Horn & Cantle at Lone Mountain Ranch

Lone Mountain Ranch is, in their words, a true experience of Yellowstone Country. They have luxe cabins and outdoor activities aplenty, but nothing tops an après-ski meal at Horn & Cantle Restaurant. With locally sourced meats and farm-to-table cuisine, this is country fine dining like youve never experienced, served in a cozy, chic ranch setting. If youd rather have a completely out-of-the-box dining experience while visiting Lone Mountain Ranch, you can instead book a sleigh ride dinner, wherein you and your party will take a horse-drawn carriage to a private cabin restaurant lit with old-fashioned oil lanterns.

The Hidden Gem That Is Big Sky

This is a sponsored post. Thank you for supporting SITC.

Our familys love of skiing began a few years back when we took Ryder and Siella on their first trip down the slopes. Jason and I were amazed at how well they had done, and now three years later, they literally blow me away when I watch them cruise down the mountain. There are so many mountains to visits, but Big Sky Montana has been at the top our list for quite sometime so when I received the invite from Momtrends to attend a trip to Montana, I jumped at the offer. It was a solo trip, sans Jason and the kids, but I figured it would be a good opportunity to work my ski skills, since Ryder and Siella are pretty much better than me on the slopes. Well, at least thats how I sold it, when they found out they werent invited. And seriously, this mama needed a solo trip, more than you know!

I was so excited on the day of the trip. Our flight connected through Minnesota, but nonstop flights are available if you fly out of Newark. The Big Sky Resort was only an hour from the airport. My condo style unit was complete with a kitchen and separate bedroom, and it was located right on the mountain called Village Center. We wasted no time getting fit for our skis, in preparation for the following day.

Best Ski Resorts In Montana 2022

Home of the northern Rocky Mountains, Montana offers excellent snow and seemingly endless terrain. It doesnt always get the same exposure that other western states do, but the friendly locals dont mind since that often means lower prices and smaller crowds. Here are our top 8 resorts!

Due to COVID-19, safety measures were put in place by the State of Montana which impacted the 20/21 ski season. These included limits on social gatherings as well as curfews and capacity limits for restaurants and bars. In Madison County which is home to Big Sky Resort, mask wearing was mandatory and physical distancing was encouraged. Such restrictions are not anticipated to continue into the 21/22 winter season.

Spice Up Ski Days With The Ultimate Winter Workout

Filling your days with only skiing while in Big Sky is almost criminal given the huge breadth of outdoor activities on offer. At the resort, snowshoe up secluded Mouse Tracks Gully or zip line over the trees. Just around the bend, join former Iditarod racing huskies for dog sledding through Moonlight Basin. At Lone Mountain Ranch, which sits on its own mountainside wilderness, pop into Nordic skis to explore 85 kilometers of groomed trails and snowshoe to a river to fly fish for trout. You can also schedule an evening sleigh ride experience at Lone Mountain between December and March, which includes craft cocktails at Horn & Cantle bar, followed by a whimsical horse-drawn sleigh ride through a forest and a seat in a candle-lit log cabin, where you enjoy a prime-rib dinner and original songs from a guitar-playing cowboy.

If you only have time for one thing, make the one-hour trip to a blissfully uncrowded Yellowstone National Park, where herds of burly bison and rainbow-hued geothermal pools pop against the pristine snow. Vehicle access is restricted in winter, but snowmobile tours are bookable through the National Park Service and guided backcountry ski tours are offered by Lone Mountain Ranch. Want to meet the local wildlife? Take a ride to the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, which just unveiled its new otter habitat.

Where To Stay: Big Sky Hotels And Ranches

The Montana Way – Part 1: Big Sky – Visit Montana

The town is fairly limited when it comes to hotels in Big Sky, but there are a few. Near the river there are some ranches, and in town there is even a Marriott now, the Wilson Hotel. We have stayed at both the Big Sky Resort and the 320 Guest Ranch. Both of these options are good for families visiting Big Sky because of the on-site amenities and close proximity to things to do.

The 320 Guest Ranch is closer to the West Yellowstone entrance to the National Park than the Big Sky Resort, but its not as inclusive when it comes to on-site activities. Lone Mountain Ranch also has cabins available and then youre right there with the horses ahhh.Search for Big Sky or Gallatin Gateway lodging here!

The 8 Best Montana Ski Resorts In Whitefish And Big Sky To Visit This Winter

As I breathe in the fresh mountain breeze dancing its way through the shimmering alpine trees, I suddenly understand the meaning of the phrase âBig Sky Country. Its hard to fathom just how expansive the sky appears in a state as wide open as Montana, a state which attracts far fewer visitors than Colorado and is equally underrated when it comes to skiing.

With 15 ski resorts sprawled out across Americas fourth-largest sized and 48th most population dense state, theres plenty of room to roam when you strap on your ski boots in Montana. The largest and most famous of the states ski areas is Big Sky Resort, a sprawling winter playground boasting some of the best skiing in America yet attracting just a fraction of the crowds of the more well-known Colorado resorts. Short ski lift lines and vast expanses of fresh powder also can be discovered at Montanas equally excellent Whitefish Mountain Resort, located near the town of Whitefish at the doorstep of Glacier National Park.

If youre planning on visiting either of these A-list Montana resorts on your next ski trip this winter, heres where youll want to stay.
