Best Place To Stay In Denver Without A Car

Morning/early Afternoon: Downtown Denver

Best Places To See Fall Colors Near Denver Colorado

1. Colorado State Capitol

Denver is the capital of Colorado, so you cant miss a quick visit! Start off your one day in Denver at the Colorado State Capitol building. Look up in awe at its beautiful golden dome and admire the super rare rose onyx construction. Its a prominent feature of the Denver skyline, AND reminiscent of the US Capitol afterall.

You can normally do free tours of the inside of the building, but it was closed to visitors when we were there. Inside, youll find a stunning combination of marble, oak, brass, murals, and stained glass windows.

Make sure to climb the steps to see One Mile Above Sea Level engraved on the 15th step . Whoops!

2. 16th Street Mall

The 16th Street Mall is a 12-block shopping and dining pedestrian street which actually reminded me a bit of Las Ramblas in Barcelona! Its on the way to our next stops, so if youre hungry, this is a great area to find some breakfast .

Theres tons of shopping as well, but I personally wouldnt spend much of your one day in Denver doing so. Check out the D& F Tower, a two-thirds replica of the Campanile of St. Marks in Venice!

Youll come back here later for Larimer Square, so just go for a short stroll and get moving!

3. Tattered Cover Bookstore LoDo

If youre a book lover, youve just gotta check out Tattered Cover. Dont let that old brick building in downtown Denver confuse you go on in!

Spend 20 minutes or so hanging out, browsing around, and finding your next favorite author!

4. Union Station

Walk Around The Denver Botanic Garden At Night

Every winter, the Denver Botanic Garden hosts its own fun event! All of the plants get entirely covered in fun lights, which you can only witness at night once the sun goes down.

Tickets usually have to be purchased for this event ahead of time because the garden is one of the citys top attractions no matter the time of year. It gets even more popular in the winter months because of this event!

As an insiders tip, dont try to visit the garden during the day in the winter. Its not that fun because you can see all of the lights wrapped around the plants, but theyre turned off, so it kind of ruins the experience.

Suggested Denver In One Day Itinerary:

This Denver in one day itinerary assumes youve arrived the night before. If your flight arrives super early and you can get downtown by 10am or so, Id say thatll work, too!

As mentioned earlier, this Denver itinerary is totally walkable. You can opt to take an Uber if youd like, especially to/from the RiNo neighborhood, as its a tad further away from the rest on this list.

And because food is such a major part of experiencing Denver, Im adding a huge section at the end so you can choose how to fill your stomach throughout the day. Just promise me one thing you wont miss out on a salted caramel peanut butter cup cone from Little Man Ice Cream. By far the best ice cream Ive ever had .

With just one day in Denver, understand you wont be able to do every single thing in the city. But I promise you can get a really great sense of the area. Im including a few additional things to do at the end if youve got a day and a half or even 2 days in Denver.

    Uptown / North Capitol Hill

Best Area For Longer Term Stays | Best Uptown Hotels:The Warwick

The smaller Uptown residential neighborhood is a quick walk away from Denvers CBD, and a good value option for those visiting on business or looking to move to Denver . Though not as lively as the surrounding neighborhoods, there is a mini-stretch of dining and nightlife along 17th Avenue that can still Uptown funk you up.

If you want to hang out on Colfax without having to actually stay on Colfax, or if you need to be downtown but want a little more character in your neighborhood, Uptown is a good area to stay in Denver for you. Dont miss Ace, where modern Asian food, stylish but affordable cocktails, and ping pong all combine in an unexpected mix that works much better than it sounds.

Pros of Staying in the Uptown Neighborhood:

    • A very residential area with lots of locals
    • Pretty centrally located

Cons of Staying in the Uptown Neighborhood :

    • Fewer hotels to choose from

    Colorado State Capitol Building

We also stopped by the nearby Colorado State Capitol Building with its gleaming bell-shaped dome. If you go look out for the thirteenth step. Its exactly 5,280 feet about sea level and inscribed One Mile Above Sea Level. Its why Denvers known as the Mile High City. Free tours of the building are offered Mon-Fri from 10am-3pm and last around 45 minutes. Worth doing for the panoramic views at the top.

Getting From The Airport To Downtown

A Day in Denver: Where to Eat, Sleep, Drink & Work Out

After we got our luggage, we walked indoors to the very end of the airport terminal. The signs were very straightforward.

Once we stepped outside, we went down a long escalator, and we were at the transit center.

We purchased our tickets and boarded a train.

This airport train line just opened in April 2016, so the trains are new and modern. After a few minutes, the entire train was full of people.

The ride to downtown took about 40 minutes with just a few stops on the way. Soon, we arrived at Union Station.

Union Station is very clean and easy to navigate, although there was some construction during our visit.

At Union Station, we boarded the Free Mall Ride bus that goes down the 16th Street Mall. We got off at Welton Street and walked one block to the Grand Hyatt Denver. So easy!

I think we got to our hotel faster on public transportation than if we would have rented a car. Renting a car would have meant hopping on a shuttle bus to the rental place, getting our car and driving in traffic.

    A Great City To Visit

A great city to visit. Had dinner at Mercury Cafe and the food was amazing! Loved the ambiance. Walked around the out door mall downtown and took a tour of Monster world, got some chocolates at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and then played arcade games at Lucky Strike. Drove up to Estes Park to stay at the Stanley and the next day went up to the Rocky Mountain National Park. So beautiful! So much to see.

Very good location for my purpose – near the conference site, museums, and public transportation including going to the airport. Safe and clean area. They also had complimentary Happy Hour with pizza, pasta, and drink at 5 p.m. It was a bonus and great! The price in Denver downtown is high so I appreciated this complimentary light meal! The room has a sleeping sofa and a kitchen with a set of dishes. I choose this place if I stay longer or with other people. Of course, it was good for a solo stay.

Dinner And Bar Hopping At Larimer Square

    Larimer Square, Denver

Head to elegant Larimer Square for shops, people watching and dinner. Theres a relaxed vibe and its the perfect part of town to chill into your weekend in Denver. Youll find hip coffee bars, urban boutiques and exclusive stores and maybe some street performers.

See if you can spot the cute little cat statues which peer at you from the top of buildings, street lights and window sills. In the evenings the street, which is strung with lights, is bathed in a soft glow against the Victorian brick buildings.
