Best Places To Stay In Scotland Winners Of The Independent Hotel Category

A small hotel in the middle of the Atlantic has beaten some of Scotlands top establishments to become one of the big winners of the countrys premier hospitality awards. The 10-bedroom Coll Hotel on the eponymous island, a three-hour ferry trip from Oban, was named joint winner in the Independent Hotel category in the Catering Scotland Awards alongside the five-star Glenapp Castle in South Ayrshire.

The runners up were Scots2Travel favourite Douneside House, Aberdeenshire and the Crinan Hotel, Argyll.

We are absolutely over the moon, said Coll Hotel owner Julie Oliphant who runs the hotel at Arinagour with her daughter Laura and husband Kevin. Its an amazing honour for a relatively tiny hotel in the middle of nowhere.

Three years ago, the Oliphant family doubled the hotels number of bedrooms and added an extension which includes a new restaurant, kitchen and bar. Almost all the seafood is caught off the island or Mull.

The Coll Hotels chef, Graham Griffiths

Glenapp Castle, where rooms can cost more than £500 a night, won the category title outright in 2019. Transformed from a Victorian ruin by the Stranraer-based McMillan family, the 21-bedroom hotel at Ballantrae overlooks Ailsa Craig, Arran and the Mull of Kintyre, and is owned by London financier Paul Szkiler and his wife Poppy.

Situated astride the River Clyde, Glasgow’s rise from an impoverished industrial city to one of the top must-visit cultural destinations in Scotland is a success story that’s often told by proud Glaswegians. Given its name – Glasgow is Gaelic for “lovely green place,” a nod-to the city’s many pleasant parks – perhaps none of us should have been surprised. Now home to numerous excellent art galleries, museums, and festivals, this port city makes a wonderful break for those seeking a cultural buzz.

In addition to including tourist attractions such as Glasgow Cathedral and Victorian-era George Square with its cafés, restaurants, and boutique shops, be sure to allow time in your Glasgow itinerary for a little entertainment. Glasgow has made a name for itself as a theater destination, with fantastic shows held frequently at historic venues, including the King’s Theatre, while the Theatre Royal and the Concert Hall, home of the Scottish Opera and Royal Scottish Orchestra, respectively, present unforgettable concert experiences.

Art fans are also well-catered to. A highlight for art-lovers is The Glasgow School of Art and Mackintosh’s Art Academy, a splendid Art Nouveau facility built in 1909, popular for its remarkably well-preserved interior .
