The Best La Neighborhood To Stay In For First
First time visitors to L.A. have many options open to them. Are they interested in sightseeing, history, theater, music, beaches, or museums? Do they enjoy being in an urban or somewhere less crowded? Santa Monica has a bit of everything: beaches, a walkable downtown, shopping, parks, mountains, restaurants, an amusement park, art galleries, and an extraordinary weekly farmers market. From Santa Monica, visitors can explore the mountains or enjoy nearby Venice Beach. They can head downtown for the day and then back for sunset over the ocean.
Prepare For A Party In West Hollywood
Like the Village in New York, Soho in London and the Marais in Paris, Los Angeless gay district, West Hollywood might as well be the rainbow capital of the world. In its 1.9-square-miles, West Hollywood has seven entirely different residential neighbourhoods full of remarkable homes like The Orange Grove. Norma Triangle is the best known of this WeHo seven. Legend has it silent movie star Norma Talmadge had a film studio there. WeHos other diverse neighbourhoods include Tri-West, WeHo Heights, WeHo North, WeHo West, Center City, and Eastside. West Hollywood is the best place for nightlife in Los Angeles. If New York is the city that never sleeps, WeHo is the city that naps throughout the day to party more every night . The illustrious Chateau Marmont is on the Sunset Strip, as well as Graumans Chinese Theater and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Hotels Vs Vacation Rentals In Los Angeles: Which To Choose
One thing I do want to touch on is vacation rentals in LA.
If you didnt already know, Los Angeles is in the midst of a full-fledged housing crisis, and while I wouldnt point to vacation rentals as the primary cause, theyre certainly a contributing factor.
I have mixed feelings about staying in vacation rentals in cities.
On one hand, as a traveler who has Celiac Disease and usually needs access to a kitchen, they are a godsend that has allowed me to travel to places that just would not have been easy to visit if I had to stay in a hotel, where I MIGHT get a mini-fridge.
On the other hand, in cities where theres a housing crisis driven by a lack of supply and surging demand , vacation rentals contributes to the problem by taking long term rental units off the market, since the landlord can usually make more money by renting it out for a weekend at a time.
There are certainly pros and cons to staying in vacation rentals. To be a responsible traveler in LA, our recommendation would be to choose hotels in Los Angeles. There are tons of great hotels, so youll have no problem finding an amazing place to stay.
Now that weve gotten that out of the way, lets talk about the best places to stay in Los Angeles.

Top End Budget Kimpton Everly Hotel
Located on the Eastern end of Hollywoods walk of fame, Kimpton Everly offers a little more luxury but still costs way under US$ 300 per night with a rating of 8.8/10. Featuring fitness center, rooftop pool and views of the Hollywood sign, this is the place to unwind after a hectic day in Los Angeles.
Day : Pacific Coast Highway
Pacific Coast Highway is undoubtedly the most famous highway in America. Its a very scenic drive along the coast of California, starting from San Francisco and goes all the way down to Los Angeles before continuing to San Diego. If you were to do the entire drive it would take you up to a week, but while youre in LA its entirely possible to catch a glimpse of the famous PCH drive.
On my LA Map itinerary, The Pacific Coast Highway Driving Route is marked in Orange. Here is the same itinerary map zoomed to just the PCH portion:

Santa Monica One Of The Best Neighborhoods In Los Angeles
Warm and welcoming, Santa Monicais a coastal district of the city and the place that we like the most. It is undoubtedly one of the best areas to stay in Los Angeles where you can walk without worry, since its quite safe. The Santa Monica Pier is a very popular place among tourists.
3. Santa Monica, one of the best neighborhoods in Los Angeles
If you stay in this part of the city, stroll through Palisades Park in complete tranquility and sunbathe on the beautiful Santa Monica State Beach. At night, I recommend you visit the Third Street Promenade, an outdoor shopping center where youll find numerous restaurants.

How To Get Around Safely In Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Police Departments official advice for steering clear of Los Angeles crime includes doing all you can to blend in with the crowd, refraining from wearing or carrying anything that looks expensive , preparing before you go out by studying local maps, sticking to well-lit main streets, always locking your car, and not leaving anything pricey or touristy within viewthats what the glove compartment and trunk are for. The police department also advises sticking together in pairs or groups , keeping a close eye on children, and making sure that kids know their hotels name and address, and what to do if they get lost.
According to recent statistics, L.A.s Metro system is relatively safe. If youre driving in Los Angeles, dont tailgate, since stop-and-go traffic is the norm on L.A.s freeways and you want to do all you can to avoid a fender benderor being the target of road rage. Its not difficult to drive in L.A. as long as you have a good map app and the patience to endure Los Angeles notorious traffic.
Finally, keep in mind that Los Angeles is prone to 13 of 16 federally identified threatsespecially wildfires, flooding, mudslides, and earthquakes. Its worth reading up on these risks before you head to L.A.

This hotel is a great deal being situated in West Hollywood and close to everything. It has a minimalist-retro vibe which I appreciate. No frills, but modern, clean and consistent. The bed was large and comfortable. The bathroom was clean and functional. I didnt have any issues and the front desk staff was friendly and helpful. The Swingers diner is next door which makes it easy to get breakfast and coffee in the morning. The Farmers Market is walking distance for more eats and shopping. In general the neighborhood is accessible and has great eats close by. I stayed for over a week which made the microwave and refrigerator essential! Overall, the Beverly Laurel is a must-stay. Im glad I tried it out and Ill definitely visit again next time Im in town.

More On How We Select Hotels
Travelers have all different needs, budgets, taste preferences, and profiles so a hotel that’s the best for one person won’t necessarily be the best for another. That said, we chose this list of LA’s best affordable hotels based on these universally applicable criteria, in addition to cheap starting prices:
Price: Of course, a list of affordable hotels takes price into consideration, first and foremost. We chose hotels in LA ranging from hostel-style accommodations to standard hotel rooms. We capped the starting price point around $250.
Value: For the price, these hotels offer strong value in the form of location, spacious or well-designed rooms, impressive views, great pools, or other desirable amenities.
Location: We looked for the best affordable hotels in LA all around town. Many that fit our criteria landed in the Hollywood and downtown areas, though there are also choices on the West Side or near Beverly Hills.
Guests: We chose the best hotels in LA for families, couples, solo travelers, business travelers, groups of friends, and more so there’s a cheap hotel for every type of traveler.
Reviews: We consulted guest reviews and ratings on sites like Trip Advisor, Hotels.com, Booking.com, and others to provide hotels where the majority of past guest experiences were overwhelmingly positive.
Experience: We also visited and personally recommend the hotels on this list, based on first-hand experiences wherever possible.

Were Going Downtown Los Angeles
What is it?
When youve had enough of Hollywood and need a bit of history, art or culture head downtown to one of many excellent Los Angeles museums, music venues or eateries.
Downtown LA is diverse, exciting and overflowing with cool hangouts. You can visit Little Tokyo, Chinatown or the Fashion District and eat every type of street food at Grand Central Market.
Have you really been to LA if you havent been downtown?!
The Broad is a highly rated modern art museum and next door is Walt Disney concert hall with its mind-bending stainless steel deconstructivism architectural style.
A few minutes walk away is OUE Skyspace, a 1,000 ft tall 360 degree observation platform featuring transparent slide on the outside of the building!
How to visit?
Driving isnt recommended to get into downtown LA. Instead take a metro to either 7th Street / Metro center, civic center / grand park or union station depending on what you want to do in DTLA.
Plenty of bus routes will run into downtown but the metro will be much quicker without traffic!
If youre staying in Hollywood group Santa Monica, Venice and downtown into one day of your LA itinerary. That way you can bunch together the remaining best things to do in Los Angeles North of downtown.
Where To Stay In Los Angeles: Best Areas & Hotels
The second most populous city in the United States, after New York City, Los Angeles is the unofficial capital city of the West Coast. Claimed by the Spanish in 1542 but not settled until the late 18th century, Los Angeles passed into American hands just over 170 years ago and grew exponentially from then onwards.
Particularly after the beginning of the 20th century, the start of the US film industry in Hollywood, the fame and fortunes of Los Angeles increased even more. Even the Hollywood Sign in the hills north of Hollywood is famous. And thats just one part of Los Angeles.
Elsewhere, aside from the affluent homes, celebrities hand and footprints, and famous faces lurking around town, the greater Los Angeles area is a fascinating and frenetic city to explore. Head west, and youll get to the Pacific Coast itself. Famous beaches at Santa Monica and Venice make for a simultaneously lively yet laid-back place to discover.

If you prefer a little more nostalgia, try The Hollywood Roosevelt. A few of the elegant rooms and suites are named after famous former guests, like Marilyn Monroe. You’re in the heart of Hollywood here, right on the Walk of Fame and across the road from Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, and when you’re not hitting the sightseeing highlights, you can sunbathe by the pool in the palm-studded courtyard or hang out at the hotel’s vintage bowling alley.

However, forest fires have unfortunately becoming a common occurrence in California, so be prepared if youre visiting when its forest fire season. Pay attention to the news!
