VISIT THE FOUNTAIN OF ST. GEORGE | If youve ever been to the German Pavilion in Walt Disney World Orlando you may have seen the replica, but why not check out the real deal in the Marktplatz. This fountain has been in Rothenburg for over 400 years and makes for a cool photo opportunity. In the photo below youll spot it behind the flowers because I didnt realize that I was right by this famous fountain.
| Make sure to stop at Plönlein, the most charming spot in town and a popular angle youve probably seen on Instagram. This is one of Rothenburgs most iconic streets and made an appearance on Disneys Pinocchio .
CATCH THE NIGHT WATCHMAN TOUR | If youre there in the evening, try to catch the Rothenburg Night Watchman tour. Its a free walking tour and supposedly quite entertaining and informative. We had it on our list but due to our hotel drama, we werent able to make it.
VISIT A CRIME MUSEUM | This is another thing I had on my list but we werent able to do. The Medieval Crime Museum has exhibits on over 1,000 years of crime and punishment in Germany with a focus on the torture tools used.

In the historic commandery for the Order of St John is an often grisly museum covering 1,000 years of crime and its consequences.
Theres a special interest in Medieval and Renaissance trials, methods of torture and punishment.
And although these various instruments hold a morbid fascination theres also a lot of enlightening detail about religious inquisitions and the history of the police and courts on the second floor.
These exhibits call on legal manuscripts, a collection of seals and old prints depicting trials.
On the first floor is an authentic iron maiden, along with pillories and an alarming amount of devices made especially for women like shrews fiddles and scolds bridles.
Outside is a genuine cucking stool, also for unruly women and dishonest tradesmen.
Parking Tips In Rothenburg
With that in mind, parking is a nightmare. Its best to park your vehicle for the entirety of your stay outside of the walls. Then plan to walk as your main method of getting around. Its not a very big place, but comfy shoes are a must.
Youll find that many accommodations will have you park outside of the walled portion of the city.
There are more parking lots that are less expensive. Be sure to ask your hotel where you should park when you book your stay.
Take note of which gate you enter through, as some of them look the same!

So, we recommend using Google Maps to see which path you prefer before leaving Munich! Taking the train from Munich to Rothenburg ob der Tauber takes about 3-3.5 hours and is much easier than it may first appear! We highly suggest downloading the DB Navigator app from Deutsche Bahn to view up-to-date train times and transfers. Since youll have to change trains 2-3 times, the most budget-friendly way to travel to Rothenburg from Munich is to purchase a Bayern ticket for the day. This type of day ticket will cover all of your transfers on regional trains. Just make sure to choose regional transport only on the app to see possible routes that will accept the Bayern ticket.
Note that Bayern tickets are valid on Mondays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. or on weekends and public holidays, beginning at midnight. When you first arrive at Rothenburg, the walled city will be a little alarming when you drive up to it! When I arrived there, it didnt look like you could actually drive within the boundary.
Embarrassingly, it took me several minutes to figure out how to get into the city! So dont be alarmed when you arrive, yes you can drive in through any access point!
Unless its a one-way of course. And since the streets havent changed for hundreds of years, they will seem very narrow, just exercise a little more caution than normal.
