Where To Stay For History: The Gothic Quarter
Barcelonas Gothic Quarter, or Barri Gòtic in the local parlance, is oozing with two thousand years of it. You can dine at the oldest restaurant in town Can Culleretes and then stroll the narrow streets, taking in the ancient ambiance. And dont miss the La Boquería, the famed food market, as well as the towering Barcelona Cathedral.

The Poble Sec and Sant Antoni neighbourhoods are a good choice for budget travellers due to their proximity to the city centre and generally lower prices. Both neighbourhoods also offer a wide range of places to eat and drink at all price points.

Gracia The Best Neighbourhood For Quieter Small Town Life
Click here to download the full size PDF of the above map on where to stay in Barcelona.
A lot of people talk of Gracia as having a small town feel despite being in the center of Barcelona.
You can find corner shops, grocery stores, traditional fishmongers and butchers and lots of small familyÂrun bakeries. Because it is off-the-beaten-path in Barcelona and does not have a lot of sights, Gracia has remained largely unaffected by the tourism boom.
The neighbourhood is located above Diagonal and north of Eixample and is made of a mix of pedestrian and open streets.
Most of the buildings here are occupied by long term Barcelonian families who bring the neighbourhood to life during the Festa Major de Gracia, the annual neighbourhood patron saintâs party. You will find hip shops, ecoÂfriendly grocery stores, movie theatres showing alternative films and bohemian galleries.
Many longer term visitors consider Gracia the best area to stay in Barcelona. If you plan to live in Barcelona for a few weeks or months that may surely be the case.
Gracia is relaxed, laidÂback and has that smallÂtown Catalan feeling with all the upsides of a culturally rich and happening big city minus the hassle of the touristÂfilled areas. You will get to know your neighbours and have a more authentic time as a local. If you are visiting on a typical shorter sightseeing trip, I would recommend Eixample or Ciutat Vella instead.

Gluten Free Travel Guides
I have gluten free travel guides for cities around the world. Each of these guides is based on personal experience, although some of them are from trips that happened before I had started this blog. Which also happens to be before I started taking pictures of literally everything I eat. So some are lacking food pictures.
I started this site after I sent my friend my Excel spreadsheet that I used to plan a trip to Berlin and Amsterdam, and she replied you know, you should totally put these online for people to use.
And here we are.
I have vetted each restaurant in these guides for my trip, but please note that things change all the time in restaurants, and you need to reach out to the places youre interested in ahead of time to confirm that they can serve you.
Explore The Local Grocery Stores
Make the grocery store your first stop in a new, unfamiliar place. Its a great way to feel at home and grab a few safe gluten free staples like fresh fruits and vegetables or cheese.
While the language might be different, what you find in a grocery store in Colombia or Hungary is not particularly different than what you find at home. Its also a great way to discover some new gluten free treats we discovered these wafer cookies in Colombia and ended up buying three or four packs to bring back with us because they were so delicious.

Where To Stay In Barcelona The 6 Best Areas Neighbourhoods & Places
Would you like to be near the beach in a former fishermans neighbourhood? Then you may want to stay in Barceloneta, the old fishing and seaside village in Barcelona where you can still today feel a bit of the old maritime atmosphere. At the same time the seaside area has as part of the 1992 Olympic Games preparations been converted into a splendid and lively city beach. So if your dream is to combine a city break in Barcelona with a beach holiday maybe if you travel as a family, your best option may well be to stay in one of the hotel places around Barceloneta.
The triangular district of rectilinear streets squeezed in between the Rambla de Mar and the Port Olímpic, saw the day of light when Barcelona had to redesign the old neighbourhoods for the Olympic Games of 1992. The old traditional fishermans district was therefore turned into a modern beach area with bars and seafood restaurants to meet the demand for the Olympics. Unfortunately, the fishermens houses and public baths disappeared with this new beach district approach.
La Barceloneta is the perfect place to try some fresh fish, paella or the seafood dish fideuà in Barcelona!
Mid-rangeHotel 54 Barceloneta is a design hotel located in Barcelonas beachfront area of Barceloneta and features a stylish terrace overlooking the port. It offers a 24-hour reception, free Wi-Fi and air-conditioned rooms with a smart TV.
New Zealands South Island
New Zealand was amazing, both as a travel destination for outdoor lovers, and as a gluten free travel destination. Ive never been to a place with such a diversity of landscapes in such a relatively small area.
Rocky peaks? Youve got Mt. Cook and Mt. Aspiring.
Stunning blue lakes? Lake Tekapo and Pukaki have you covered.
And sunrise kayaking on Milford Sound is basically a must-do when youre in New Zealand.
I havent even gotten to lush green wine country, the tropical mountains meet the beach vibes of Abel Tasman, the California-esque East Coast near Kaikoura, and the rugged and scenic West Coast.
Seriously, New Zealand is amazing.
In terms of eating gluten free in New Zealand, there are definitely ups and downs. On the ups, Queenstown and Wanaka were amazing. On the downs, it was tough to find Celiac-safe gluten free food outside of those two cities.
Obviously, New Zealand, even just the south island, is a big place. Here are some of our favorite gluten free stops.
5 Incredible Places to to Eat
The best places to find gluten free food on the South Island are Wanaka and Queenstown, but youll find gluten free groceries at just about every grocery store in the country. We liked New World the most.

The W Barcelona is an icon and the place to stay for luxury in Barcelona. Located on the beach in Barceloneta, across the street from the Desigual headquarters, the W Hotel invites sunbathers with its glass sail-like facade, reflecting the city and the beach below.

Making A List Of Potential Restaurants
There are three places I look.
First, I start with Find Me Gluten Free, a great app that has crowd-sourced reviews from the gluten free community.
There is one big thing you need to watch out for the reviews arent always 100% reliable, which is why you need to reach out to each restaurant individually.
Here are a few tips for using FMGF:
Second, Ill head over to TripAdvisor, Yelp, or the local equivalent, and search Celiac. Not gluten free, you have to search Celiac. Their definition of gluten free options is underwhelming at best, and wrong at worst. I usually find a few more restaurants on those platforms that I feel good about adding to the list.

Best Hostel For Digital Nomads In Barcelona Sleep Green
- Laundry Facilities
The digital nomad lifestyle can be a real dream. But only if you find the right accommodation. Luckily, there are quite a few laptop friendly hostels in Barcelona but this one truly stood out to us.
It might not be the cheapest place in the city, but it definitely comes with a lot of bang for your buck. The Apple Computers in the common areas are just one of them. Of course, the free Wifi is as fast as it could possibly be, so you can get work done within the blink of an eye!
Its located in the lively neighborhood of Las Rambas, so once youve put your laptop away, you can head out and enjoy the rest of the day. But dont worry, the hostel itself is very peaceful and quiet despite the great location near La Rambla.
Why youll love this hostel:
- Free Apple Computers
- Daily cleaning service
There will be no way around noticing how eco-friendly this hostel is. At the broke backpacker, we travel consciously of nature and everyone around us, and the hostels standards make our hearts sing. Not only has it earned an EU Label for being super eco-friendly, Sleep Green is also committed to sustainable tourism.
If youre a party lover, this place wont be the right one for you as its one of the more chilled Barcelona hostels. Youll find a grown up and respectful crowd that prefer a quiet stay so they can work on their laptops in peace. However, as we mentioned before, the hostel is located in a lively area so you get the best of both worlds.
