River.
Jersey City is right across from Manhattan and especially the hotels right at the water habe a beautiful view of the Manhattan Skyline. However, the hotel prices are not cheaper than in Manhattan, simply because you can get there pretty fast by subway.
If you really want to save money, you should look at the hotels in Newark. They dont offer a view on Manhattan, since Newark is located a little further outside, but a good room costs between 100 and 150 euros.
You should definitely book a hotel close to the Newark Penn Station. With the red PATH Train Line you will need 22 minutes to the World Trade Center. A one way ticket costs $ 2,75 .
Pros of staying in Newark:
- You get more for your money than in Manhattan
- If you land in Newark, you are closer to the airport
Cons of staying in Newark:
- You will need 20 to 30 minutes to get to Manhattan
- You dont have a view on the skyline, so you dont get that authentic New York feel
Our personal hotel recommendations for Newark:

I Love Ny I Have Been Coming Once A Year Since Graduation
I love NY, I have been coming once a year since graduation from college. There is always something new to do and every time I go I stay longer and spend less. Learn from the locals and get a Metro cards, if I did nothing else I wore good walking shoes and I loaded up my Metro Card. Enjoy your time here, the city that never sleeps and neither will you since you want to do everything and most things are open LATE. You have to try the Dessert Bar-Spot. They have many locations. I never ate out of a planters pot before, but I liked it! I love the Village, Harlem and Broadway. I love to walk and see the sites and you have to go to the museum. There is so much rich architecture and history here, there is never a dull day in NYC. A great activity for a solo travel was participating in the hostel tours for $10 and good walking shoes I saw the city with a local tour guide and on another day a world renowned tour guide. I would have paid $50-100 easy for each tours and been okay with it for what I got for $10 each! NYC Hostel is the best place to stay, get a nice breakfast, clean bunk, fresh sheets and towels. You are NEVER in your room, so go with the basics and you are SO close to the Metro and the Post Office. Be practical and travel like you would live at home! Best money spent this trip! I was also well withing my budget. Which never happens when I come to NY.
