Best Location To Stay In Capri

Where Should You Book A Hotel On Capri In Positano Or In Amalfi

The best places to visit in Capri | Condé Nast Traveller

Should you base yourself on a stunning island or one of the most charming villages along the Amalfi Coast? These are the first questions you’ll have to grapple with when planning your trip to southern Italy, and the right answer differs depending upon your travel style, budget, and group.

We always recommend dividing your time between the island and the mainland, spending at least three days on Capri and three days on the Amalfi Coast so you can fully savor both these breathtaking and unique destinations in the southern region of Campania. That said, we realize that not everyone has six or seven days to dedicate to the island of Capri and the Amalfi Coast. Here’s a quick overview of the differences between Capri, Positano, and Amalfi to help you narrow your choices if you’re pressed for time!

Marina Grande Best Place To Stay In Capri For Families

Welcome to the largest port area on the island!

If youre looking for a nice place where to stay in Capri with the kids, youve come to the right place! Marina Grande is the landing point for most tourists who arrive on the island, but this area doesnt end there.

Its filled with fantastic restaurants like Bagno di Tiberi Beach Club, private villas, and the main attraction, the largest beach in Capri, which has the same name and is equipped with plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas.

Theres also Spiaggia Bagni di Tiberio beach, which is super popular with families as the waters are relatively shallow, but youll need to take a boat to get there for this one.

Marina Grande is great for families as it has a few beaches that Im sure the little ones will love, plus its super well-connected in case you want to visit other places without much effort.

The area around the port may get a bit crowded at times as the tourists arrive by ferry on the island, but other than that, you should be fine in the different parts of Marina Grande, like the beaches.

  • Enjoy a fun day with the family at the beach
  • Grab lunch at Bagno di Tiberi Beach Club
  • Visit the San Costanzo Di Capri Stadium

How Many Days In Capri

MUST READ: Where to Stay in Capri (Top Choices of 2020)

The first thing to decide when planning a trip to Capri is how many days to stay.

I believe you need at least 2 days in Capri, so one night on the island. The best amount of time to spend in Capri to see the highlights without rushing is 3 days.

4 days or more of course ideal if you want to rest and relax.

More in detail:

If you only have one day in Capri, including transport from and to the mainland, you will be able to see some of the Capri highlights such as the blue grotto, see the center of Capri town or visit Anacapri.

This will be rather rushed and it likely to only allow you to see the busiest parts of Capri and leave you with a less than satisfactory experience

If you have one full day in Capri , I recommend you follow this one day in Capri itinerary, that will allow you to see as much as possible in a limited time.

If you have two full days in Capri, you can see Capri, Anacapri and take a tour of the island.

If you have 3 days in Capri, you can see Capri town, Anacapri, Tiberius Villa, take a boat tour of the island and get some time to relax on the beach.

If tou have even more time, you can explore all of the above, experience Capri beaches/ sea access spots and also have time for shopping and relaxation on Capris many wonderful terraces.

A Locals Guide On Where To Stay In Capri

There is no better person to get insider tips on where to stay in Capri than from someone who lives there. I asked Holly of Michelangelo and Giardino di Capri to share with us the best hotels in Capri, along with a few B& Bs and apartment rentals. Before we dive into all the options from budget stays to luxury villas fit for an emperor, let me introduce you to Holly and Gianluca.

Holly and Gianlucas former restaurant, Ristorante Michelangelo, instantly became my favorite place to eat in Capri after my husband and I had the most memorable meal there. On weekend trips from Naples, Ristorante Michelangelo was our go to spot for quality pasta dishes and a chocolate torta that I still cant believe is gluten free. Get the recipe in their virtual cookbook.

After meeting Holly at lunch, I followed her on . I got to know more about the Australian and how she ended up married to a Caprese local. Frankly, Im not sure why their story isnt a film yet. Youll want to keep reading to discover how they met.

Holly and Gianluca have since closed the restaurant and are embarking on a new journey in Anacapri, Giardino di Capri. Their new family business focuses on making tourism more sustainable and the importance of bringing agriculture back to the island community, along with celebrating the islands history, culture and natural beauty.

Capri Town Where To Stay In Capri For Nightlife

The eponymous Capri Town is the largest town on the island. Covering most of the eastern side of Capri, there is plenty to see and do to keep you occupied, no matter the length of your stay.

As the main town on the island, Capri can get pretty busy. Its much more laid-back in the evenings though, once all of the day-trippers have headed back to the mainland. Then you can really enjoy the romantic atmosphere, wandering the winding streets in peace and quiet.

Capri is a particularly popular destination for wealthy travelers and celebrities. As such, it comes as little surprise that the shopping and hospitality available reflect their affluent clientele.

The streets here are lined with high-end boutiques and luxury designer stores. Perfect for any shopaholic.

It is also the best place to find a party. There are tons of fashionable bars and restaurants to try out, with varying degrees of exclusivity. You may even spot a celebrity or two.

This is also pretty much the only place on the island to find nightclubs. If you prefer your nightlife a little livelier, and to go on a little later, then you should definitely head to Capri Town.

The center point of Capri Town is the Piazzetta di Capri, also known as Piazza Umberto I. The pretty little public square is ringed by cafes, with tables spilling onto the plaza. Its the perfect place to grab lunch or relax with a drink and soak in the lively atmosphere.

Capri Or Positano The Best Beaches

Capri only has two beaches in Marina Grande and Marina Piccola. Both are small and covered in rocks and pebbles, but have private beach clubs where you can rent loungers and umbrellas.

The beach in Positano is relatively large for the Amalfi Coast and is located right in the center of town. A short walk down a footpath takes you to the Fornillo and there are small boat shuttles to the nearby Arienzo and Laurito beaches. There are a number of tiny beaches and coves set along the coastline that can be accessed only via boat. The beaches in both Positano and Capri have crystalline water and are perfect for swimming and snorkeling but are not very family-friendly,

Amalfi’s Spiaggia Grande is one of the most popular on the Amalfi Coast and the nearby Atrani beach is a great family-friendly choice. Boats regularly depart from the Amalfi harbor to other coves and beaches along the coastline, or you can take on the hike to the beautiful Duoglio beach.

Beach club prices in Capri and Positano can be expensive, averaging about EUR 20 for entrance and a lounger for the day and up to EUR 30 for more exclusive clubs. There are small free public beaches in both locations. Prices for Amalfi beach clubs are slightly less expensive and there are also stretches of free public beach near the town center.

Where To Eat In Capri

Capri is filled with beautiful restaurants and eateries offering outstanding Italian food, so you will be spoiled for choice.

A few recommendations are:

Ristorante Il Geranio

Situated next to the Augusts Gardens you will be able to enjoy a beautiful meal with views over the Faraglioni Rocks. The food is amazing although a little pricey, although, you are in Capri so this is to be expected.

Michelangelo Restaurant

Michelangelo comes highly recommended by locals and the food is outstanding. The restaurant is family owned and you will not regret your choice to grab a meal here.

If you have a little more time and you are interested you are able to take a cooking class at Michelangelo and they are available for tastings and they cater for boat tours.

Lemon Gelato

Okay, so I know this is not a restaurant recommendation per say, but you cannot leave Capri without trying something lemon? There are lemons every where in Capri and you have to try whats local when youre travelling! What better way to sample the lemons than trying Lemon Gelato. It is also a perfect way to cool down on a hot summers afternoon, so in my humble opinion it is a win-win!!

Bar Piccolo

Many will say that you cant go to Capri without visiting Bar Piccolo. Its the place to be if you know what I mean. If you would like to get up close with the rich and famous grab and Aperol Spritzes and see who might run into.

Salumeria Da Aldo

How Much Time Do You Need In Capri

The biggest majority of tourists visit Capri for a day from Sorrento, from Naples, or from the Amalfi Coast. However, Capri is well worth a longer stay or even an entire vacation!

While its possible to see the main highlights of Capri in just a day, the island has so much to offer that it deserves more time! Even if you are mostly interested in sightseeing, we recommend planning at least 2-3 days in Capri. But if you are visiting in summer, you could easily spend a week or even two here as well.

So if you stumbled upon this article while still doubting whether to visit Capri for a day or stay on the island, I highly recommend staying in Capri, even if only for one or two nights. Staying longer will allow you to get a bit beyond the most popular tourist routes and see some amazing scenery. Furthermore, you will be able to experience the island without the biggest crowds of day-trippers.

Anacapri A Quiet Place To Stay In Capri

Anacapri is the best area to stay in Capri if you are looking for tranquility. As it is further away from the main port of the island, most visitors dont get to set foot in Anacapri, but thats not because its not worth it! It is surrounded by vegetation and from the village you can take a walk to Mount Solaro, the highest point on the island. The views are scandalous. Dont worry if youre more beach than mountain. From Anacapri you can easily reach the famous Blue Grotto and Lido di Faro, where you can swim in the sea or in a pool.

Though less noisy than Capri, it also has shops and restaurants. But you wont find the glamour of Capris luxury windows. Anacapri is full of small craft shops hidden in its charming streets. There are also frequent buses between Capri and Anacapri if you miss something.

Furthermore, Anacapri is the best option to find cheap accommodation in Capri. As it is less in demand, the fares are usually the best on the island.

Our recommendations for accommodation in Anacapri:
