As always, we like to start these guides with our own personal experience staying in New York City.
Im going to disregard my first time in New York City, which was a two day trip where I spent most of my time inside a conference room.
The next two trips were both weeklong affairs, and over the course of that time we stayed in a couple of different places.
Hotel Recommendation
The Arlo Midtown
In a great, central location a few blocks from both Penn Station and Times Square, this is a solid mid-range hotel with compact-but-comfortable rooms and a nice rooftop bar.
Our First Real Trip to New York City
For the first weeklong trip, we stayed in the Flatiron District, which is SPOILER ALERT our top recommendation. We love this area, from the greenery of Madison Park and Union Square, to the excellent bars, restaurants, and coffee shops that it has to offer.
Plus, its a great central location between Midtown and Central Park, and Lower Manhattan .
We stayed at two separate hotels during that trip.
First, we spent a few nights at the budget-friendly Freehand Hotel. The Freehand is part hostel, with smaller-than-average rooms, great common areas , and lower-than-average prices, and part boutique hotel, with stylish decor and good service.
Rooms are smallish, though they do have some bigger configurations, and have some creative layouts for groups traveling together . Overall, we were fans, and the price was right at the time.

Woodstock & Kaaterskill Falls
Woodstock maintains its warm hippie reputation to this day. Upon arriving, you may be lucky enough to hear some live music in the downtown area as we did. Travel along Tinker Street to view museums and galleries, or take classes at Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild.
You can also take a class in traditional woodworking, where youll learn how to use traditional hand tools such as planes, saws, and chisels at a professional shop in Woodstock.
For some amazing tacos, stop by Oriole 9. And for dessert, Sweet Dreams Organic is a must. Both are in the downtown area and within walking distance from each other.
Some of our favorite upstate NY tourist attractions are around here, like Kaaterskill Falls . The falls are the highest cascading waterfall in New York. The bottom of the falls are typically crowded, so arrive early to avoid crowds. However, the top of the falls also has a beach area and is often missed by tourists. Also, visit Overlook Mountain, a challenging uphill journey with ruins to explore and a museum at the summit.
If youd like to stay in Woodstock then you should consider staying in this cute 1 bedroom camping cabin thats set in over 20 acres of woodland, overlooking a lake. The cabin is off-grid but you will have some basic necessities such as a water pump, and a charger for your phone, but this cabin gives you the chance of going offline and relaxing whilst enjoying nature.

Finding Your Bearings In New York

The Buttermilk Falls State Park is one of our favorite places to go upstate NY. Many lovely hiking trails lead to natural pools, streams, unique rock formations, gorges, and waterfalls. Visitors can even swim at the bottom of Buttermilk Falls but only when a lifeguard is present. Be sure to pay attention to any notices regarding trail conditions, Covid-19 restrictions, and other important news when you enter the park.
If you want more than a day trip to this beautiful spot, camp here in a tent or in a cabin. Buttermilk Falls State Park has both historic and modern cabins to choose from.

Breakneck Ridge Cold Spring

This steep hike is one of the most challenging hikes on this list, but its also one of the most popular due to its proximity to New York City. On weekends, there is even a direct train on Metro-North from Grand Central Terminal to Breakneck Ridge, which takes about an hour-and-a-half. The trail is a little over 3 miles roundtrip, but it starts with a steep ascent almost immediately, and there is also a lot of rock scrambling and climbing, making it all the more satisfying when you reach the top. Be aware that its not a good idea to bring pets along because of the rock climbing required.
