About 70 miles north of the I-70 corridor that feeds Colorados busiest ski areas, Steamboat Springs seems removed from the usual luxury designer shops and rampant condo development so often seen in ski towns these days. Local craft makers, artists, brewers and restaurant owners lend indie flair to the towns main street, lined mostly with early-20th-century buildings. Supplementing Steamboats champagne powder and Western appeal, improvements at Steamboat Ski Resort by its owner, Alterra Mountain Company which also owns Deer Valley in Utah, and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows in California in its 14-resort portfolio include a new gondola that shortens the ride from 12 to less than 10 minutes and boosts capacity 38 percent to 3,600 people an hour. Given Steamboats in-town diversions, hot springs and variety of winter sports , many visitors come without Alpine ambitions. The town makes it easy even for those without a car free buses circulate nearly every 10 minutes in winter between downtown and the ski resort, supplemented by ride-sharing services.

Top 3 Neighborhoods To Stay In Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs is a much more local affair than some of the trendier places to stay in Colorado. The skiing and snowboarding are good here though crazy good. Dubbed champagne powder, the snow here is dry and light and allows for smooth, soft runs.

The scenery around Steamboat Springs is beautiful too, with less development than other resorts, giving it a distinctive charm. Despite being small and quaint, its still a composite town with a few different areas to choose from, each one making for a different experience.

The best option for first-timers in Steamboat Springs is the area around Gondola Square, a.k.a The Mountain. This is where most hotels and other accommodations are found, as this area has easy access to the slopes themselves. Its pretty easy to see why this spot is popular.

Further north is Downtown Steamboat Springs a good place to stay if youre traveling the USA on a budget . This part of town is historic and filled with plenty of buildings dating back to the early 1900s. Theres an art gallery, a local history museum, and plenty of places to eat and drink. Its fair to call this the hub of town.

Although Downtown is further from the gondolas and ski lifts, the shuttle bus that runs around Steamboat Springs will have you carving down the mountain in no time.

Now lets get into the nitty-gritty of these areas and see what makes them tick.

Take A Hot Springs Dip Naked

The World

Steamboat Springs Chamber

Soak at the Strawberry Park Hot Springs, one of the most popular tourist activities in town. After dark, this remote hot springs under the stars is clothing-optional and adult-only.

There are several different natural pools of varying temperatures. If youre feeling brave, dip your toes into the icy river, before retreating into the warmth of the natural hot springs. The hot-cold circuit is good for your circulation, and some believe it can improve your health.

You can even stay the night at Strawberry Park Hot Springs. Our favorite spot: a night in an old train caboose converted into a tiny room. Strawberry Park Hot Springs is pretty remote, deep in the forest and isolated. You will be glad you booked overnight and dont have to try to drive back through the winding roads after so much relaxation.

Drink Craft Beer In A Gondola

Have you ever tried dining in a gondola? Mountain Tap Brewery had an extraordinary idea of turning gondolas into private seating booths, equipped with tables, heaters, and Bluetooth speakers.

The gondolas came from Killington Ski Area in Vermont. They were refurbished and installed on the patio. The cabins expand the seating places of the restaurant and offer perfect outdoor dining opportunities while preventing the spread of the virus .

They provide a private and unique dining experience with craft beer and wood-fired cuisine on the menu. Each gondola cabin can hold up to 6 adults. No smoking within the cabins is allowed.

Although each gondola has a heater, remember to dress for winter! Gondolas are available by reservation.
