Best Place To Stay In Alta Utah

Where Is The Best Place To Stay For Alta/snowbird

3 Tips for Quick Access to Ski Resorts Near Salt Lake City – Visit Utah

We are setting up a guys weekend for the last weekend of January and are interested in spending one day at Alta and one at Snowbird. We realize Park City will probably be expensive and crowded due to the film festival so we were thinking to avoid staying in Park City, plus we have all been to Park City and the Canyons before.

Any recommendations for a place closer to Alta/Snowbird that is close to the mountain but also could be close to some restaurants/bars.

Your help is grealy appreciated!

This is good because you are right there at the ski areas, not having to drive up and down the canyon. It could be seen as not as good because there is very little to do up the canyon other than the resorts. So it is best if you want a quiet, ski vacation without too much distraction.

Or you could stay at the mouth of the canyon though most of that is home/condo rentals and you’d need to go through an agency, try vrbo for starters.

You could take the ski bus up the canyon and not have to worry about driving or parking,,,very environmental.

Then you could stay in Sandy/Midvale area. Lots of options there, Fairfield, Comfort, Summerfield, Holiday Inn etc.. Lots of dining options, as well. Easy access to the freeway, possibility to take the ski bus depending on where you stay, less expensive.

Or you could go with the drive from downtown and have more variety of restaurants and bars.

Five Lodges Make Utahs Alta Resort A Winning Ski Destination

The ski resort of Alta, Utah, basks in well-deserved accolades for burly terrain, massive snowfalls and a stoic devotion to a throwback vibe . But skiers who hit the mountain on day trips from nearby destination resorts are missing a seductive element of the Alta experience: the five inns strung like river stones along the resorts base.

Each of them the Alta Lodge, Alta Peruvian, Altas Rustler, Goldminers Daughter and Snowpine goes back decades, is independently owned and serves up a boutique experience that is rare at the base of a world-class ski mountain. Three of the five are built into the hillside, lending the impression that they are born of the surrounding Wasatch Mountains. All have modern touches notably broad, pellucid glass panes through which to gaze upon the ski hill but also feature generous doses of exposed stone and beams, some dating to the original construction.

Alta sits near the end of Little Cottonwood Canyon, nine miles east of and 4,000 vertical feet above the outskirts of Salt Lake City. Little refers to the narrowness of the canyon, a kind of storm trap that delivers, on average, 500 inches of snow annually to Alta and its next-door neighbor, Snowbird.

Each of the inns serves top-rate food and, because off-site dining options are limited, all offer daily rates that include meals. In a nod to the oxymoronic skier on a budget, all the lodges also have dorm beds.

Best Place To Stay In Alta/snowbird

I really don’t think there is a better place to stay in Alta-Snowbird. When I go to Snowbird I stay at the Cliff Lodge . When I go to Alta I stay at the Rustler. I usually end up skiing both mountains with the combined pass.I actually don’t know if I really end up saving money at the Cliff because their meals are expensive. Also the Cliff has some downsides in comparison to the Rustler: worse food, more impersonal pool area, more impersonal staff. The Rustler, in comparison, is at Alta, which I think is a huge plus, and also has terrific food and staff. I love reading the snow report there every morning. It’s serviced by its own lift. The pool, hot tub, and gym are all fantastic. My vote goes to the Rustler.More

Alta Ski Area Highlights

Although Alta is just a 45-minute drive from Salt Lake, its pristine surroundings feel half a world away. Diehard skiers flock here for the glorious powder, challenging terrain, and loyalty to tradition. The numbers dont lie the five lodges near the base boast return rates as high as 70 to 90 percent.

Alta doesnt always make the short list for family ski vacations, but it should! It has a lot to offer kids: Beginner runs make up a quarter of the mountain and the Alf Engen ski school is excellent, with very small classes and lots of one-on-one attention. That goes for adults too not having skied in years, I needed a refresher on fundamentals and a confidence boost, and my instructor was fantastic at both.

One of the things I love about the ski school is that they group kids more by skill level than by age, so everyone in the class can truly get the most out of their lesson. Children too little or not inclined to hit the slopes can spend time in the onsite childcare center, which takes kids from 6 weeks to 9 years.

Alta has a reputation as a purists mecca, and it truly is all about the skiing theres no flash and dash, and off-the-slopes amenities are limited. If you must have big-name restaurants, chic shops and a buzzy social scene, it probably isnt for you. The other caveat or benefit, depending on your point of view is that theres no snowboarding.

When Cassie Dippos family moved from the city of New York to the slopes of Alta, Utah, in 1965, she was 9 years old. The snow was dry and white and famously light and often so deep it reached well past her waist.

There were four chairlifts. Lift tickets were $4.50. And lining the road up Little Cottonwood Canyon were five simple, family-run, ski-in/ski-out lodges, all opened between 1939 and 1962. All of which, a lifetime later, have remained essentially the same, in aesthetic and spirit and modified American meal plans.

Honestly, not much has changed here since I was a kid, said Ms. Dippo, now 63, who remains an owner of the TV-free Alta Lodge, her familys property.

Until now. Fresh off a $50 million overhaul, the Snowpine Lodge reopens this week as Altas first-ever true luxury hotel. It appears to have everything any luxury ski hotel anywhere has and a lot of things Alta, a world-class mountain with a $116 lift ticket and a whopping six chairlifts, intentionally, has never had.

Snowpines opening winter rate for a standard king is $569 for two, and $780 with breakfast and dinner Alta Lodges regular season rate is $500 for two, including meals.
