The Best Areas To Stay In Maui

Year after year Maui remains one of the worlds best island destinations. Of course, Mauis long white sand beaches and clear skies are the main draws, but the island is also home to a waterfall-studded rainforest in the east and a parched, mountainous desert in the west. At the heart of the island is Haleakala, the worlds largest dormant volcano with panoramic sunrise and sunset views and a crater larger than Manhattan. Known as the House of the Sun, Haleakala is the point from which the demigod Maui lassoed the sun to lengthen the day. Travelers to Maui can enjoy its tropical ecosystem with big wave surfing, coral reef snorkeling, volcano hiking, waterfall swimming, and winter whale watching. The gastronomic scene here focuses on fresh, locally sourced fish and produce with a mix of Hawaiian, Polynesian, and pan-Asian flavors served up in roadside shacks, down-home diners, and haute-cuisine restaurants. Large, luxury resorts are the predominant beachfront accommodation type here, though boutique hotels, cozy B & amp Bs, affordable hotels, and youth hostels are scattered around the island to suit any budget.

What Are Some Good Local Things To Keep An Eye Out For

  • Enjoy the sunrise at Baldwin BeachMaui is mostly not known for its nightlife. In fact, most locals are in bed by 8 and up by 6 to enjoy the sunrise and the best waves. One of their favorite beaches is Baldwin Beach, a spot where the water is quite literally turquoise first thing in the morning. Even if you arent a big surfer, its a great place for boogie boarding or an early run.
  • Take your time on the road to HanaThe road to Hana is not meant to be rushed. Locals actually recommend that you take as long as possible and soak up the scenery and the delicious banana bread stands along the way. If your schedule allows it, make a day out of it.
  • Enjoy coffee at Maui Grown Coffee CompanyHawaii has some of the best coffee in the US, and Maui Grown Coffee serves the coffee beans they grow on their own coffee farm. Start your morning with a hot cup of joe and pastries before hiking the Iao Valley.
  • Go to First FridayOn every Friday of the month, there is an event called First Friday held all over the island. Local vendors set up stalls with souvenirs, gifts, and local bites while live music is played. There are also activities like lei-making classes and vintage car shows. Its one of the best ways to experience local goodies.

Eating Malasadas In Makawao

Best Places To Stay in Maui – Lahaina Shores ~ Call 808-298-2030

Think of malasadas as Portuguese doughnuts the delicacies are fried balls of yeast dough stuffed with something yummy and then coated with sugar. At the Komoda Store & Bakery in the sleepy town of Makawao, these dough balls are an honest-to-goodness delicacy. Try one filled with guava it’s the best jelly doughnut you’ll ever have. Just call first, because the store keeps odd hours.

Can You Stay On The Beach In Maui

Take your holiday to Khei, Wailea, P*ia, Kaanapali, and Wailea, and see where you would like to spend the best time of your life. Luxury seekers are going to love both Wailea and Kaanapali. It is ideal for families to stay in Kaanapali, Wailea, or Khei since those areas are well situated for multi-generational vacations.

Makawao Impressive Landscapes And Hawaiian Cowboys

The Upcountry village of Makawao was once known for its vast and expansive plantations like much of the surrounding area is and while the region is undoubtedly home to some impressive landscapes, Makawao has really managed to carve out a unique name for itself thanks to its thriving art community.

Makawao isnt exactly a home of high art or experimental art, but it is home to a diverse community of hardworking artists and craftspeople, many of whom are following in traditions passed down generations.

The Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center regularly hosts exhibits spotlighting local artists and looking at the towns history.

A big part of that history is the paniolo. These Hawaiian cowboys are legendary in the Upcountry, and its something youll see all around you when you decide to visit the town of Makawao.

But if youre on Maui in July, youd be remiss to not catch the annual Independence Day celebrations. The annual Makawao rodeo is the main event on July 4, and its been an ongoing tradition for over a half century.

The charm of the town is easy to pick up on with a glance, even if most people treat Makawao as little more than a rest stop on longer routes. Makawao Forest Reserve does offer a peaceful respite in a forest that feels atypical for the islands.

Unfortunately, its a charm that it takes a while to really appreciate, but you can definitely find some long term places to stay if youre willing to look.

South Maui Is Where To Stay For A Luxury Experience

One of the two most popular areas for where to stay in Maui, South Maui is a tourist destination and home to many luxury hotels and condos.

Made up of several towns including Maalaea, Kihei, Wailea, and Makena with small differences between the towns as well.

Maalaea is a more peaceful spot on a scenic harbor to Kiheis shopping, dining, and activity options across the street from its beaches.

Wailea and Makena are home to many luxury hotel options and resort communities with upscale shopping and golf courses along the beach.

Wailea resorts are most costly and spread further apart than those available in Kihei.

The highlight is the relaxing no rush vibes of the area with resorts right on the beach while Kihei has lower prices, resorts across the street from the beach, more traffic but also more shopping and dining in closer proximity.

If verdant plant life and natural surroundings with cool breezes are what you prefer South Maui might not be your top choice as this part of Maui is the driest visit with the most consistent sun and warm weather.

Upsides: One of the most tourist-friendly areas. A short 20-minute drive or shuttle from the airport. Lots of beaches, shops, and restaurants. Consistently sunny warm weather.

Downsides: The tourist-friendly nature of the area may make it busier. The verdant nature of Hawaii is further away.

Hana Where To Stay In Maui In The Most Scenic Part Of The Island

Hana Highway is often referred to as the Road to Hana, but its a trip thats typically more about the journey than the destination.

The winding miles that cut directly across the seaside offer some of the most stunning views in the Hawaiian Islands, but the actual town of Hana can seem a bit anticlimactic when you actually arrive.

But if youre willing to temper your expectations and throw yourself into the right frame of mind, it can be a town worth sticking around in for a while.

But if theres one big mark in Hanas favor, its the fact that the same rugged cliff sides and beautiful ocean views that typify the Hana Highway are also present in the town itself.

Vacationers looking to be treated well will find a decent array of options like the Hana-Maui Resort, but its not as popular a long term destination as the resorts that occupy the west coast of the island.

Hana isnt a resort town but instead a sleepy residential community, and that means that there are plenty of other options if youre not trying to stay in an expensive and high class establishment.

As the most noteworthy settlement on the southeast coast of Maui, it can be worth your time to explore the surrounding areas while youre there.

The town itself has some charming landmarks like the Hana Cultural Center and Museum and St. Sophias Church, and the farmers market here presents a great opportunity to taste some of the freshest fruits, vegetables, and meats available in the islands.

Youll be living the high life in this newly renovated property with a fitness center, movie room, pool, and easy beach access.

Where To Stay In Upcountry

This is rural Maui, also in the middle of the island, just south of Central Maui. While its not a typical tourist choice for a base, youll meet more locals than tourists with easy access everywhere.

Upcountry Maui is locals Maui away from the beaches. In fact, Hawaiians have been farming taro and sweet potatoes in this fertile heartland of green rolling hills and drifting fog for generations.

Youll inevitably pass through here on your way to Haleakala even if you dont stay here as you pass rural outposts and goat farms. Upcountry is more than just a place its a way of life.

Pros and cons: Stay in upcountry if youre looking for a peaceful, authentic Maui experience. Skip it if youre interested in nightlife. The weather can also be cooler here .

Here are my picks for Upcountry:

1. Coast to Coast Views in Kula

Nestled on the slopes of Haleakala, the Haleakala Princess Estate is a unique property with sweeping views of both coasts! Its possibly the best view on island. Youll be wandering 3.5 acres of native Hawaiian gardens here and lounging in special outdoor nooks and watching the sunset around the gas fire pit or hot tub. A huge tile deck wraps around the whole house.

Best for: Groups of up to six people as both a main house and cottage are included.

2. Modern Cottage in Historic Wailuku

Best for: A couple or solo traveler on a budget.
