Visiting Wineries In Rioja
As we mentioned before, there are more than 600 wineries in Rioja. So it can be a difficult task to choose the specific winery that will fit your wishes, specially if you are looking for a non commercial and tourist winery.
Most of wineries, require a previous appointment, so even if you know which one you want to visit is always recommended to call or write them and make a reservation in advance. Some wineries, specially on high season, require booking well in advance as they can get fully booked soon.
Manage your time. Do not plan to visit more than 3 wineries a day. 2-3 wineries a day is the perfect choice. Some of the wineries in Rioja offer wine tastings only, so you can go there just to taste. But at the most places, you need to do a whole winery tour before proceeding to taste. The good thing about the tour is that you will get a lot of information about how wine is ellaborated in Rioja. The tour duration depends on the winery, but it usually takes 1 to 2 hours or even more. So do not fill your day with too many wineries.
Plan ahead and check their visit schedules, as most wineries have specific visiting times only, specially for tours in English. Also take in mind that the wineries are spread out all across the region and you need to drive from one winery to another, so plan accordingly the time you need to get around. And also to enjoy the experience. You may not want to rush all day, you are here on vacation!

La Rioja For The Wine
Centred around the plains of the Ebro Valley, which are surrounded by dramatic, rain-cloud-catching, mountain ranges, the La Rioja wine region actually has three different microclimates.
- The northern Rioja Alavesa grow the fruitier Tempranillo grapes, best drunk young.
- The Rioja Alta is also planted with Tempranillo vines, but here they’re left to mature longer, producing the spicier flavours.
- The middle region is the Rioja Baja, best for the Garnacha grapes, which produce the heavier, darker wines most of us think of when we’re ordering Rioja.
The larger producers have big wineries and offer tours and tastings etc., but many of the smaller family owned bodegas also have welcoming cellars This is where you’ll find some of the region’s most interesting flavours and memories. You can find a lot of them in and around the hill town of Haro.
Whether your looking to explore the regions vineyards or simply relax, our selection of the best places to stay in La Rioja will have something to suit every taste.

There are over 27 rooms in century-old bodega houses which have been transformed into luxury accommodations. From the outside, the hotel evokes the past, but its suites are modern and minimalist. The swimming pool is strategically located on the terrace offering stunning views of the imposing Catedral y al Alcázar. The various themed tastings provide wine experiences that will appeal to the five senses.
San Vicente De La Sonsierra
If you are going to travel to La Rioja, you probably have a certain expectation of what the wine region of La Rioja looks like. The beauty of San Vicente de la Sonsierra exceeded all our expectations. This village is located on a hill between the vineyards. From a distance, it looks magical. Once in the village, you can visit the two main attractions, namely the castle and the church which are located on the hill. From the village, you have to walk a bit. Both buildings are free to visit.
The unique thing about the church is that this is the last place in Spain where they perform flogging. The castle is old but it is still impressive to see. Climb into one of the towers and enjoy a beautiful view.

It Is A Nice Little Town And An Excellent Base From Which

It is a nice little town and an excellent base from which to explore La Rioja. The villages of La Guardia and Santo Domingo de la Calzada are lovely to visit, and a short distance away. From La Guardia take a road up to the Bernedo pass for beautiful views of the valley.Logrono has what I consider to be the best Pintxos bars I have encountered in a trip that took in Bilbao and San Sebastian as well. Along Calle del Laurel there are many worth a visit – the one we loved was La Tavina. We also went to the Ontanon bodega, which doubles as a museum, and is definitely worth a visit.

Other Small Villages Off
If you are looking for places off-the-beaten-track with less tourism, right in the country, with rural atmosphere but still good accommodation options, there are also a few places to consider such as Samaniego, Villabuena, Elciego, Abalos, Briñas
Most of these little towns have beautiful small Old Quarters and you can find there family-run wineries. The location is also very good for touring the Rioja region and you will have a very authentic experience. Major disadvantes are the lack of public transportation you will need a car or private transfer to get there and no many bars, restaurants or other options outside your hotel. But if you are looking for a romantic getaway or peaceful holidays, you can stay at wonderful boutique hotels at some of these little towns.
Some of our recommendations.
Hotel Palacio de Tondon in Briñas
A very modern 4* hotel composed of whimsically superimposed cubes that seem to surge forcefully from the centre of the earth. The place to stay if you are an architecture fan. They have a very good restaurant and a wine bar. The village of Villabuena is very small but it has a very big concetration of wineries where you can walk from the hotel.
