Belize – Top 10 Places To Visit in Belize !

Choose Caye Caulker when you are travelling on a budget!

Caye Caulker is slightly cheaper than Ambergris Caye. You will notice this by the prices for accommodations, but also the bill in a restaurant and activities such as diving or a flight above The Great Blue Hole. Are you on Ambergris Caye and looking for cheap food? In the evening, a number of food trucks open at the port, where prices are relatively low.

Choose Caye Caulker when you are looking for a tiny paradise.

With only 8 kilometres long Caye Caulker is really tiny. You will not find any real roads, cars or resorts here. Everything is wonderfully small and you can go everywhere on foot.

Choose Caye Caulker when you like to be among a younger audience.

Overall, the travellers who visit Caye Caulker are a bit younger.

Choose Caye Caulker when your motto is: go slow or when you should go slow more often!

Caye Caulker is very small, with not much more than a few relaxed bars, a lot of hammocks and nice music. Not much to do and therefore perfect for relaxing! This does not mean that there is nothing to do though!

Choose Caye Caulker when you want to get to know something more of the local Caribbean life.

August 9, 2021 By

Only 15 miles separate Ambergris Caye from Caye Caulker, but they are remarkably different islands, and in great ways. Caye Caulker is the smaller of the two, five miles in length compared to Ambergris Cayes 26 miles. Both islands are split in two, but only Ambergris has a bridge connecting both sides.

While both islands are top tourism destinations, each has its own character and flavor. Read on to find out which island will best suit your travel style.

San Pedro Best Area To Stay In Belize For Nightlife

At 40 kilometres long and nearly two kilometres wide, Ambergris Caye is the largest island in Belize. It is one of the countrys most popular destinations for tourists thanks to its stunning views, beautiful beaches, lively nightlife and its unbeatable snorkelling and scuba diving.

San Pedro is the most prominent town in Ambergris Caye. It is a small but bustling village that offers delicious cuisine and sightseeing experiences. It is also where youll find the best and brightest nightlife in Belize. From relaxed pubs to lively clubs, San Pedro is our pick for where to stay if youre looking for a little after dark fun!

The Ultimate Guide To Visiting Ambergris Caye

A lot goes into my decision on where to travel. There are only so many days in a year and dollars in the bank account, so when Belize popped onto my radar, I did a lot of research to see if it would be worthy of a visit.

Belize is still a relatively hidden gem. I have been hearing about more people visiting or wanting to visit, but it definitely hasnt become as popular a travel destination like Costa Rica or Mexico.

After visiting this past October, I have realized that Belize should be on everyones travel list, especially if you are a couple that enjoys tropical heaven with plenty of adventure opportunities.

If you are thinking about traveling to Belize and staying on Ambergris Caye or planning to in the near future, here are all my thoughts and tips in a guide to visiting Ambergris Caye.

What To Pack When Traveling To Belize

I learned about some key packing items not to forget after traveling to Belize. Do not forget to pack these items when visiting Ambergris Caye!

  • Bug Spray. The bugs do not mess around in Belize. Mosquitos will eat you alive, especially in the jungle. But even if you are staying on an island like Ambergris Caye near the water, dusk and nightfall still brings out the mosquitos. Do NOT forget bug spray!
  • Sunscreen. Like any tropical destination, do not forget sunscreen!
  • Light and Airy Clothes. Belize is hot and humid day and night. The less clothes you wear and the lighter weight they are, the better.
  • Swimsuits. Youre in a tropical paradise with amazing beautiful blue water. Bring all the swimsuits!
  • Water Shoes or Hiking Shoes. A lot of the mainland excursions include some hiking and wading through streams or cave floating. Having proper shoes will go a long way if you plan on doing some excursions.
  • Go Pro. If you are a snorkeler or diver, do not forget your underwater camera. Belize has the best snorkeling I have ever done. The reef is the healthiest in the world and the amount of underwater life you see is unreal!

Best Places To Stay In San Pedro

Partying is great, dont get us wrong. But having a comfortable bed and some privacy to cure your hangover is worth even more. When visiting San Pedro, and you know youll be joining the nightlife quite a bit, wed recommend looking out for budget hotel rooms or private apartments. Nothing is worse than having a loud bunk buddy when youre tying to recover from the last adventure.

However, if youre travelling alone, choosing a hostel might be a great option to meet new friends and head out together. Choose your priority and pick your accommodation accordingly. Its also a good idea to ask your host or accommodation for tips on local hotspots and guided tours.

How To Get To Ambergris Caye

There are two main ways to get to Ambergris Caye from the mainland of Belize. I chose to take the 15-minute plane ride from Belize City to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. It is a beautiful ride flying over the crystal clear blue waters and coral reefs. There are two main airlines that fly to and from the island every hour, Maya Island Air and Tropic Air.

The other option is to take the water taxi. This boat ride takes about 75 minutes.

The taxi option is more affordable than the air option, but I highly recommend taking the air route at least once for the views and the experience of flying in a 14 seater plane!

What To Do On Ambergris Caye

There are many things to do while on Ambergris Caye, including all the beach and water activities to exploring beautiful local art. Here are some of my favorite things to do on Ambergris Caye:

  • Relax on the beach or by the pool.
  • Shop in San Pedro.
  • Tour Art Galleries.
  • Visit Secret Beach.
  • Scuba the Famous Blue HoleWe snorkeled Blue Hole. It was fun but scuba diving would have been way better. On the way back from Blue Hole, we snorkeled Half Moon Caye, which was amazing! And we stopped for lunch on the island. This portion made the 4 hour round trip boat ride worth it. If you get motion or seasick, I wouldnt recommend this activity.
  • Snorkel Hol Chan, Shark Alley, and Mexico RocksI snorkeled Mexico Rocks and it was THE best snorkeling I have ever done. While snorkeling, I saw stingrays, eagle rays, starfish, pufferfish, lobsters, sharks, lionfish and so much more! If you could only choose one location to snorkel, I would highly recommend snorkeling Mexico Rocks.
  • Visit the Mayan Ruins on the Mainland Lamanai Mayan RuinsI toured the Lamanai Mayan Ruins. There are plenty to choose from but this one included an hour boat ride to the Lamanai Mayan Ruins. I saw manatees, birds, iguana and a lot of wildlife. It was so calm and peaceful. A great start to the Lamanai Mayan Ruins.

Best Area On Ambergris Caye To Stay

We will be going to Amgergris Caye in March, 2014. I have been looking at listings on vrbo and homeaway and have found places a few miles both north and south of San Pedro. We want to stay a little away from town as we prefer quiet and solitude. We enjoy snorkeling, diving and kayaking. We would like to get around using a golf cart and understand the roads north of town make this a little more difficult. However, which area has nicer beaches and more solitude? If we find a private residence on the beach in either area, what differences exist between the north and the south? Thanks for all of your feedback.

Where you stay won’t have much impact on diving, the operators will pick you up at the closest dock. However, is you stay north, it would make sense to pick an operator that’s based there.

There’s no good snorkeling from shore except far north at Tranquility Bay. A lovely property, on a nice stretch of beach, but, quite isolated. You would basically be there. The water taxi doesn’t run that far north, and, a golf cart is simply unrealistic.

The further north you go on Ambergris, the closer you get to the reef. I’m not sure at what point it becomes an issue as far as kayaking. I live a mile south of town when I’m on the island and people kayak to the reef from there on a regular basis.

Are you looking for a private house or villa or a condo type place?

We are actually looking for a private house or villa. We prefer privacy and quiet. I do have a few more questions.

Travel Tips For Belize

  • Make sure to bring bug spray! The mosquitos are vicious in the very early morning and at dusk.
  • Get a golf cart rental when staying on one of the islands. That is their main mode of transportation.
  • Bring USD. They widely accept the USD and the exchange rate is very easy. 2:1

Best Places To Stay While Visiting Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is one of the most popular destinations in all of Belize, receiving the majority of overnight tourism to the country. The popularity of Ambergris Caye is in large part due to the great atmosphere, beautiful beaches, popular restaurants, and friendly locals. When visiting Ambergris Caye, there are several different options for accommodations, and it can be hard to narrow down your options, especially if you havent visited or you havent been there in a while. The following guide will help you find the best places to stay while visiting Ambergris Caye, whether youre visiting for a winter holiday, spring break or summer vacation.

About Ambergris Caye And San Pedro Hotels

Top 7 Things to do in Ambergris Caye

One of your biggest decisions in Ambergris Caye will be choosing a place to stay. There are three basic options: in or near the town of San Pedro, in the South Beach or South End area beyond town, or on North Ambergris, beyond the river channel. Access to restaurants, bars, and other activities is easiest in and around San Pedro. Accommodations in and near town are generally simple and reasonably priced , with a few notable upscale exceptions such as the deluxe Phoenix but rooms on the main streets can be noisy from late-night revelers and traffic.

For silence and sand, head out of town for resort-style accommodations. To get more privacy, consider the South End. Though it, too, is developing rapidly, it’s still less hectic than in town, and it’s only a golf cart or taxi ride away.

If you really want to get away, choose the more remote North Ambergris, which is reached mainly by water taxis, golf carts, and sometimes by regular land cabs.

With the exception of a few budget places, nearly all the resorts on the island are on the sea. Most are small, under 30 or 40 rooms, and nearly all are four stories or less. Some are owner-managed. The newer resorts and hotels are on North Ambergris Caye, the farthest around 12 miles from the bridge.

During the off-season , lodging properties often have walk-in rates that are up to a third less than advertised rates. But you’ll usually have to ask for them, as otherwise you’ll pay the regular rate.
