Another beautiful option, this time on the quieter side of the road that runs below the nightlife district, is Palácio das Especiarias Guesthouse. A restored 400-year old building filled with gorgeous historical details and decor. There is a cute little garden and some rooms have Juliette balconies. Ive lost count of how many times Ive stayed in Lisbon over the 9 years Ive been living in Portugal. Its such a fascinating, ever-changing city that theres always an excuse to visit. Almost every time Ive been, Ive stayed in a different area in order to get a more rounded feel for the different Lisbon neighborhoods, and find the best places to stay in Lisbon.
As I prefer getting around on foot, I tend to pick central locations. That said, Ive also stayed in some that are a little further away from the centre but easily accessible by public transport, like Alcântara.
Each Lisbon neighbourhood has a different personality so depending on what you want to do while youre visiting, theres an area to suit you.

Where To Stay In Lisbon Avenida Da Liberdade Is Ultra Convenient
Not really a neighborhood, per se, its worth also mentioning Avenida da Liberdade, the wide leafy avenue that leads away from the Baixa towards Parque Eduardo VII.
This is where youll find expensive designer shops like Gucci and 5-star hotels, especially around the Marquês do Pombal roundabout. If youre willing to walk a few blocks off the avenue, you can find more budget-friendly accommodation!
Note from Katie Weve stayed in and around this area on several trips to Lisbon, and have found it to be a good compromise between quiet and central. That said, we walk A LOT, and didnt mind the 25-minute walk from Marquês do Pombal roundabout into Baixa and Chiado.
Regardless of whether you stay in one of the hotels on or just off of Avenida da Liberdade, wed recommend you checking out the Quiosques that line the pedestrianized walkways running up and down each side. On nice evenings, theyre filled with locals enjoying cheap snacks and drinks, and sometimes catching a football match.
BessaHotel Liberdade Contemporary and sleek, the BessaHotel Liberdade has very modern yet inviting rooms with rain showers that past guests have loved. If thats not relaxing enough, the hotel features a sauna and Turkish bath as well as a pool and fitness center. The location doesnt get much better, 3 minute walk to Restauradores Square, with great shops, restaurants and cafes, and the metro.

Chiado One Of The Best Areas Where To Stay In Lisbon
In 1988, a major fire destroyed 18 buildings in the Chiado district, a disaster said to be second only to the big earthquake of 1755. Ten years later, in 1998, like the phoenix rising from the ashes, Chiados rebuilding was finally completed.
A new shopping centre and metro station were included inside, while outside, the old buildings original façades were faithfully reproduced. As you meander through the streets of Chiado, look out for the ruins of Convento do Carmo. It is the largest building still standing after the 1755 earthquake.
Old 18th century dwellings, traditional cafes, imposing theatres, and retro-boutiques, happily co-exist with modern shopping malls, designer stores, and fashionable beauty salons. If you have a love of modern art, a visit to the Museu do Chiado is a must.
In the evening you can enjoy a real taste of Chiados bohemianism, when the local hippie population and students emerge to enjoy the nightlife in the taverns and restaurants.
Look out for Tavares Rico, a Michelin starred restaurant and said to be the oldest in Lisbon. Dine al-fresco at the Terreiro do Paço, or eat under the arches at Largos.
To round off the warm evenings, find yourself a table on the terrace of one of the many taverns, order a drink, and do a little people watching as the world passes by.
With its excellent range of accommodations to suit all budgets it is a popular district to stay in Lisbon with all age groups.
BEST PLACES TO STAY IN LISBON IN CHIADO
Belem For A History Of Portugals Seafaring Past
With Belem being just 5km from Lisbon central, many visitors choose to commute into the district for their sightseeing. However, during busy times queues can be long and slow moving.
In the 15th century, one Vasco da Gama set sail from Belem, to blaze a nautical trail to the Indian continent. It was the start of Portugals period of empire building. Today, many of Belems lavish buildings stand testament to its rich colonial past.
One of the districts most popular attractions is the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, a former monastery. Building started in the early 16th century and, with its elaborate cloisters, stonework, and sculptures, took 100 years to complete.
Visit the Torre de Belem, a 16th century waterside fortress. Close by is the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, a sculptured nautical history of 33 of Portugals most famous seafaring explorers.
If you want to take the weight off tired legs, how about booking a boat excursion on the River Tejo, a great photo opportunity for a mariners eye view of Belem. As midday approaches, its time to consider lunch or a snack in one of the many cafes and coffee shops.
Time to sample one of Portugals favourite pastries, a snack developed in the 1600s by the Catholic monks of the Hieronymites Monastery in Belem.
Although variations of the pastéis de nata, , have become a firm favourite across Western Europe, the original recipe, is still a closely guarded secret.

Best Part Of The City To Stay In Lisbon
What is the best part of the city to stay in if you want to be able to walk out your hotel and easily find restaurants and safe lively nigh life? During the day we usually leave the hotel area anyway to explore and sightsee, but we like to stay close to the hotel in the evening but still go out to eat and stroll around interesting neighborhoods.
The guide books indicate that Bairro Alto has a great night life with lots of restaurants, but most sites I’ve visited don’t recommend it as a place to stay, why is that?

Bairro Alto is also known as the high district and is the trendiest part of the town packed with exclusive boutiques and cafes. Even though this has a good location the best location for the restaurants is along the Avenue da Liberdade which leads into the main restaurant areas and onto Rossie. As for eating, the streets around Av. Liberdade are a good option, but be aware that the restaurante around Rossio are very touristy and although good they will not give you a genuine feeling of eating out in Lisbon. Bairro Alto and Alfama are the best choices for this. Alcântara has its share of good places where locals go to .
Lisbon Neighborhoods To Avoid
Sometimes, if youre traveling on a budget or didnt plan your trip in advance, most of the hotels are full and you have to choose a different area than the one you want. This is something that has happened to us and probably to every traveler at some point.
In case this happens to you, Ill tell you which Lisbon neighborhoods you should avoid because they are violent or have a high crime rate, although I have to say that, in general, Lisbon is a very safe city.

Baixais the best neighborhood to stay in Lisbon because its right in the center, so you can get anywhere by walking.
In addition, this city is one of the few that boasts affordable hotels in Lisbon downtown.

If you stay here, youll be very close to Avenida da Liberdade, Praça dos Restauradores, Praça do Rossio, Praça da Figueira, Praça do Comercio, and the Santa Justa Elevator.
We got a great Lisbon city center hotel deal during our first visit to this city, and we stayed at the Lisbon Art Stay Apartments Baixa. We loved the hotel, and although weve since tried other accommodations, I think well stay there the next time we go to Lisbon since its neat and cozy.

Avenida Da Liberdade Not A District But A Luxurious Place To Stay In Lisbon
The Avenida da Liberdade is Lisbons main avenue, and often compared to Frances Champs-Élysées for sheer grandeur. At 1.5km in length, it stretches from Baixas Restauradores Square, to the Marques de Pombal Square.
Ninety metres wide, the avenue can carry 10 lanes of traffic, but that is not how to get the best from the Avenida da Liberdade.
On each side, tree lined cobbled walkways discretely shade a shopaholics paradise. Designer stores such as Gucci, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, and Prada stretch along the boulevard.
Five-star and boutique hotels, chic fashion outlets, shopping malls, high end restaurants, coffee shops, and street-food vendors, all offer the best of Lisbon hospitality.
A stroll along the avenue is not just about retail therapy, window shopping, or food breaks. Along its length are many grand 19th century buildings, beautiful water features, a monument in memorandum of Portugals 50,000 killed in the First World War, and more of Lisbons black and white tile mosaics.
Relax in The Eduardo VII Park. It is Lisbons largest park, and has three large greenhouses housing exotic plant life from around the world.
Depending on the time of your visit, many of Portugals national festivals take place on the Avenida da Liberdade, including the Saint Festivals through the middle of June. Months of preparation are undertaken on the many floats for the carnival, and locals celebrate with grilled sardines, and copious amounts of beer and wine.
