Kilauea is on the North Shore and offers unparalleled natural scenery, which makes it a great choice when youre deciding where to stay in Kauai for your first time. In fact, the whole North Shore is filled with awe-inspiring waterfalls, towering mountain ranges, and lush tropical rainforest.

The town of Kilauea itself is charmingly rustic, filled with tropical fruit stands, and stone houses. And its rolling cliffs hide the homes of celebrities like Bette Midler and Sylvester Stallone.

Breaking Down The Princeville Vs Poipu Debate:
This really comes down to a debate of North Shore Kauai vs. South Shore Kauai. Youll find less development and lush setting on the north shore, as well as some rain. On the south shore youll find more resort options, more development, and sunnier weather year-round.
Lets break down what that means for your vacation planning, point by point, so you can pick the best spot to stay.
Princeville The Coolest Place To Stay In Kauai
If you want a more upscale experience, then Princeville is one of the best places to stay in Kauai. Its located adjacent to the Hanalei Beach area and offers a quieter, more luxurious experience close to all the action. Princeville is filled with upscale beach resorts and intricately designed community of houses and condos, so the whole area has a pleasingly elegant aesthetic.
And this area still offers easy access to all the beach attractions of Kauai too. Its located along Pali Ke Kua Beach and there are several other popular beaches in the area too. Just be careful as the beaches generally arent safe in winter and some of them dont have lifeguards.
So, if you arent a strong swimmer, its probably safer to stay on the shore. The shopping and eating in this area are awesome as well, which makes it a great choice when youre deciding where to stay in Kauai with kids.

Staying On The North Shore
Including Princeville, Hanalei, and Kilauea
The North Shore of Kauai may be one of the most scenic places on the entire planet. There are a variety of gorgeous beaches and the verdant mountains rising as a backdrop to the coastline make this entire stretch of the island seem like the real Hawaii youve envisioned before visiting. Its lush here because rainfall is higher than in other locations on the island, especially during the ‘winter’ months when the tradewinds pick up, so keep that in mind if youre opposed to more frequent rainfall during your visit.
Along the North Shore, youll find Princeville, where the majority of the North Shore luxury accommodations are located. Just beyond Princeville, youll discover the small surfing town of Hanalei, with its bustling shops and a variety of small restaurants.
The accommodations in this area are pretty luxurious and may just be some of the nicest on the island, but that luxury also comes with a higher price tag. The North Shore is also more secluded from the remainder of the island, which is something to additionally consider if you plan to do a lot of exploring on Kauai while youre visiting.
- Rain- especially during the winter months
Staying On The East Coconut Coast
Including Kapaa, Lihue, and Wailua
The East Coast of Kauai is also known as the Coconut Coast, which once youve driven the highway through the area, youll completely understand – there are hundreds if not thousands of cocos growing along this stretch of Kauai coastline. This is the most developed part of Kauai, but its also where youll find the most affordable accommodations. Its centralized location on the island also makes it ideal as a hub for visiting the remainder of the island, including attractions and sights in the West and on both the north and south shores.
The region is essentially bordered by the towns of Anahola to the north and the capital city of Lihue to the south with Kapaa and Wailua towns about halfway between.
There are a variety of more local beaches along this stretch of the island, but they lack the scenic beauty of the north shore beaches and the amenities of those along the south shoreline.

The Best Place To Stay In Poipu
My husband and I managed and lived a this beautiful resort for 12 years. And each time we come back to Kauai we look at other resorts to stay at, but always return to Kapili because nothing compares! The beauty of Kapili is that their units are spacious And well appointed. We prefer to stay in an ocean view unit rather than oceanfront. We have full view of the gardens, pool And ocean without the close proximity to the road. The Sheraton beach is a 3 minute walk away and if you have little ones, Poipu Beach Park is a 3 minute drive. This is a rare gem.

This is a community of condos with a beautiful view of the beach. It’s very near Poipu Beach which is a great family beach where we saw green turtles sunning in the sand. We stayed in unit 14 which I would highly recommend. Very well maintained. The person who checked us in was very friendly and helpful. The unit was clean, beds very comfortable, very well-equipped kitchen with nice appliances – everything we needed. There is a nice pool, patios for each unit on the side we were on, washer and dryer, beach towels, etc. We would definitely stay there again.

Lihue Where To Stay In Kauai On A Budget
Lihue is the second largest town on the island and the best neighborhood in Kauai to stay in if youre on a tighter budget. Therefore, this is the part of the island we recommend all of the Hawaii backpackers to stay at. It sees fewer tourists than other areas but still contains enough amenities like shops and restaurants to be a convenient place to stay. Lihue is a more local area. It was founded by sugar planters and remains a fairly small, simple place where the residents go about their daily lives.
Its also the county seat of Kauai and contains several government establishments. What this means is that Lihue isnt as picturesque or romantic as other towns, but it is convenient to other areas and offers cheaper accommodation.
Thats not to say that Lihue is completely boring or devoid of charm. You can pick up some amazing, bargain souvenirs in this town as well as cheap but delicious places to have a meal. And one of the islands most beautiful beaches, Kalapaki Beach, is close by as well.

How Long Should You Stay In Kauai
What is the minimum number of days you need in Kauai? While you may be visiting multiple islands in Hawaii, I recommend that you stay at least three days in Kauai if you are visiting more than one island. Visiting the tropical wilderness and remote beaches could be a good idea if you like the idea of a few days out in the wilderness.
Why Shouldnt You Stay In Waimea
- No reliable swimmable beaches. There are plenty of good beach options within a short drive of Waimea, but those there in town are not great for swimming due to the runoff from Waimea Canyon.
- Limited services/nightlife. You wont find the range of restaurants, stores, and other services you would in other areas, like Poip, Lhue, and Kapaa.
- Remote Location. Waimeas position in the far southwest region of the island means travel times to other areas will be much longer.

What Side Of Kauai Has The Best Beaches
In Poipu, especially, there are some great beaches, shops, restaurants and other amenities you can enjoy within walking distance, especially on Kauai’s South Shore. Staying at Koloa Landing Resort, you can snorkel directly outside your door and walk down to the beautiful Kiahuna Beach within a ten-minute stroll.
What Are The Different Parts Of Kauai
If you have never visited Kauai before and are only just starting your research, you may be intrigued to learn what the areas of Kauai are. Given that Kauai is a roughly circular island, the island is dissected into North, South, East, and West.
All four areas of Kauai are distinct and have well-loved activities, sights, and restaurants. However, the most common places to stay in Kauai are the North, South, and East.
There are fewer options to stay in west Kauai. However, I will still touch on this area and its accommodation options.
Of the three more popular sides of Kauai to stay in, there are options for staying in luxury hotels and lower-cost options such as rental houses and apartments.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort And Spa
The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa is the first five-star hotel we have looked at. There is a twenty-four-hour pool complex. Beautifully landscaped gardens surround the watery wonder area which boasts a lazy river, waterfalls, slides, and a volleyball net too. This resort is child-friendly but for those not looking to be surrounded by little people, there is an adult-only section .
Their king rooms sleep three people and their queen rooms sleep up to four. If your budget allows, book a 1,500 square foot suite but you may need a drink before checking the prices. Some have a pool view or ocean view. All rooms have balconies, drinks chillers, and iPod docks .
This seems to be a hotel that has thought of almost everything . They even supply you with water bottles to fill at their purified water stations. There is entertainment during the week and for the little ones, daily Koi fish and parrot feeding. There is wi-fi throughout.
The closest beach to the Grand Hyatt is Shipwreck Beach, also known as Keoniloa Beach or Keoniloa Bay. Due to strong currents here, swimming is not advised but there is a pretty manmade saltwater lagoon you can swim in instead. Or, you could walk to Brennecke Beach and Poipu Beach in less than twenty minutes.
Prices start at $4,707 for a king room to $18,821 for the deluxe ocean suite.

Why Should You Stay In Hanalei
Hanaleis scenic beauty, access to adventure, and small-town feel make it a wonderful place to stay.
South Shore Beach Highlights
Who loves Poipu Beach? Water sports enthusiasts, families with little children, beach-chair dreamers, adventure seekers and plenty of lazy monk seals. In fact Poipu , was dubbed the best beach in America by the Travel Channel partially for its curved, lush beauty but also for its rare tombolo. What the heck is a tombolo, you ask? It is a naturally occurring sandbar that in this case splits the waters here into two smaller bays. To the west is Baby Beach, so called because it is a protected cozy cove perfect for even the youngest children like a gigantic bathtub. On the other side youll find a sports-lovers haven with great snorkeling and fun waves. All this is banked by a grassy park dotted with coconut palms, and includes showers, restrooms, picnic tables, nearby restaurants and easy parking. If youre not staying at a Kauai beachfront resort, you can enjoy the best of the South Shore all day here.
Though this idyllic, golden-sand beach stretches along the Kiahuna Plantation condominiums, it is open to the public. Rough waters make this a better spot for experienced swimmers, though it is calmer inside the reef. A favorite beach for beginning surfers, you may, too, want to take a lesson here but be aware of occasional and dangerous sneaker waves that can come out of nowhere, crashing down with great power and possibly even tossing you onto the rocks. Park at Poipu Beach and walk over as parking here is scarce for non-residents.

Ziplining Over The Poipu Canopy
Feeling restless after a lazy day on the beach? With several exhilarating routes, Koloa Zipline is one of Kauai’s most popular adventure attractions. You’ll soar high above the jungle canopy and enjoy hours of thrills. Set on a lush plateau, the award-winning Poipu Bay Golf Course is one of Hawaii’s most spectacular places to tee off. Enjoy a leisurely round or take advantage of clinicsÊandÊprivate lessons offered by local pros. After a day on the green, there’s nothing more relaxing than sunset drinks on the balcony of your Poipu vacation rentals property.
Welcome To The North Shore
Beloved first and foremost for its spectacular natural beauty, the North Shore of Kauai is that jaw-dropping, how-can-this-be-real tropical paradise you see in your dreams. As you steer your rented Jeep up the one-lane Kuhio Highway from the East, there is a perceptible difference: The air starts to feel heavier, the foliage grows more lush and the greens look even more, well, green. Of course, it is perpetual rain that is creating all of this rich landscape, as it is wetter here than in any other inhabited part of the island. When you add in loads of sunshine, the North Shore weather becomes predictably unpredictable. If youre a rainbow lover you will be in your element.
An adventurers fantasy, as well, the North Shore offers majestic mountain ranges filled with trails, verdant valleys, thundering waterfalls to explore, white sand beaches, rolling waves full of surfers and some of the best snorkeling, paddle boarding and kayaking in the world. Family friendly activities offer fun for all levels and are limited only by your imagination. Spinner dolphins play in the water, sea turtles glide along the rocky under-bottom and schools of fish flash right by your face. Since the North Shore features some of the best Kauai beach resorts, too, there will be scads to do at your home base, as well.
Lifes a little slower here, so take cues from the locals. Look up from your phone, soak in whats around you, have a Mai Tai, and feel the happiness.
