Here you can swim and splash in the waves or build sandcastles on the beach which is why Kaanapali is our top choice for where to stay in Maui for families.

Are you all packed for Maui?with 31 essential items you dont want to forget!
Paia Makawao And Kula
Why these areas are great: Upcountry is magical. Although not the typical beach vacation, time spent in the mountains of Maui is rejuvenating, peaceful, and only a short drive to Paia beaches, North Shore surf, and classic Paia and Makawao town centers. Dont forget to check out Haleakalas dormant volcano, Makawaos pine forest, and Iao Valleys lush rainforests and waterfalls. Also, the incredibly scenic road to Hana is right there easily accessible.
Keep in mind: You will need a rental car for all these locations as everything is about a 10-45 minute drive. If you are visiting during the winter months Upcountry can be quite cool, so bring hoodies and sweatpants. Makawao can stay misty and cloud-covered, but as soon as you hit Kula or head down to the Paia beaches, the mist clears. Haiku is notorious for massive mosquitos, while in other areas of Upcountry or Iao Valley insects are more sparse.

Which Has Better Beaches Lahaina Or Paia
The beach at Lahaina is attractiveits a Maui beach, of course, it isbut not spectacular. At least, not compared to other beaches on the island. However, when you stay in Lahaina, youre just a short journey away from Kaanapali, and Kaanapali has one of the best beaches in the world.
As in, Kaanapali has literally won awards for its beach. West Maui is also home to Oneloa Beach, and D.T. Fleming Beach to the north. Head south, and you have spectacular snorkeling at Olowalu.
Paia has gorgeous beaches right on your doorstep. First, theres Baldwin Beach Park. The most popular beach on the North Shore, Baldwin Beach Park has plenty of facilities, soft sands, and invigorating surf.
Baby Beach is a beach and protected lagoon, which is technically part of Baldwin Beach. Here, the sand is just as soft, but the surf is calmer. An early morning swim at Baby Beach is the perfect way to start the day.
Finally, we have Hookipa Beach Park. Not one for swimmers, the sight of sea turtles and professional windsurfers makes the trips worth it.
Staying Along The Hana Highway
Including Paia & Hana
The Eastside of Maui is definitely the most remote side of the island. Its here youll find the famous Hana Highway .
While debatably the most scenic part of Maui, youll find accommodations few and far between here, mostly with options limited to small B& Bs and Inns along the highway.
There are several good shops available along the coast here, especially in Paia.
East Maui Highlights
Its about 53 miles to Hana town from Kahului Airport , and the drive takes about 2 – 2.5 hours. While most visitors will drive the Road to Hana in and back out on the same day, there are options for those looking to stay in Hana too.
East Maui Caveats
The main downside to staying in East Maui is that beyond exploring the Hana Highway, theres almost literally nothing to do here. It is also wetter and rainier along this stretch of the island, so be prepared for rain if you do stay here.
- Great proximity to the sights of the Hana Highway and Oheo Gulch
- Small, but beautiful, variety of beaches
- Can be very wet, especially during the winter
- Is geographically very isolated, a great distance from all other attractions
- Paia can experience a decent amount of rain

Is It Cheaper To Stay In Lahaina Or Paia
Lahaina is home to a few small boutique hotels, with larger resorts located further up the coast of West Maui. A stay here can be expensive, especially as the food and restaurants charge high tourist prices.
However, as a larger town with plenty of visitor areas nearby, theres a lot to choose from.
Paia is smaller and tends to be a lower-priced stay. There arent any big resorts. Instead, charming and unusual guest houses welcome visitors.
Restaurants and food stores are also well priced, and nearby Kahului has cheaper eats as well. But Paia is small, so choices are limited.

Westin Maui Resort & Spa
My #1 pick on Kaanapali Beach and probably the west side in general. Its kid friendly, but not kid-centric with a great location and a brand new luxury tower . Location & Vibe
Located on one of the most popular stretches of beach on Maui, the Westin Maui on Kaanapali Beach is home to some fantastic amenities and activities. With its $120 million renovation recently completed, the Westin Maui has become one of the best places to stay on Maui if youre looking for a beachfront mega-resort thats a notch below the most high end luxury options.
While the Westin Maui can feel a little busy and crowded, especially during peak travel times, its a great choice for those looking for a full resort experience. The beach here is very long and wide so theres plenty of space to spread out.
Resort Highlights & Amenities
The pool area is a real highlight of the resort. Its basically a waterpark. The Westin has five different pools including two water slides, a family pool/splash pad, waterfalls, an adults only pool and of course a pool bar.
Overall, the resort has a gorgeous layout with lots of trees, pools and lagoons, views, etc and its even better since the renovation.
The 770 guest rooms at the Westin Maui are spread out between two towers and while theyre nothing spectacular, theyre nice enough. Every room has a balcony with either garden or ocean view.
There are two golf courses right next to the Westin Maui in the Kaanapali Resort area.
