Best Places To Stay In Maui For Snorkeling

Kaanapali, Kapalua and Wailea are the best places in Maui to stay for snorkeling.

Weve snorkeled at Black Rock and Kapalua Beach and theyre ideal for less experienced and first time snorkelers, like our kids. Just enter the water where you see some lava rocks and before you know it, youll be surrounded by colorful fish. We didnt encounter turtles but thats probably because we stayed quite close to the beach. Advanced snorkelers can head to Honolua Bay up north.

We didnt get to snorkel in the Wailea area, unfortunately, so we cant share our personal experiences. From what weve heard, the Ahihi Kinau Reserve is the best snorkeling spot in South Maui. Its also a recommended snorkeling site for families with children.

Popular off-shore snorkeling sites are the Molokini Crater and Turtle Town. Theyre located close to the Wailea shore but charter boats leave from marinas closer to West Maui too. So, for these excursions it doesnt really matter that much where you choose to be staying. The best time of day to go snorkeling is in the morning, when the winds havent picked up yet. This is the Molokini Crater snorkeling tour wed go for.

Make sure to wear a rash guard and a reef-friendly sunscreen.

Watch A Sunrise Or Sunset At Haleakala National Park

Haleakala National Park is one of the most beautiful and culturally significant places you can visit in Maui with kids. Haleakala is the third largest volcano in the Hawaiian islands. Plan to spend most of the day here. Also, youll need food and plenty of water since the nearest store is at least 20 minutes away. Be sure to stop at the visitors center to learn more about Hawaiian culture and the significance of this park. For hiking, the Sliding Sands Trail is the best one for kids because you can walk up a mile or two to see old lava, then turn around when your family gets tired. Kids ages 7 to 12 will get a kick out of the Junior Ranger Program, too.

This national park is known as the house of the sun for being one of best places to view gorgeous sunrises and sunsets in the world. As if the sunrise and sunset werent enough, Haleakala is the perfect place to stargaze. Since this park is open 24 hours a day, you can set up a tent and spend the night enjoying the pretty scenery and fresh air. Be sure to dress in layers since the temperature can be 30 degrees cooler at the summit than at sea level.

Toddler Friendly Rental Condos

BEST BEACHES IN MAUI // toddler edition

We are looking to book in January for 8 nights in Maui. We are hoping to stay on the west end. Looking for some place suitable for our family which includes an active 18 month old. Im looking for a place that has toddler friend ky pools and easy access to the beach. I’ve narrowed down a few rentals I’m looking at but not sure which… What would you recommend? Napili shores, Lahaina shores, Aina Nalu, or this property

I liked Honua Kai but it’s not within our budget of maximum $200-250/night. Are there some other condos you would recommend that is similar to Honua Kai?

Thanks you so much for your assistance. I have heard that this is the place to ask for help!

Thanks in advance!

Why do you recommend south ChiSue?

I like the Ridge Villa too. I think you would be very happy there.

Unless you are strongly attached to a west side stay, it would be worth your time to check out south Maui. Why? Gorgeous beaches, condos in your price point, easily accessible to all other areas on Maui and wonderful casual, family friendly places to eat.

I reread the thread and was not able to figure out if this is your first visit. If so, you have not fallen in love with a particular area……like many of us regulars that visit Maui often. I would not limit my search to west Maui only, but that is just my humble opinion. Deb

Have you decided on any of your options you picked out, or do you have more you have found?

Devour A Dole Whip Or Sample Shave Ice

I dont know about you, but I treat the kids on vacation with more than their fair share of local goodies. Maui has plenty to try.

Disney fans are probably familiar with the world-renowned frozen pineapple treat that is the Dole Whip. Dole Whips can be found in a number of locations in Maui. I spotted them at Hilo Hattie in Lahaina, and have heard that Lapperts Ice Cream carries them as well.

Why just stop at a Dole Whip when there are other frozen treats to be tasted? Shave ice is a favorite Hawaiian snack for all ages, so plan an outing to try the treat as well. Where should you go to get the best? Ululanis is the gold standard of shave ice on Maui. You can find a somewhat secret location within the Hyatt Regency Maui near the pool where lines are usually short. Or opt for the main locations in Lahaina or Kihei.

Best Things To Do In Maui With Kids

Posted on Published: May 30, 2021

For many travelers, a Hawaii vacation conjures up the image of lots of time sitting on the beach in a lounge chair with a tropical drink in hand. Those of us who are family travelers, however, know that even tropical trips are rarely quite so relaxing. Keeping the kids occupied and engaged is important too. Luckily, a Hawaiian vacation in Maui with kids can be full of lots of activities to keep families busy and entertained.

I recently returned from a trip to Maui to the Kaanapali Beach area and discovered a wide variety kid-friendly things to do there and around the entire island. Whether your family wants to taste local food, experience Hawaiian culture, or dive into a few outdoor adventures, you can find something that fits both the interests of the kids and the adults in your family in Maui.

Here are 11 of the best activities and things to do in Maui with kids.

Golf Maui’s Epic Courses

If you have a golf enthusiast in your group, getting to tee off on one of Maui’s legendary golf courses is a great thing to do. Our family loves the Ka’anapali golf courses.

The views overlooking the ocean from the Ka’anapali hillside simply can’t be beaten. It is one of our favorite things to do in Maui with our preteen.

While a younger child could potentially do these golf courses, I would recommend it more for older kids and teens.

More Maui Travel Tips For Families

Best Places to Stay in Hawaii with Kids in 2021

Just a few more tips as you begin to plan your Maui family vacation:

  • Car Rental: You really want a car to be able to explore Maui at your own pace. As soon as you have your flights, make sure you reserve a car as prices go up as it closer to your arrival date.
  • Plan to stop for groceries and snacks upon arrival! Pop into Wal-Mart, Target, Safeway or Costco before you head to your hotel. These stores are all near the airport, and are a great place to stock up on water and snacks before heading to your resort. Youll save a ton of money by shopping here, rather than the resort communities. Your hotel will most likely have a fridge, so its nice not paying out the nose for water and food all day, every day. These shops also have some of the best souvenirs, often the same ones you see in the resort gift shops, for much lower prices.

Dont over-schedule!

Despite all the amazing things to do in Maui with kids, my best advice is: dont over-schedule! Its great to just enjoy an island day and see where your day takes you. Make sure you leave some slack in your schedule to just enjoy your vacation.
