Fort Derussy One Of Washington Dcs Coolest Historical Sites

  • Old Civil War fortress
  • Secluded and off the beaten track
  • Great hiking opportunities
  • Wild, rugged, and overgrown ambience

Why its awesome: Located within Rock Creek Park, the hidden-away Fort DeRussy dates back to 1861 when it was one of 60-plus fortresses built to protect Washington DC from attacks. Unlike many of the citys other old fortifications, Fort DeRussy did see some action during the Civil War. Quiet for most of the time, in 1864 Confederate troops made their only attack on Washington DC, causing the forts guns to roar into life. Today, the ruins are in a good state of repair. Nature has, however, reclaimed its territory, with the surrounding area now an overgrown woodland filled with wildlife. The setting enhances the atmosphere and the area is great for keen hikers.

What to do there: Follow the short dirt track to reach the fortress remains and read information boards to glean greater insights into the areas past. See the old dry moat, the remains of magazine storage areas, old trenches, mounds, earth walls, and the well-preserved parapet. Although the views are now obscured by woodland it is easy to see how the hilltop location was once a great vantage point. After soaking up the history, take a walk through the woods to spot an array of flora and fauna. If youre hiking, cross the creek and youll find a small tucked-away log cabin that was previously owned by a 19th-century poet.

Washington Dc Neighborhoods To Avoid

I can assure you that Washington, D.C. is one of the safest cities in the United States. I have toured the city at night and have never felt uncomfortable, even going out alone. However, certain areas are reputed to be somewhat unsafe, and although I have never had any negative experiences, it may be better to avoid them.

The areas to avoid in Washington, D.C. are Shaw, Adams Morgan , and Near Northeast, so if you see any bargain outside the areas that I have recommended, check where it is before booking it.

I also recommend guarding your belongings in places where there are many people, but this is the case in any large city in the world.

Top Hotels To Stay Near H Street Ne:

  • Homewood Suites by Hilton Washington D.C. NoMa Union Station: its a fair walk to get from here to the main H Street NE strip, but the tradeoff for the trek is that youll be staying in a high-end hotel and they serve a tasty hot breakfast.
  • Phoenix Park Hotel: standard hotel with average-sized rooms at normal rates, but this venue has perhaps the best location for exploring H Street NE. Its one block from Union Station where you can catch the free tram to get to the neighborhood.
  • Washington Court Hotel: gorgeous rooms though the prices can run a little higher than average, particularly in the busy spring and summer season. Some of the rooms have amazing views of the landmarks, particularly the Capitol building.
  • Anacostia

Anacostia, so-called because its located in the citys southeast by the Anacostia River, is perhaps less well-known than other parts of the city that get most of the tourist traffic. It has suffered in the past from a reputation as a high-crime area, but thats an unfair and inaccurate label that does a disservice to a unique neighborhood that blends greenery with history and culture . There arent many major hotels in the neighborhood, but there are some good options reasonably close.

The Best Hotels In Washington DC

We spent over 40 hours digging into Airbnb listings in Washington, DC that compare the hotels near the Metro listed on this site. Our priority was to examine reliable Airbnbs with a strong track record that are also in close proximity to the Metro that ARE AVAILABLE as a while house or whole apartment

Airbnbs in and around Washington, D.C. come at a high cost relative to the value of hotels. When we looked at common weekends tourist visit Arlington, VA Airbnbs that compare closet with hotels are more expensive. Below are the average cost of Airbnbs when you have the whole place to yourself, meaning that the host is not staying with you. These averages also dont include cleaning fees, and other fees that Airbnb charges.
