Vassilias A Popular Family Friendly Resort
A little further along the east coast, six kilometres from Megali Ammos, is the pretty beach and resort of Vassilias.
With a deep green backdrop of cypress and pine that reaches the edge of the beach, some fantastic coastal views, and a picturesque beach of golden sand, it is ideally situated to cater for all visitor needs.
The beach is equipped with sunbeds and parasols, and has a large water-sports area with banana boats, rings, surfing, skiing, and boat hire. With a gentle slope into the water it is also safe for younger children.
A large spa-hotel sits at the back of the beach, with other accommodation further to the rear. Along the front are a couple of tavernas where lunchtime snacks and drinks can be bought.
With a regular bus service, you can spend your time soaking up the sun, appreciate some scenic walking, or choose to explore other areas of the island.
In the evening you can enjoy traditional Greek cuisine and sample local wines and beers in the friendly family owned tavernas.
Our Recommendation For The Best Place To Stay In Skiathos
Skiathos is perfect for holidays mixing culture and relaxation. Thats probably what we like the most about the island. You get the best of both worlds: a city with great bars and restaurants and gorgeous sandy beaches. Skiathos is a pretty small island, so you can stay at different beaches or base yourself in one, and go on day trips to the others. We are convinced that Koukounaries is the best area to stay in Skiathos. You get to choose between three gorgeous beaches, numerous restaurants and explore magnificent nature. If you want to enjoy Skiathos nightlife, you should either stay in the town or near Megali Ammos beach. Otherwise, you can take a public bus or a taxi from any other beach.
Skiathos Princess Agia Paraskevi
Located right on the beach, 7 kms outside of town, this kid-friendly resort has family rooms and suites with bathtubs, mini-bars, and verandahs. Top-end rooms feature private pools with sea/garden views, wooden patios and direct garden access, and top-end family rooms have private gardens. Kalamaki Peninsula Kanapitsa Best Area To Stay In Skiathos For Nature Lovers
Surprisingly, for a small, popular holiday island, you can still find somewhere to stay in Skiathos that is not so busy, even in the height of the season. The Kalamaki Peninsula, and Kanapitsa beach are one such area.
Part of the reason for this anomaly is the 15 minutes journey to the capital and its party bars and clubs. Another reason is the lack of public transport, and the unkempt roads, more like farm tracks, that lead to the beach area.
Most of the younger set want to be where they can get to the livelier bars and clubs as quickly and easily as possible.
Nonetheless, the peninsula is famous for its scenic views, and very popular with Greek and German visitors who enjoy walking the numerous trails. The beach areas are of soft golden sand and blue sea.
A water-sport school can be found on the beach, and there are plenty of sunbeds, parasols, and a taverna or two along the front.
Most accommodation lies around the Kanapitsa Bay area, which encompasses the beaches of Tzaneria, Sklithri, and Kanapitsa beach, and is made up of self-catering studio and one bed apartment complexes, 3 and 4 star hotels, and sumptuous private spa villas.
Best Place To Stay Skiathos

Ive seen some people say skiathos town but Im not sure that appeals to me. Hopefully someone can help 🙂

Hi Stephanie and l am a fan of jet2 so good choice as l was never messed around by them . All three are in Troulos with access to a lovely beach and by bus or taxi to Skiathos Town but very different in their style of accommodation and yes a tough choice . However , there are many more Troulos devottees who have been to Troulos many more times than me who l am sure get back to you soon to advise further like Lancasterkebabman. You will love this tiny island anyway l am sure .
I stand to be corrected, but I believe the two largest ‘resorts’ outside of town are Troulos and Koukounaries.
Hi Stephanie. If a fabulous beach is important to you, Koukounaries is the place to be. There is some beautiful surrounding woodland too, leading to other sandy beaches.

When To Go To Skiathos
Being this far north in the Aegean, the Skiáthos season is relatively short, and the sea warms up late in spring. Beach bars and seaside tavernas are only guaranteed to be up and running between early June and mid-September, and some nightclubs or beach facilities shut weeks earlier. All charter flights cease, and hotels close, around 8 October, after which the island goes to sleep until early May.
Kolios Ideal For Families And Older Visitors
Another attractive south coast beach for your stay in Skiathos, Kolios nestles at the rear of a large bay, which includes the beaches of Vromolimnos and Platanias, and somehow manages to avoid any of the breeze that blows down the coast.
Even when the waves can be seen breaking out at sea, the inshore area manages to remain flat calm, providing ideal conditions for young children and seniors who enjoy swimming.
Its evergreen backdrop, golden sand, and blue sea provide tranquil conditions for the sun worshippers, while there is a good water-sport selection for the more active.
Sunbeds and sunshades are available on the beach, and there are a couple of taverns, snack-shacks, and a mini-mart spread along the front.
With good road conditions, and a regular bus service between Skiathos town and the south beaches, Kolios is ideally situated for those who want to sample other local beaches, or explore the capital, just 8-kilometres away.
Accommodation is good, with well maintained self-catering apartments, hotels, and luxury villas available.

Troulos Where To Stay In Skiathos For Young Families
Situated on the south coast 9km from the capital, Troulos is a very well organised resort area, and particularly liked by young families. A backdrop of rolling hills covered in tall pine and olive trees, contrast with the gleaming white sand and deep blue Aegean Sea.
The name of both the beach and resort derives from the small islet just off the coast, which resembles the dome on Greek churches.
A full range of amenities are available, with bars, cafes, and eateries along the beachfront. Sunbeds and shades line the beach, and there is an excellent choice of water-sports, including boat hire to explore other nearby coves not accessible by road.
The beach shelves gently into the water, and lifeguards are on duty every day, making it very children friendly.
The area behind the resort and town is part of the Skiathos National Park, and has a number of excellent walking and biking trails which can take you to other beaches, or further inland.
The town has a good shopping area where you will find supermarkets, mini-marts, bakers, and grocers along with traditional shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants.
Many of the apartment complexes and hotels have their pools and pool-bars open to non-residents, giving you the opportunity to see how the other half spend their holidays.
If you are more turf than surf, then try the mouth-watering stuffed fig leaves filled with delicious lamb or pork, or maybe Souvlaki, a local kebab of pork and vegetables.
Best Places To Stay In Skiathos
From campgrounds, private apartments, boutique hotels to luxury 5-star resorts, there is no best place to stay in Skiathos, but rather something for everyone. To briefly break it down via a compass, you have:
- SOUTH The most popular and lively area, including Skiathos town. All the main beach resorts, including most 5 star and luxury hotels are located here on the southern stretch.
- WEST Includes famous beaches like Koukounaries and Banana, plus walks through Mandraki forest. Much Quieter than Skiathos town but still has a nice selection of places to stay, eat and drink.
- NORTH Remote beaches, rugged, rustic, complete with dirt tracks. For those after a quieter stay with no beach resorts.
- EAST Close to the airport, the Punta peninsula, Xanemos beach and a cluster of small islets
If you want to be in the hub of the action, look no further than Skiathos town. The bulk of accommodation can be found here, with many package holidays finding their temporary abode in and around this lively area. With it’s proximity to countless restaurants, tavernas, bars, nightlife, shops and cultural sights, it is an obvious choice for many of the island’s visitors. Accommodation can be found not only in the town but in the beaches close to Skiathos Town, such as Ftelia, Vassilias, Megali Ammos and Ahladies.

Which Area To Stay In Skiathos
I’m thinking of travelling to Skiathos in early Sept this year. There are 4 of us under 30 who are looking for nice beaches, food and some semi-busy nightlife – nothing on the scale of the touristy / clubby resorts but preferably some late night places and nice bars. have been to a few islands before the there’s only been a couple of places open late which isn’t really what we’re looking for this time around…
do people think we can find what we want in skiathos? and if we don’t stay in skiathos town itself is it easy to get in to the centre of things from the other main places to stay? i know people have been talking about the bus alot, does anyone know how late that runs?
And can anyone suggest a nice area to stay on skiathos that’s close to a beach but is away from the main hub? quite like to get a private villa somewhere and then go in to town in the evenings.
any help greatly appreciated!!!
The island is your oyster so to speak, if you are happy to use the bus and most people are then do some research on accommodation to find which suits your needs best. It is very easy to get to town by bus from any beach area as there is only one route which covers the entire southside coastal road.
Suggesting accommodation is the hardest thing for me as it is impossible to get it exactly right for what you want, have a root around and come back with your questions. I’m fairly sure you will get some suggestions from the good folks on this forum as everybody has their favourites.
What Not To Miss

- The lovely Monastero di Panagia Evangelistria, which has a little museum and a gift shop selling a variety of home produced liqueurs, honeys and olive oils. Plus, you’ll love the splendid views from this tranquil spot.
- Be sure to visit Il Kastro, the ruins of what was once the Byzantine capital of the island. Located on the top of the island far from the hustle and bustle, you can marvel at the breathtaking views all around once you reach the top and meander through the narrow ancient pathways which are still intact.
- The Blue House Art Gallery , sells a variety of gorgeous jewellery made from precious local metals and stones as well as an array of traditional Greek artefacts. Be warned though – if you visit once, you’ll want to go back again and again!
Skiáthos is busy in the height of summer, and prices reflect this. The island’s population is about six thousand, but leaps to nearer seventy thousand during July and August, and the best places to stay in Skiathos will be very difficult to book. So either reserve your room well ahead, or come in the shoulder season when the weather is still warm, but the crowds have gone.

Achladies And Other Beaches
All three main beaches in Skiathos are on its southern coast. While you cannot stay next to the beaches on the north, there are plenty of hotels and tourist apartments on its western coast. Achladies is the most popular beach south of Skiathos Town. It is located 2 kilometers away from the town, after Megali Ammos. Its a lovely sandy beach tucked between the hills. In the area, you can also stay next to Vassilias beach, north of Achladies. South of Achladies, there are even more nice beaches. Tzaneria and Kanapitsa are the most popular ones.
Hotels in Achladies
There are far fewer hotels in Achladies and the surrounding beaches. Esperides Beach resort occupies the central part of Achladies beach, but you cannot book it online at the moment. Instead, you can stay in smaller nearby hotels, or further away from the beach.
Maniatis Garden
Maniatis Garden is a nice villa set in a lush green garden. Though their rooms dont have sea views, the villa is right next to the beach. The next-door beach bar and taverna are part of the villa.
Villa Kim
Though Villa Kim lies on the hill, it is well worth the climb. This beautiful traditional house offers different kinds of apartments, all of them with a private balcony. The views from the property are unforgettable.
