How To Choose The Best New York Neighborhoods To Stay In

Vacances États

When choosing the best New York neighborhood to stay in, there are several things to consider.

As tourists, your requirements are much different than if you were a family moving to New York permanently. You need to consider the unique needs and wants of your own family.

One of the best things about New York is that there are so many accommodation options available for all different budgets.

Staying in a big city like New York, some of the important decisions to think about are:

Do you want to stay close to all the main attractions?

Some people prefer to stay close to main attractions, which is why youll find many of the popular New York hotels in Downtown Manhattan. People like staying here because its where Times Square and Broadway are located, as well as many of the larger department stores.

Do you prefer a quiet neighborhood, or is a noisy and vibrant area more appealing?

While noise isnt much of an issue if youre staying in a large hotel, if youll be in an apartment, you may want to think about the level of noise in your neighborhood. If you find it hard to sleep when its noisy, then a quieter neighborhood will be more appealing.

What are the ages of the people in your family?

If you have children, then you may prefer a family-friendly Manhattan neighborhood over a neighborhood that caters for twenty-somethings who love to party and stay out late.

Will you be taking the subway while in New York or do you prefer to walk?

How long will you be staying in New York?

The rooms are comfortable, spacious and outfitted with wifi and a refrigerator. Theres also an on-site restaurant.

Most Charming Nyc Neighborhood: The West Village

The West Village is my favorite neighborhood in New York City, hands down. Between the impeccable brownstones, the lively tree-lined streets and the charming cafes on practically every corner, this is easily one of the best NYC neighborhoods to stay in, especially for first time visitors.

The neighborhood doesnt fall into the clean grid pattern most other NYC neighborhoods do, but that only adds to the charm. Trust me, getting lost in the West Village is the best part about staying here each street is charming and demands exploration.

This NYC neighborhood attracts young folks, artists and musicians. Youll also notice a large share of happy young couples, strolling the streets hand-in-hand because the beauty of this neighborhood makes everything feel dreamy.

The neighborhood feels calm during the daytime, with lingering restaurant patrons chatting away on every corner, before coming alive in the evening. Youll find your fair share of cozy jazz clubs and live musicians as the sun starts to set.

I recommend spending an evening at Tartine and popping over to Washington Square Park every chance you get.

Hotels are hard to come by in the West Village so they wont come cheap. To that end, heres some options:

Best hotels in the West Village:

  • Affordable: The Jane
  • Mid-Range: The Marlton & Walker Hotel
  • Luxury: The Greenwich Hotel & The Mercer Hotel

Notable things to do near DUMBO in Brooklyn

Obviously the big thing is the Manhattan Bridge photo spot . Greenwich Village & Chelsea

Chelsea and Greenwich Village are two great, laid-back places to stay in New York in case you already had enough time to explore Midtown!

Some of the highlights here are the Flatiron Building, Chelsea Piers, Union Square Market and Chelsea Market as well. One downside of staying here is that youll need to use public transportation to visit the main attractions in Midtown such as Times Square. Instead, youll be closer to the interesting sights in the southern part of the city such as the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty and Wall Street , for example.

For Romantics: Chelsea & Greenwich Village

Chelsea and Greenwich Village are the right places to stay for you if youve been to New York before, have already checked out the main sights, and now want to immerse yourself deeper into New York life.

But theyre also great as an alternative if you dont want to stay in tourist areas, but would rather experience an authentic slice of New York life.

Greenwich Village is the art district and, just like Chelsea, its teeming with life. You can spend hours on Washington Square just listening to street musicians and watching passers-by without ever getting bored.

Or you can take a stroll through narrow, winding streets and admire New Yorks typical sandstone buildings, or enjoy a meal at one of the many cute little restaurants.

Greenwich Village also has some excellent comedy clubs, and you should visit at least one of them. If youre into jazz bars, then the Village is a dream come true.

If you like swanky clubs, youll find several of those in the Meatpacking District, which also belongs to this part of town.

Pros of staying in Chelsea & Greenwich Village:

  • An authentic New York experience
  • A large selection of great restaurants in every price range
  • A wide range of very stylish hotels at reasonable prices
  • The major sights in the south are only a short subway ride away

Cons of staying in Chelsea & Greenwich Village:

  • The sights in Midtown arent within walking distance
  • It can get a bit loud here in the evening and at night

Why Is Soho Of The Best Places To Stay In Nyc

SoHo is about style and appearance but in a more gritty way than the Champ-Elyses in Paris. Is it pretentious? Maybe a little, but SoHo is better for its swagger.

SoHo has the most local and residential feel in Manhattan among this list of where to stay in New York City.

However, if youre looking for a more authentic NYC stay, you should look at hotels closer to Chelsea and Greenwich Village.

Hotels range from the top end of budget to luxurious but it is a little isolated in the Manhattan landscape. Long walks either direction are required to get to the next touristy area.

Top 10 Best Places To Visit In Manhattan, New York In 2021 – Manhattan Travel Guide

Dont have time to read the whole post full of me waxing poetic about all the things I love about New York City? I totally get it.

Heres a condensed version for you.

The 5 Best Areas to Stay in New York City for all Styles and Budgets

While all of the areas below are fantastic places to stay for your trip to New York, my absolute favorite place to stay in NYC is the area between Nomad and the Flatiron.

I spent the bulk of my time in New York City in this part of town, and it was a perfect home base for exploring all corners of the city.

I stayed first at the Freehand, which is a budget-friendly option a few blocks from the Flatiron building with relatively small rooms, but a great location and fantastic amenities.

I also stayed at the Ace Hotel, a classic boutique hotel option, which had roomier rooms and an amazing lobby , but was a little bit more expensive. I wanted to stay at the Made Hotel, but it was sold out for the time I was there.

If its your first time in NYC, you should look atMidtown Manhattan.

Its central, close to both Central Park, Chelsea, and Times Square, and its well-connected to the rest of the city via the Subway.

If youre on a budget, look at Pod 51, a budget hotel with 358 basic rooms and a super accessible price point.

Id also look at the CitizenM Times Square, one of the most highly rated hotels in the area.

If youre looking for a younger, hipper crowd, look at Chelsea and Greenwich Village.

Brooklyn Where To Stay In New York City For Return Visitors

Brooklyn is renowned for its diverse residential neighborhoods. The most populated borough of New York City is huge and covers over 3 times the land area of Manhattan Island.

The Dumbo area close to Brooklyn Bridge is extremely touristy but not in a gimmicky way like Times Square. However, the area we recommend you consider staying in Brooklyn is Williamsburg.

If youre looking for hipster, bars spilling out onto streets, artsy, chilled and quite frankly awesome, Williamsburg is the place you should book. You can always get a subway into Manhattan.

The reason we say Brooklyn / Williamsburg is where to stay in New York City for return visitors is because most first timers will stay in Manhattan, explore Brooklyn and Williamsburg, then say Ahh, next time we will stay here.
