Mammoth Lakes Kayaking And Boating

The best alternative ski resorts to visit

With so many lakes to choose from in the Mammoth area, we highly recommend renting a kayak or even a boat for an afternoon on the lake. Most of the major lakes in the area offer rentals, but be sure to check conditions before heading out. It can get windy, which makes it difficult to get back to shore on many of the larger water bodies.

Why Mammoth Mountain Is The Best Place To Ski And Snowboard In California

Why Mammoth Mountain is the Best Place to Ski and Snowboard in California

We talk a lot about Mammoth Mountain here at Mammoth Bound, but its not just because Mammoth is our home mountain.

People travel from all over the world to ride at Mammoth, and thats saying a lot since Mammoth is surrounded by several other world class mountains in California alone, not to mention nearby in Oregon, Utah, and Colorado further East. Unless youre as familiar with Mammoth Mountain as we are, you may be wondering why people still choose Mammoth when there are so many other mountains nearby.

Weve answered that question below. Check it out to see why Mammoth Mountain is the best ski resort in California, and then use Mammoth Bound to book your Mammoth lodging and rentals!

High Elevation Means Longer Seasons

Well talk about why Mammoth Mountain gets as much snow as it does, but the main reason it stays around for as long as it does is Mammoths elevation.

With a base elevation of 9,000 ft, Mammoth Mountain weather stays colder for longer than many other mountains nearby. Not only does that mean theres a better chance snow falls on Mammoth, but it also means that the snow that does fall sticks around well into spring and even into summer some years.

The combination of high snow and long seasons makes Mammoth one of the most popular ski resorts in all of the American West. In fact, Mammoth Mountains summit is the highest lift-served peak in California at 11.053 feet!

Head To June Mountain For Ski School Lessons And Family

Many people dont realize that Mammoth Mountain lift tickets are good at nearby . Only 20 minutes away, June offers manageable terrain with a low-key, family friendly atmosphere with the fraction of the crowds . Spend a few days here if your kids are learning. Great Places To Explore

Great places to explore! Hot creek where scenes of North to Alaska were filmed is near and interesting. The visitor center is quite informative. The lakes are beautifully incased by the surrounding mountains. Granted, in the summer it seems far from everywhere and somewhat dull but let the weather surprise you. It rained and thunder rolled a couple of times at the end of July. Bicycles and Adventure vehicles abound and relaxed attire is a must. The place is family oriented and friendly not as snooty as other mountain resorts. The trick is to figure out how to get there. People of northern California may want to go over Tioga pass but there is quite a lot of disinformation or pure and simple lack of understanding of the proper protocols associated with that concept. Here is a tip. Coming from the bay area, go up highway 120. At Hodgdon Meadow, youll have to stop and pay $35 for a Pass Through permit. Head to Tioga and keep and eye out for the top of Half Dome! Go up the pass, all the way to 9945 feet in altitude and then head to Lee Vining in about 11 miles. Then take a right at the bottom of the grade. You are now on 395! Good luck! You have abut 30 minutes before taking a right on 203 to Mammoth Lakes. Another option is to go to South Lake Tahoe and go over Dagget Summit at 7343 feet, via the Kingsbury Grade and then go to Gardnerville and get on 395, heading south. Pass Lee Vining and go on to Mammoth Lakes.

Wild Willys Hot Springs

Only 20 minutes south of Mammoth Lakes youll find two inviting hot springs at the end of a 0.2-mile wooden boardwalk, perfect for a morning soak before starting the day or for relaxing your muscles after a long day of hiking in the Eastern Sierra. By arriving early in the morning youll better your chances of having the hot springs to yourself or sharing with only a couple of other visitors.

Wild Willys features two main pools ranging from 95 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. The hot springs are child friendly, but we recommend only using the larger, cooler pool for particularly young ones. We had a dive watch and the smaller, heart-shaped pool registered at 104 degrees while we were in it. Also, be sure to remain quiet and respectful when visiting the hot springs as its a very relaxing and serene place. Dont forget to leave the springs in the same condition that you find them and always pack out any trash brought in with you.

Devils Postpile National Monument

Established as a National Monument in 1911, Devils Postpile was formed less than 100,000 years ago when a cooling lava flow cracked into multiple side columns. The easiest way to find this natural phenomenon is to hop on the mandatory shuttle bus operated by Eastern Sierra Transit Authority in the summer months, followed by a 0.75-mile hike to the monument.

During the summer months when Reds Meadow Road opens, the shuttle starts at Mammoth Ski Resort and makes several stops before arriving at the final destination.
