My friend and I actually scored our hotel for $99/night when we went in February. It was offseason, of course, and I think we were going on a Sunday into a Monday. We were smack dab in Hells Kitchen and within walking distance of everything we wanted to do. Plus breakfast was even included! Thats a win-win in my book.
Where To Stay In Nyc: Midtown
Luxury Hotels | Central Park Access | Empire State Building
When people think of Manhattan, theyre thinking of Midtown. From the Empire State Building to Times Square, this is where youll find the most iconic sights that the city has to offer. For this reason, however, it can get pretty crowded but for a lot of people, thats part of an authentic New York City experience.
Especially on holidays like New Years and Christmas, this place is absolutely stuffed with people coming from far and wide to see the huge tree outside 30 Rockefeller Plaza, or to see the ball drop in Times Square. If youre looking to avoid the crowds, however, Midtown Manhattan would not be our first choice

Where To Stay In New York City: 5 Best Places To Stay In Nyc
Weve now spent a few weeks in New York City, split between a couple of different trips, and the first thing were always struck by when we arrive in Manhattan is the buzzing energy that fills the streets of NYC at all hours. 6:00 am? Tons of people out and about. 2:00 am? Same thing. It boggles my mind, but I guess thats what happens when you pack millions of people into a place the size of Manhattan.
The second thing that strikes me every time is the size of the buildings and the density. It truly is a concrete jungle. I grew up in Seattle and lived in San Francisco where there is a downtown area with massive buildings, but once you get out of that relatively small area the tallest building is roughly three stories and you find green spaces around every corner.
In New York City, I regularly looked up and saw a 40 story building, no matter where I was from Lower Manhattan to the Upper Eastside. The density is mind boggling.
In this guide, were going to share our take on where to stay in New York City, based on our own experience and point of view, to help you find the perfect place to stay for your trip. For each one, well give you an overview of each area, then dive deep into the pros and cons, a few highlights that we love, and some handpicked places to stay.
Sound good? Lets get into our top picks for the best areas to stay in New York City for your style and budget.

Lower East Side / East Village / Nolita Where To Stay In Nyc On A Budget
These three neighboring neighborhoods cover a vast amount of the most vibrant real estate in Manhattan and are situated on the east river side of the island. The Lower East Side, East Village, and Nolita are filled with incredible and varied restaurants, gorgeous old tenement buildings with beautiful fire escapes. You feel what it is like to live like New Yorkers do if you stay in these areas of Manhattan.
The best thing I love about these neighborhoods is that many parts of the city are easy to get to on foot from here. Most importantly for some, the people watching can be the best in the city! There is a range of bars and nightlife for every type, from younger clubs to old, grizzled dive bars.

How To Choose The Right Hotel
The key to choosing the best hotel in the perfect area is to ask yourself three questions:
- First What are the best things to do in NYC that you just cant miss?
- Second Do you want to be in thick of the action or more relaxed on the periphery?
- Third How much money do you want to spend?
If youre not sure about the answers to any of those questions, we will cover everything you need to know in this guide.
But if you already know exactly what you want to do in NYC, pin them on a map and look at where the highest concentration of pins are located.
That will give you a good idea about which areas you will spend most of your time.
We will show you some of the top rated hotels in each area so you can get booked up in advance. Then you can start working on the fun part building your bucket list NYC itinerary.

Soho And The Lower East Side Hotels
SoHos streets and historic cast-iron buildings are charming. The Lower East Side is edgy and eclectic.
Both offer fantastic food, non-stop nightlife and trendy shopping. They also happen to be rich with history!
Both neighborhoods are within a quick subway ride to Midtown Manhattan, Times Square, and Lower Manhattan and are within walking distance to Little Italy, Chinatown, the East River, and Greenwich Village.
SoHo, which stands for South of Houston Street, connects to the Manhattan Bridge on its east side and South Greenwich Village and the Hudson River Greenway on its western side.
Note that if you are traveling with children, it can be noisy at night, so you may want to look at some other areas of the city.

Midtown South Manhattan Where To Stay In New York City To Be At The Heart Of Everything
Midtown South in Manhattan is about the closest area we could come up to encompass the strip of real estate between Madison Square Park and Bryant Park, sandwiched between 5th and 6th avenues.
This central strip of Midtown South is where you will find NoMad, Koreatown, Empire State Building and Macys department store.
Technically this area could stretch a little further South and West into Chelsea, which we loved walking around but think is more for third, fourth or fifth time visitors to NYC.
