Where To Stay In Hawaii: The Big Island Has Something For Everyone

Great area for: Budget to Luxury Volcanoes, Waterfalls & Scenery Family & Adventure Travel Beaches & Tropical Coast

Many people confuse the Big Island with Oahu, simply because Oahu is home to the states capital, Honolulu. The Big Island, or Hawaii Island as its properly called, is less visited than some of its neighboring islands, but that just means youre more likely to have the beach and attractions all to yourself!

The Big Island is very diverse, meaning it has something for everyone, from the very adventurous traveler to family travellers. Volcanoes, waterfalls, beaches and coffee are all part of the Big Island experience.

The Big Island is more or less split into the west side and the east side, each of which has its own pros and cons, and its own access to some of Hawaiis best attractions. We outlined the Big Islands different sections below, which will hopefully help you decide where to stay in Hawaii.

Dont attempt this drive in foggy or poor weather!

Oahu has a lot to offer families but nowhere matches Kailuas child-friendliness.

This picturesque paradise is surrounded by beautiful mountainous views of the Koolau Range as well as oceanfront views.

Where To Stay In Hawaii: Molokai And Lanai Are The Hawaii Most Tourists Never See

Hawaii Honeymoon! Read the post to learn about THE best ...

Great area for: Locals Hawaii Off-the-Beaten-Path Lush & Sacred Scenery Adventurous

Two of the least visited of the Hawaiian islands, Molokai and Lanai are two of the most unique of the islands and definitely deserve more attention than they get. Both are easily reached by flight from most of the other islands , and by ferry from Maui. These two islands have a truly special and local vibe and deserve to be added to your itinerary.

One of the most important and interesting things about Molokai is its history as a leper colony. Properly referred to as Hansens disease it began to spread through the islands in the late 1800s. Then King Kamehameha ordered all those stricken with the disease to isolation on Molokai. More than 8,000 resided there since the colonys inception and some patients are still living. Visiting there is permitted but you can only do so through a licensed tour operator. The journey is long and is usually done on the back of a mule. This isnt ideal for everyone and children are not permitted but its a fascinating look at a dark time in Hawaiis history.

It doesnt get more old-school Hawaii than this Pink Palace of the Pacific, whose retro rosy façade is just the prelude for what awaits inside. When youre trying to decide where to stay in Oahu on a budget, Ala Moana is a good choice. This is a commercial and residential local neighborhood that, despite its proximity to Waikiki, doesnt see as many tourists. Youre more likely to find interesting local shops and souvenirs in this area than overpriced luxury items.

Staying On The Leeward Waianae Coast

Including Ko Olina & Makaha

On the drier west Leeward side of the island, you’ll discover the resort community of Ko’olina. It has the same resort feel to the area, unlike along the north and east/windward coasts, which have a more ‘local’ vibe.

Why Should You Stay in Leeward Waianae Coast Including Ko Olina & Makaha?

This area offers a remarkable array of natural wonders, including crystalline waters, cascading waterfalls, spectacular mountains, and lush tropical rainforests. Here you’ll find a selection of resorts, a golf course, a marina, and shopping and dining options in a small shopping center. There’s even a Target, Walmart, and Costco nearby in Kapolei.

The Drawbacks of Staying in the Leeward Waianae Coast Including Ko Olina & Makaha

The restaurant’s specialty areas have been very popular with visitors to the islands for a while, mainly because of their accessibility from Waianae. The area’s beauty has also attracted developers who have put up high-rises near famous beaches. Unfortunately, you may find it problematic to reach the rest of the island in these secluded areas. With the increase in popularity, traffic has been an issue, and parking is even more difficult.
