Domaine Des Andols Saint
Contemporary meets historic
An eccentric cluster of stone houses set in a fertile swathe of the Lubéron, Domaine des Andéols isn’t just festooned with modern art, but has also hosted exhibitions by Martin Parr, Ellen von Unwerth and Daido Moriyama.
The library is more like a fantastic museum bookshop, and the 20 rooms, spread over 10 maisons, are filled with artworks, bold colour and striking design. Maison des Lointains has its own Warhols Maison des terrasses is blue-on-blue, with a great big deck Maison de l’artiste is the calmest and most conventional space.
Next to the restaurant, which serves the domaine’s own olive oil and dozens of varieties of tomato, is a tiny indoor bar, where vintage films are projected over a little plunge pool that marks the entrance to the Andéols spa. Day : Fontaine De Vaucluse + Abbaye Notre
Fontaine de Vaucluse
Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is a picturesque medieval village built around spring and surrounded by high cliffs, not to mention a UNESCO World Heritage site. Famous for its emerald-green water and Sorgue River, the sun-filled Provençal town is perfect for a morning trip.
One of the main attractions in town is The Source of the Sorgue River. What seems like a pool of still water, The Source – also known as the fountain – is continuously fed by a network of underground water, from which flows Sorgue one of the most important rivers in Provence. To get to the fountain, follow the footpath and you will find it at the end of the trail. As you make your way there, make sure to admire the old ruins and small historical monuments as well as the whimsical waterwheels.
Where to park in Fontaine de Vaucluse
Right outside town, you will find a parking lot for about 3 Euros. From the parking lot is a short walk to the village.
Best time to visit Fontaine de Vaucluse
The best time to visit Fontaine de Vaucluse is in the spring. You will find fewer people, and because of the rain season, the river will be flowing strong. Summer is the towns business season, so you are guaranteed lots of people and all trying to converge at the fountain which is already a small area. Arrive early to avoid the crowd.

Traditional Architecture in Provence
The rural architecture of Provence features two distinctive types of farmhouses: the mas and the bastide. Some of these traditional constructions are today some of the best hotels in Provence.
A MAS was a largely self-sufficient economic unit, which could produce fruits, vegetables, meat, milk, and even silk. The house was usually built of local stone with a sloping Roman tile roof. It was a long rectangle, two or three stories high, with the kitchen and space for animals on the ground floor, and bedrooms, storage space for food, and often a room for raising silkworms on the first floor. As the family grew larger, the mas would be extended to make new rooms. The mas usually faced south to provide protection from the Mistral wind and it had few, small windows to keep out the summer heat and to keep in the heat in winter.

Towns In Provence Region Of France: Gordes
The small village of Gordes, perched on top of a cliff above the valley of Calavon is one of the most charming Provence towns to visit. Inhabited since Roman times, Gordes, is a delightful place to spend time in. The Mediterranean climate and relaxed pace of life create the perfect vacation environment. It is quite easy to spend the whole day doing nothing much: wandering the winding streets, leisurely taking coffee at a café and watching the world slowly go by, spending hours over a good meal in one of the many restaurants and watching the spectacular sunsets over the lavender fields in the valley below.
Gordes does however have a tragic history. During the Second World War, Gordes was a stronghold of the French resistance . Towards the end of the war, a German patrol was ambushed near to Gordes and the following day the town was heavily bombarded and 20 villagers died. There is a monument in the centre of Gordes to commemorate this event and the village was awarded the Croix de Guerre silver star by the French government in 1948 to celebrate the bravery and loss of its inhabitants.
We did manage to spend a lovely afternoon in Gordes before driving back home. It was one of those stunningly hot Southern France days and we spent the whole time dodging into shadows and browsing in air conditioned shops. It is a very beautiful town and you can easily spend a relaxing day here, just wandering around the narrow streets.

Best Places South Of France: Around Marseille Toulon Cassis And Hyeres
This is my personal favourite. The coastal town of Cassis is just beautiful. There is a gorgeous inlet called the Calanques de Cassis, where the water is crystal clear and a beautiful turquoise colour. The sea is framed by these high white cliffs and you can hire a boat from the harbour in Marseille and go fishing or snorkling. Cassis itself is a small place, but it has everything that you will need.
Nearby Toulon is a bigger town, but it boasts some excellent restaurants and an enormous daily market. Hyeres is the oldest resort on the Cote d’Azur and it is famous for growing Palm trees. Marseille is France’s second city. It is a big place and like all big cities, it does have its rougher-side to it. But if you are streetwise and sensible, you can also unearth some great neighbourhoods. We spent a weekend with frieds in central Marseille last year. We took the kids and had a great time. The Old Port area is probably where you will want to spend most of your time, but do take a water taxi out to one of the local beaches because you will get the best view of Marseille.
Best Places To Stay South Of France
The South of France is a great place to visit. It has a wonderful climate with long warm summer days stretching through to September and October. The French Riviera is a really super coastline, with many fantastic beaches. We live in the South of France all year around and we absolutely love being here. We are always out and about visiting new villa rental properites and researching tourism articles about the South of France.
You will also find a rich variety of places to visit, from chic resorts, sleepy old villages and astonishing historical monuments dating back to Roman times . Whilst the French Riviera coast can get very crowded in the height of summer, there are still plenty of more places to stay, where you can get unspoilt peace and tranquility .
With 10 local airports in Southern France, it is easy to fly into the region and the road network and the trains are superb – so getting around is quite simple.

Best Area To Stay In Provence For Lavender Fields
From June to August Provence becomes a patchwork of purple fields as the famed lavender fields come into bloom. And while you can find violet visions throughout the region there are two spots that stand out from the crowd.
Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque is a sacred place at all times of the year. But come summer, its doubly impressive as the flowering lavender fields frame the 12th-century monastery.
Meanwhile, further east at the Plateau de Valensole, lavender fields fan out as far as the eye can see.
Dont miss: If youre a fan of lavender, a visit to Provences lavender museum is a must-do while youre in the area! Here youll learn about what makes the plant so special and how it has been a vital part of Provençal living for centuries.
