How Many Days To Stay / Cappadocia Itinerary

A minimum of two full days, no less. If you do both the Red and Green Tours, then youll see pretty much all the major sights in Cappadocia. Each tour takes a full day which is why Im suggesting a stay of no less than two.

If you plan on taking a hot air balloon ride, then you can do it on either of those days. It starts bright and early at around 5:30AM, and theyll have you back at your hotel in time for your tours.

If I were you, Id throw in an extra day just to take it easy and do some exploring on your own. Cappadocia is captivating and one of the most interesting landscapes Ive ever seen. Its fun to just walk around and soak in the atmosphere.

Maybe you can go horseback riding, cruise around on ATVs, or do some independent hiking. Its a magical place so youre bound to enjoy every minute of your stay there.

Heres a sample 2-day Cappadocia itinerary to help you plan your trip. The Red and Green Tours cover everything so there isnt much to it.

Cappadocia One Of The Most Unique Places To Stay In Turkey

While we already covered why Cappadocia is one the best city in Turkey for couples, it definitely is one of the most unique places to stay in all of Turkey too. With the moon-like landscape, and wildly bizarre rock formations called fairy chimneys, theres a lot to see and do in Cappadocia that is downright strange but completely marvelous!

Hike underneath Cappadocias rock formations and check out all 36 of the underground cities! And if you feel like taking a break from hiking, why not take a horseback ride on an Arabian house? Or why not take a pottery workshop in the historic town of Avanos known for its exquisite handmade ceramics.

Lastly, while Cappadocia has some amazing nightlight, bars, and dance clubs, a trip to Cappadocia wouldnt be complete without catching a belly dancing show!

You Can Stay In A Cave Hotel

There are a variety of accommodations in Goreme, ranging from backpacker to luxury. If possible, choose one of the cave hotels. Thats right, you can stay in a hotel where the rooms are carved out of a rock, just like the traditional homes of the area.

We enjoyed Sultan Cave Suites, which has the same owners as the better known Kelebek Hotel. Staying in a cave might not be for the claustrophobic, as the room goes deep into the rock and there arent many windows.

As a desert area, Cappadocia is subject to extreme temperatures but the rock does an excellent job as insulation. Our room didnt have air conditioning and despite the hot weather it remained comfortable. I wouldnt want to take up cave living permanently, but spending a few nights in the cave is a cool experience.

Not To Be Missed Sights In And Around Konya

Top 15 places to visit in Cappadocia, Turkey

Konyas undisputed highlight, even more so than seeing a performance of the Whirling Dervishes, in my opinion, is the Mevlâna Museum. Giving it the title of museum is a tad misleading, however. The Mevlâna is a former dervish lodge and the location of the mausoleum of Jalaluddin Muhammad Balkhi Rumi, a 13th century Sufi mystic of Persian descent more simply known as Rumi. The Mevlâna Order was founded by followers of Rumi and because his influence transcends ethnic divisions, the museum receives pilgrims and visitors from many corners of the Islamic world. Non-Muslims, appropriately dressed, of course, are allowed to enter and inside the atmosphere is a serene and quite magical one.

Because Konya is an important religious city, there are other mosques in the vicinity that are worth visiting, including Serafettin Mosque, Kapu Mosque and Selimiye Mosque, the last of which is on the same square as the Mevlâna Museum. There are also several conventional museums in Konya, of which the Tile Museum is supposed to be one of the best.

How To Get To Cappadocia Turkey

Turkey is a large country, and the area known as Cappadocia is quite a distance from major cities like Istanbul, Ankara, and Antalya. However, its popularity means it is relatively easy to get to.

Probably the fastest way to get to Cappadocia from within Turkey is to fly. There are two main airports servicing Cappadocia, which are Kayseri Erkilet Airport near Kayseri, and Nevsehir Kapadokya Airport near Gülsehir.

Kayseri is the larger of the two airports and is around an hours drive from Goreme. Nevsehir is around a 40 minute drive away. From either airport its easy to book an inexpensive shuttle transfer to the main towns. Private transfers are also available.

Most major airports in Turkey offer flights to one of these two airports, including Antalya and Istanbul. From Ankara it is also possible to fly, although the flights are not usually direct so it may be quicker to take another form of transport.

If you want to travel to Cappadocia by air from outside of Turkey, you will probably need to fly to Istanbul and then take an onward direct flight from Istanbul. Whilst Kayseri is an international airport, it only has limited connections from outside of Turkey.

If you would rather not fly, there are a number of other options. First, you can take the train. The main train station is in Kayseri, from where you can either take a bus or taxi onwards to your final destination in the area.

Cappadocia At A Glance

Top 15 places to visit in Cappadocia, Turkey

Cappadocia is an area in Central Anatolia best known for its unique moon-like landscape. Called fairy chimneys, the strange rock formations that the region is known for were formed through the millennia by intense volcanic activity and erosion.

Theyre comprised of two types of rock a harder outer basalt and a softer inner volcanic tufa rock. Sculpted by the elements over thousands of years, the tufa erodes at a faster rate, creating these alien-looking spires with dark mushroom-like caps.

For centuries, people have utilized the regions soft volcanic rock to carve houses, cave churches, and monasteries, even underground cities going hundreds of feet deep.

From what I understand, some people still live in these cave dwellings today though most of them are now used for tourism. Theyre marketed as cave hotels and are a popular choice of accommodation for tourists.

Because of the regions unique landscape, one of the most popular things you can do here is to ride a hot air balloon. Early in the morning, just before sunrise, youll often find hundreds of colorful balloons dotting the sky.

Spectacular from the ground or from the air, its an unforgettable experience and a must-do in Cappadocia.

The View At Salkim Tepesi

The next on the list of the top 15 places to visit in Cappadocia is Salkim Tepesi. A point discovered by chance, while we were heading from Goreme to Uchisar.

The place is arranged on a platform where you have an excellent view over a wide valley, sprinkled with the famous structures of the tuff rock, but also overlooking a part of the city of Goreme.

Here, you will meet many handcraft objects, but also some spaces decorated with things that instantly make you think of Cappadocia Turkey.

Trees with talismans in the shape of an eye, called Nazar, a flag of Turkey, but also camels you can ride. Which I dont recommend.

Basically, here you have plenty of possibilities to make a complete photo shoot. If you spot an interesting souvenir, dont forget to negotiate for it.

Locals are already expecting this, and for this reason, they will start with a much higher bid than the value of the object.

Enjoy An Evening Turkish Show

If youre looking for some evening entertainment for your visit to Turkey, you might want to take in an evening show. This can be a particularly good idea if you are visiting in winter and want some warm, indoors based entertainment!

There are a number of evening shows available. Normally theyll offer an evening meal which is accompanied by live entertainment which will include favourites such as whirling dervishes and belly dancers.

Weve taken in one of these shows as part of a tour we did with Turkey. It was definitely firmly aimed at tourists, but it was also a lot of fun, and a good way to experience some of the highlights of the local culture and cuisine.

Wed suggest this evening show, which includes dinner, unlimited drinks including wine and beer, hotel pick up and drop off and of course, entertainment.
