Hike the Kalalau Trail

This unforgettable 11-mile trek starts at Kee Beach, follows a rugged stretch of the majestic Na Pali Coast and deposits you at pristine Kalalau Beach. The terrain is accessible only by foot, kayak or air so you feel like youre in on a local secret. And if these unbelievable vistas look like something right out of Steven Spielbergs Jurassic Park, well . . . its because they are.

Look out! Its the Hanalei Lookout!

Hunter, jade, olive, moss, kelly: It seems as though every shade of green is on display in layer after layer of taro fields, riverbank and mountain foliage. The best part? These staggering views can be yours with just a quick stop along highway 56 in Princeville, and they deliver that quintessentially Hawaiian setting you crave. Perfect for jealousy-inducing selfies.

Snorkel at Tunnels

The coral reef at Tunnels is so massive you can see it from space. Currents are strong and parking scarce but if youre a good swimmer with good gear you will be regaled by a rainbow of sea life. Make friends with sea turtles, boxfish, unicorn fish, grouper, moray eels and of course the humuhumunukunukuapuaa Hawaiis shimmer-golden state fish.

Lihue Where To Stay In Kauai On A Budget

Lihue is the second largest town on the island and the best neighborhood in Kauai to stay in if youre on a tighter budget. Therefore, this is the part of the island we recommend all of the Hawaii backpackers to stay at. It sees fewer tourists than other areas but still contains enough amenities like shops and restaurants to be a convenient place to stay. Lihue is a more local area. It was founded by sugar planters and remains a fairly small, simple place where the residents go about their daily lives.

Its also the county seat of Kauai and contains several government establishments. What this means is that Lihue isnt as picturesque or romantic as other towns, but it is convenient to other areas and offers cheaper accommodation.

Juergen_Wallstabe

Thats not to say that Lihue is completely boring or devoid of charm. You can pick up some amazing, bargain souvenirs in this town as well as cheap but delicious places to have a meal. And one of the islands most beautiful beaches, Kalapaki Beach, is close by as well.

Do I Need A Rental Car On Kauai

Best Place to Stay on Kauai

Need? No.

But I vote yes.

Heres why

To really get out and see the island, its best to have a rental car. This is true no matter where on the island you stay. Kauais best sights are scattered all over the island.

Luckily, driving on Kauai is easy and distances are short. You can see many of the islands highlights in a single day.

We used RentalCars.com to find our car and loved having the flexibility to drive ourselves around the island. We spent a full day touring on our own schedule, hitting the brakes for every yummy-looking food truck along the way!

Plus, if youre staying in a hotel or condo with a kitchen, youll need the occasional grocery store run for provisions. More on that next

Bottom Line: Yes, you can get by without a rental car. But for ultimate independence, get your own wheels.

Tip:Be sure to book your rental car well in advance. Rental cars are a hot commodity in Hawaii right now since many rental car companies sold off much of their fleet during lockdown.

More About The Weather

Its called the Garden Island for several reasons, including the fact that it receives the most rain of any of the Hawaii islands. Technically, the middle of the island is the rainiest spot on earth.

Having said that, most of the rain is in the center interior rather than the coast, it mostly falls at night, and most daytime rainfalls are brief sometimes only 10 minutes once or maybe a few times in a day, and typically followed by brilliant sunshine.

The average yearly temperature ranges between 21C and 29C . Ocean temperatures are also in the perfect zone, ranging from 23C to 27C year-round.

The seasonal differences range mostly with regard to rainfall, with the most rain occurring between December and February.

The north coast tends to have almost twice as much annual rainfall as does the south coast .

However, both the north and south of the island are mostly covered in sunshine most of the year.

North Shore: Princeville And Hanalei

The North Shore of Kauai is simply stunning. From the lush landscape to the crescent-shaped beach in Hanalei, the North Shore looks exactly like what youd expect from the island where so much of Jurrasic Park was filmed.

When choosing your location on the North Shore, you have two main options: Princeville and Hanalei.

Princeville sits high upon a cliff overlooking the ocean and has numerous housing communities, vacation rental options, and resorts. There is no downtown, but youll find most of what you need at the Princeville shopping center. Beach access can be a bit tricky with young kids as most beaches involve a steep walk down the bluff.

Hanalei is a quick 10-minute drive from Princeville, but youll feel as though youre in a different world. A charming downtown welcomes visitors and Hanalei bay stretches for nearly two miles, making a beach day easy with kids . There are plenty of options for food and outdoor activities, but the town lacks large resorts. Youll find a few charming inns, but not many other options for accommodations.

Why stay on the North Shore of Kauai? A charming town, outdoor adventures, and lush landscape.

Why skip the North Shore of Kauai? A bigger chance of rain and rough oceans in the winter.

Is the North Shore calling your name? These are some of our favorite accommodation options.
