Visit Benjamin Franklins Grave Site

Best Free & Cheap Things to Do in Philadelphia (Travel Guide)

Before ending your tour of Old Citys major historical sites, there is one more place you must-see. This is the Christ Church Burial Ground on 5th Street, which was added on the outskirts of town when the original churchyard began to fill up.

Admission is $5 for adults, but its worth it. Not only is Benjamin Franklin buried here, but so are four other signers of the Declaration of Independence. Join the other visitors in placing a penny on Ben Franklins gravestone in honor of his famous quote: A penny saved is a penny earned.

If you dont wish to enter the cemetery, you can still see Ben Franklins grave from the sidewalk right outside the fence and throw your penny on it. Just be gentle, as years of penny throwing is sadly damaging the gravestone.

University City A Good Neighborhood To Stay In Philly

11 Best Places to Visit in USA Without A Car

University City is an area where you can find good accommodation in Philadelphia, despite its being a bit isolated. It is on the other side of the Schuylkill River, which is one of my favorite walks in Philadelphia.

Two of the most distinguished universities in the US are in this area: the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University. It’s a very popular area among students but not among tourists. Of course, it’s a good place to stay in Philly for nightlife.

However, it isn’t an area I usually recommend, since there are not many hotel on offer. But if you can’t find another place to stay in Philadelphia that fits your budget, University City can be a good alternative, especially for long stays. In this case, you will need to use public transport to get to the center city if you don’t want to have to walk for more than 40 minutes.

These are the hotels in Philadelphia that I recommend in University City:

  • Premium option: The Inn at Penn, A Hilton Hotel
  • Standard option: Sheraton Philadelphia University City Hotel
  • Low-cost option: The Study Hotel at University City

Fishtown The Area With The Best Nightlife In Philly

Fishtown is Philadelphia’s most popular party area, plus it’s where the city’s new culinary, artistic, and musical trends are born. It’s also considered the hipster neighborhood of Philly and is where artists spend much of their hours, especially on the first Friday of the month, which is when Frankford Avenue galleries and studios open to the public.

Although it’s an area that is somewhat removed from the center, you won’t have a problem getting to any part of the city by public transport. Getting To The Poconos By Uber Or Lyft

Cost: About $400 round trip

The trip from Philly to the Poconos isnt exactly cheap. The rate can vary depending on where you live and where youre going, but from Center City to Mount Pocono, youre looking at about $200 each way for a standard Uber or Lyft .

That may sound a little pricey, but if youre heading to the mountains with some friends who can split the fare with you, it might not be so bad. Uber actually offers a way to split fares right in the app, while Lyft recommends using Venmo to share the cost of a ride.

And you can use rideshare to get around once youre there, too. Yes, Uber and Lyft do operate in the Poconos.
