Best Hotels In Iceland For 2022

From Reykjavik to remote rural spots to view the Northern Lights, these are the best hotels in Iceland

Green by definition its energy provided by more than 200 volcanoes and a huge number of hot springs Iceland is a must-visit for anyone who loves nature in its rawest, wildest incarnation. And the best hotels in Iceland are the perfect place to start if you’re planning an adventure to the Land of Fire and Ice.

In Iceland, glaciers loom roadside, waterfalls thunder down within arms reach, geothermically toasty rivers invite you to strip off and plunge right in, and whales leap out of the sea beside you – it’s a place like nowhere else.

But while this country is all about the great outdoors, the best hotels in Iceland respond to the landscape in very special ways, providing alfresco amenities such as hot tubs but also warmly welcoming interiors that emulate rather than try to rival the landscape.

Local stone, wood, grasses and other materials are used in their construction – as seen most dramatically in the Torfhús Retreat with its green-roofed turfhouses – and earthy, sombre palettes echo the colours of the local moss, heather, berries and black-sand beaches.

Youre right on hand for the Myvatn Nature Baths, a naturally heated artificial lagoon with mineral-rich waters that make it a good alternative to the Blue Lagoon across the island.

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula has the nickname Iceland in Miniature, due to the wealth of its diverse sites and landscapes. It is best known for its crowning volcano and glacier, Snæfellsjökull, which has its own national park, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. It is also home to the Lóndrangar basalt pillars Kirkjufell Mountain the Buðahraun lava field Djúpalónssandur beach many waterfalls and beautiful fishing villages sat against dramatic coastlines, to name just some features.

Because of all of these attractions, Snæfellsnes has become an incredibly popular place to take day tours to see as much of it as possible, however, there is no better option than staying in accommodation on the peninsula itself. There are many choices, but the ones to make this list, due to their location and facilities, are the two Hálsaból Cottages.

Located on the northern side of Snæfellsnes, near the little town of Grundafjörður, the Hálsaból Cottages are in an excellent location to explore all of the sites listed. Their positioning is also beautiful they are perched atop a hill, with a mountain peak rising right behind them. The views from their porches are thus stunning.

Best Places To Stay In The Reykjanes Peninsula

When you arrive in Iceland, youre almost sure to arrive at Keflavik International Airport. The airport is actually located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about a 1-hour drive from Reykjavik, and is the best area to stay in Iceland just after arriving or just before departing. Typically international flights from the US arrive in the evening hours. Aside from the fact that you really want to examine your rental car in the daylight to give it a good once over to assess any prior damage, theres actually quite a bit to see around the Reykjanes Peninsula. We recommend just heading to one of the nearby hotels and getting a good nights sleep instead of making a long drive in the dark after a long day of travel. Or if youre leaving on an early flight, its really best just to stay near the airport.

Theres some really fantastic hotels on the Reykjanes Peninsula and this is an excellent area for spotting the Northern Lights during the Aurora season.

Luxury Accommodation On The Golden Circle

In a secret location about 1h from Reykjavik is the Buubble Hotel! . They keep the location secret so that nobody else goes other than guests since you are effectively sleeping in the wild without any protection and in transparent bubbles. The bubbles are spread in a forested area with tall trees that do not block the view of the sky by protect you from the other bubbles so nobody sees anyone. Best suited for couples as the bubbles are small have double beds only and shared bathroom facilities. They are very romantic so best enjoyed with a loved one.

The bubbles are the most unique accommodation I have ever slept in and spending a night there was a bucket list item that I very much enjoyed. I did it in the winter and we were so lucky that the Aurora Borealis, the main reason why you would brave temperatures of -20 and a plastic bubble in the middle of nowhere, showed up around 9pm making the spectacle above our heads absolutely breathtaking and incomparable to anything else I have ever seen

Cost: Luxury, the bubbles can only be booked in conjunction with a 24h Circle Road tour that costs around USD1,500 per person sharing
