I Love Huntington Beach
I love Huntington Beach. It has a lot of fun shops on Main street and the 3rd Tuesday, they close Main Street for a pop up farmer’s market. They have a nice beach and I have found memories of cycling down the strand. What I did not like about it this trip was all the homeless, especially hanging around my hotel. Someone urinated on the tires of my brand new Subaru and it took a little while to get the stench cleaned. We did not walk the beach at night because we did not feel safe.

How To Get To Huntington Beach
DRIVING: Coming from other parts of California? Huntington Beach is roughly an hour from Los Angeles and 6 and a half hours from San Francisco. It makes a great addition on any California Coast road trip, although do note if youre planning to drive down Highway 1 instead of inland on the 101 and/or the 5, itll take significantly longer.
FLYING: If youre flying, the closest airport to Huntington Beach is Orange Countys John Wayne Airport , a 25-minute drive away. The next best option is Los Angeles , which is about a 50-minute drive. However, Id opt for John Wayne Airport over LAX if possible its a much easier option to fly through since its significantly smaller with tons less traffic .

This homey American cafe is the number one restaurant in Huntington Beach, so I can guarantee its going to be good. They have all the classics like omelets, burritos, pancakes, and French toast. And if youre lucky, youll score a table outside on the patio!
Stop 2: Rent Beach Cruisers
Another #1 thing to do in Huntington Beach? Rent a beach cruiser bicycle and cruise along the boardwalk! Youll find several places to rent a bike, with choices of either a standard cruiser or an e-bike, with the latter being super fun to cruise around on!
Once youve picked out your bike, ride down to Dog Beach and then Bolsa Chica State Beach. If you have time and its open for the season, stop at SeaLegs at the Beach for drinks. And get this its technically the only place you can legally drink on the beach! Just dont eat or drink too much because you have to be ready for the next stop!
Stop 3: Golden Road Brewing
Golden Road is Huntington Beachs newest brewery, and its conveniently located on the beautiful Huntington Harbour in Sunset Beach. Have some lunch and sip some local beer while enjoying the view. Cant get much better than that.

- Right across the street from the beach, the Shorebreak Hotel is a chic, contemporary hotel with 157 rooms and suites, the fanciest of which have private hot tubs, as well as wonderful ocean views. The bar and restaurant look like David Hockney would paint them, and there are fire pits, cocktails, a ping pong table and bike and surfboard rentals. And youre right in the heart of Huntington Beach, just off Main Street.
Parking In Huntington Beach
Thankfully, parking isnt too difficult in Huntington Beach. Unfortunately, youll have to pay for most of it. Most of the parking in the major downtown and beach areas of Huntington Beach is metered, along the Pacific Coast Highway and adjacent streets downtown. Beach parking lots can be found on the beach side of the Pacific Coast Highway and cost up to $30 per day, which can get quite pricey if youre only planning to spend an hour or two there!
Local tip: If youre looking for free parking, you can try the residential areas several blocks away from the beach or north towards Dog Beach. Youll just have to walk a little!

An Introduction To Huntington Beach Surf
Hailed as Surf City USA, Huntington Beach is a real mecca for wave lovers on the West Coast. Its one of the most important surf towns in the world, let alone just in California. It was the stomping ground of Irish-Hawaiian surf pioneer George Freeth back in 1908, and The Big Kahuna himself, Duke Kahanamoku, choose Huntington as his base in later decades. Thats the history, and today a whole industry lives off it there are surf shops, surf schools, surf camps and more packed into the vibrant town center.
The waves revolve around the legendary Huntington Beach Pier. Its got breaks to the north and south, which will work on different swell directions. They peel across the beach on one side, but also give those death-defying rides through the timber joists if youre feeling Houdini-esque. Loads of WSL and regional surf comps make use of those spots, but there are more up and down the beach, offering a mix of sandbar waves and tubey river mouths that extend south to Newport Beach and as far north as Long Beach.
