Spenard Where To Stay In Anchorage On A Budget
Spenard is the area near the International Airport, to the southwest of Bootleggers Cove and Downtown.
Its the easiest area to access for travelers and also sits on the main north-south highway ready to take you whichever way you choose.
Weve picked Spenard as our best place to stay if youre on a budget for these reasons but also for the free entertainment and activities in the area.
Float-planes, an unusual sight for most people, are commonplace here. Lake Hood, which lies within Spenard, is the takeoff and landing point for most of them. Barely a minute goes by without one bouncing down to deliver people or goods to the town.
Theres also the famous Tony Knowles Coastal Trail that runs around the edge of Spenard. Its found in almost every Things to do in Anchorage list as its scenic beauty and accessibility mean everyone can enjoy it. This trail can be hiked or biked, so the time the 11 miles will take varies greatly. In any case, its definitely worth doing and wont cost you a dime!
Youre closest too to Turnagain Arm, the big stretch of water sweeping down under Anchorage, where beluga and orca are known to play.

My Pick: A Goldenview Bnb
As the top-rated property in Anchorage for three years running, you cant go wrong with A Goldenview Bed & Breakfast.
While the city center is only 15 minutes away, the serene forest will make you feel like youre miles from civilization. Relax in the year-round hot tub spa or spend time on the 2,000 square foot deck to take in hillside views of Anchorage.
It was very foggy during our stay at the Bed & Breakfast, so you cant see the view in the photo above! But our stay was cozy and wonderful regardless.
Also, for hikers, the nearest trailheads are a few minutes away, so youll have plenty of opportunities to spend time out in nature.
We stayed at the Hotel Captain Cook on our first night in Anchorage and loved its location. Downtown Anchorage is incredibly walkable, and the Hotel Captain Cook was perfect for just that.
We walked around to our dinner spot and got to watch the sunset from our room!
The hotel is a bit outdated but the views are amazing and it has a fantastic location.
Talk about a stunning view!
Though we didnt stay at The Lakefront Anchorage because we simply didnt have enough time in Anchorage, I definitely plan to next time!
It is also one of the most updated hotels Ive found in Anchorage, with gorgeous interiors that match its exterior style. And with friendly staff and picturesque setting right by the airport, this hotel has it all!
Go Off The Beaten Path
Alaska may be a bucket-list destination for many. But heres a radical approach: Dont try to do it all. Travel less ambitiously and spend more time in a more remote town like Homer or Valdez, places with plenty of outdoor appeal and relative affordability.
Valdez is an indie traveler Mecca, said Colleen Stephens, the president of Stan Stephens Glacier & Wildlife Cruises in Valdez. The influx of independent travelers this year is somewhat curtailed by the border closing with Canada Valdez is a popular R.V. destination that requires driving through Canada from the lower 48 states but, she added, at least this year were able to open the doors and operate.
Cruises on ships up to 90 feet with ample open-viewing decks cost $140 for a six-hour itinerary and $170 for an eight-hour tour, both cruises visiting area glaciers and looking for sea otters, whales and puffins en route.
Among affordable lodging options in Valdez, Eagles Rest RV Park has cabins from $145 and, new this summer, glamping tents from $85.
Airbnb can be a good alternative for saving money in some communities, but some listings may be dry or without running water, in which case, Ms. Maloney said, youll be using an outhouse, which is a part of the quintessential Alaska experience.

Get To Know The Locals
Because of the summer crowds, most locals avoid downtown areas. When they do venture into the more popular areas, they are often working and a bit stressed by the overtourism or cranky because their parking space was taken. We love tourists, we really do, just sometimes having thousands of them in one place at one time is a bit much. All this makes connecting with locals genuinely more difficult. And, if I am, to be honest, connecting with locals is one of the highlights of visiting Alaska. I always say the people here are authentic versions of themselves without conforming to society. So, visiting in the winter ensures you will have genuine connections with the locals. Head to a bar like Darwins and strike up a conversation with the local characters and find out what life is really like during the long dark winters.
Gates Of The Arctic National Park And Preserve
Punctuated by wild, icy rivers and glacier-carved valleys, this remote Arctic Circle national park offers a raw, untouched wilderness area the size of Switzerland. A sanctuary for many animals, including 145 bird species, the park was named for the two dramatic mountains that frame the Koyukuk River, forming something of a gateway for visitors to enter. With no road access, services or campgrounds , its an adventure just to get here.

Alaska Itinerary Day : Girdwood
Girdwood is a ski resort town just outside of Anchorage. Its a great mid-point if you are traveling between the Kenai Peninsula and Denali. Our nicest hotel in Alaska was the Hotel Alyeska, a terrific resort. There are tons of great hiking trails. We hiked the Winner Creek Trail to the coolest hand tram. I was a little concerned about bear encounters. Just in case, take bear spray and make a lot of noise on the trail to avoid any unplanned meetings. The hike was invigorating and thankfully uneventful!

Can I See Glaciers
Yes. But after snow covers them in late fall, sometimes they become much more difficult to discern.
Several glaciers actually become easier to approach once their lakes freeze solid. Turnagain Arms Portage Glacierapproachable only by tour boat in summermorphs into a popular destination for hikers, skaters, snow-bikers, and skiers after the ice sets up. Hundreds of people converge on sunny weekends in March and April. Mendenhall Glacier near Juneau features the same dynamic.
Glaciers that spill into the sea may be even more spectacular during winter, especially on a sunny day with snow down to the shore. A few tour operations sometimes maintain limited winter schedules, but youll have to call. Lazy Otter Charters in Whittier has a Blackstone Bay tour, for instance. Some Seward operators will run charters into Kenai Fjords National Park.
Alaska’s Caribou Lodge in Talkeetna is dramatic in winter.
