Staying In Snowmass Vs Aspen In Summer
Is it better to stay in Aspen than Snowmass in the summer? We are looking for a condo for our family of 4 and it looks to be a bit more reasonable in Snowmass, but I don’t want to be too far from restaurants, activities, etc. We will have a rental car so don’t mind driving a few miles to get to the town. Any advice would be appreciated.
I’ve never stayed in Snowmass nor have I commuted there from Aspen, so I have no info there. But I’ve been to Aspen in the summer on several occasions and the actual town of Aspen is wonderful and authentic. It’s really nice staying in Aspen and being able to walk everywhere around town. Be sure to ride to the top of the gondola for unbelieveable views and also try to make it to the . The nights are cool and breeezy, you’ll love it!
Summer in Snowmass is generally quieter than Aspen and more reasonable in pricing. Snowmass is only about 5 miles from Aspen and the bus runs on a regular basis between the two. Snowmass has a few shops and places to dine, so you will have things to do in Snowmass, but Aspen will have many, many more options.
Snowmass also has several summer activities including Thursday evening free music. While it might be a little inconvenient to take a bus or drive 5 miles, if the savings is significant, I would definitely give it a try.
You are wise avoiding the lower priced condos in Aspen as they can be pretty shabby, like from the 70s or something.
Go Floating Or Paddleboarding On The Roaring Fork
If youre looking for a way to escape the summer heat or simply enjoy some relaxation on the water, look no further than our local rivers for some great paddleboarding, rafting, and floating.
While Aspen is known for world-class skiing and snowboarding in the winter, and hiking and biking in the summer, standup paddleboarding , has become the latest local outdoor summer craze.
Paddleboarding on the local rivers varies from floating the relatively easy, flat stretches of water found just outside of town at the North Star Nature Preserve , or taking on the slightly more challenging small rapids of the lower Roaring Fork near Carbondale, to challenging the adrenaline pumping rapids of the Colorado River in and around nearby Glenwood Springs.
For minimal effort, you can head to the North Star Nature Preserve and throw some tubes in the water, maybe even tie a group of tubes together, and enjoy a relaxing float.
If you are looking for more of an adrenaline rush, try out some white water rafting down the Roaring Fork or Colorado River! With guided trips going out every day throughout the summer this is a must-do, and very kid friendly!

Gelato At Paradise Bakery
Your summer time Aspen vacation is not complete without a stop for gelato at Paradise Bakery downtown.
Their gelato hits the spot every time and is one of our favorite things to do in Aspen. Made from scratch and baked fresh daily, the cookies, muffins, croissants, brownies, and more are also quite tantalizing.
Psssst: You get a small free cookie with your gelato! And on a warm day, the lemonade freeze is just as refreshing as the lemon sorbet. For a complete guide to eating in Aspen, visit eatAspen.com.

Timeless, elegant, and famous, Aspen is Colorado’s trendiest mountain town and a year-round resort destination, boasting some of the best hotels in the state. Whether you are traveling for the winter and early spring ski season or for the excellent hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, or fly fishing in summer and fall, there is always something to keep you busy in Aspen.
Unlike many Colorado ski towns where the villages were developed around a ski resort, Aspen was a city of its own first. Built in the late 1800s, Aspen was once a wild silver mining town. After the mining industry collapsed, Aspen reinvented itself as an outdoor destination with top resorts.
Today it is home to a walkable downtown filled with swanky boutiques, art galleries, hotels, and lots of excellent restaurants. It is also home to four ski resorts within a 30-minute drive of downtown. Aspen Mountain, which is located right in town, is famous for its steep slopes and après-ski scene in the resort at its base.
Nearby Snowmass has its own resorts and restaurants and is especially popular with families. Buttermilk Mountain and Aspen Highlands are the other two ski mountains, but unlike Aspen Mountain and Snowmass, they don’t have a year-round scene or hotels .
Whether you are on a family vacation, with a group of friends, or enjoying a romantic getaway, find a great place to stay with our list of the best resorts in Aspen and Snowmass.
Have An Old West Adventure At The Snowmass Rodeo Or Try Some Local Horseback Riding
This tradition of nearly half a century is a must see every summer in Snowmass Village. Located just off Brush Creek Road, you will come across the wild and woolly Snowmass Rodeo taking place every Wednesday evening running from mid-June Through Late August.
They feature a BBQ beginning at 5 PM, with the Rodeo beginning at 7 PM.
This is a great event to enjoy with your kids or friends while you take in the amazing views of Snowmass. Events here include bull riding, saddle bronc, team roping, and barrel racing. During the rodeo, there are also several events that kids can part-take in, such as Mutton Busting and the Calf Scramble, with the opportunity to win fun prizes!
To complete the evening, enjoy a fun-filled campfire sing-along, as well as a marshmallow roast, to complete an authentic western experience.
While you have those cowboy boots on, we also recommend taking advantage of some local horseback riding!

Since that first day trip to Aspen, Ive been back several times: once in early July, three nights camping Moms Mountain Getaway in September, followed by a recent summer camping trip with my daughters and their friends.
Without further ado, here are some of our favorite outdoor adventures and things to do in Aspen Colorado with kids and teens.
