Pay Your Respects At Ringfinnan Garden Of Remembrance

10 Best Places to Visit in Ireland – Travel Video

The Ringfinnan Garden of Remembrance is dedicated to Father Mychal Judge and the 343 firefighters who lost their lives in the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attack on New York’s Twin Towers.

This verdant garden contains rows of trees planted in honor of each of these victims around a stone memorial overlooking the surrounding countryside. A fire truck red fence serves as its entrance, and multiple benches are provided for those who would like to sit while paying their respects.

Ringfinnan Garden was created by Kathleen Murphy, a prior resident of Ringfinnan who moved to New York to work as a nurse. Kathleen wanted to create this garden to memorialize the men whose courage she so greatly admired.

Kinsale was like the French Riveria when we visited – hot hot weather – the atmosphere the marina the docked boats the still water, busy busy but all added to the experience. Restaurants were all booked up the night we arrived so we got a take away fish and chip from DINOS on the quay and were not disappointed – definitely a must when visiting and a great covid friendly queuing system and pre ordering – only allowing one of each group into the shop when paying.Dined in Jim Edwards PUB Restaurant the next night – food was FAB.Kinsale is a culinary heaven . . . but you probably need to book.WAS so impressed with the staff and food at COSY CAFE dined there each day for breakfast which set up well for trips to the beach and OLD HEAD Dont leave without visiting Fort Charles either! via the Scilly Walk and stop off at the BULMAN bar

The Bulman Bar & Toddies

The Bulman Bar is one of my favourite pubs in Kinsale, but theres far more on offer than a great pint. Toddies Restaurant, like the bar, is full of character, with traditional charm meeting contemporary comfort.

Just 10 meters from the ocean, seafood is the main attraction, and a team of award-winning chefs whip up an incredible menu that changes pretty much day by day depending on whats been reeled in.

Freshly caught lobster, oysters, prawns, fish and more are regular features on the menu, but theres also Irish pies and a wealth of other traditional Irish dishes.

If you love sushi, theyve also been known to create some amazing Irish sushi menus in the past, so keep an eye out!

Fancy a walk? If you do the Scilly Walk in Kinsale, you can grab a bite to eat at the Bulman at the halfway point! The nearby Old Head of Kinsale walk is worth doing, too.

Appreciate The View From Old Head Signal Tower

Way back during the Napoleonic era, more than 200 years ago, the French threatened to invade Ireland. Kinsale decided to boost its protection by building The Old Head Signal Tower. The 25th of 81 towers built within sight of each other, it was created to warn of an approaching attack.

The tower is located on a vast headland, called Old Head, that juts into the Atlantic Ocean and offers tremendous vistas, especially when viewed from the top of the tower. It gets super windy at this wide-open space, so pack a warm sweater and keep your feet well planted.

This headland was the closest point of land to the Lusitania, a ship that was torpedoed in the ocean in 1915. The Old Head Signal Tower devotes its first floor to the Lusitania Museum in tribute to the tragedy.

Desmond Castle And Wine Museum

Built as a fortified home in the town by the Earl of Desmond in about 1500, it has, at various times, posed as a customs house, a prison for American privateers during the American war of Independence, an ordnance store, and a workhouse for the starving poor of the Great Famine. It was used as an arsenal during the Spanish occupation of the town by Don Juan Aguilla in 1601.

The castle has housed the International Museum of Wine since 1997 and an exhibition describes the story of Irelands Winegeese the soldiers who fled Ireland for France after the Treaty of Limerick was signed in 1691.
