Few cities could be more romantic or beautiful than Italy’s Verona, the setting for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet one reason why Lonely Planet’s new 1,000 Ultimate Sights book pegs it as one of the world’s best places to fall in love.

But there’s much more to Verona than star-crossed lovers, or even stars themselves . A city that dates back to the Romans, Verona today is a delight of medieval palaces, winding streets, ancient ruins and elegant churches. And, since it’s only a one hour and 20 minute train ride from Venice, it makes a superb day trip or even an alternative base.

Its also full of medieval buildings, such as the sixteenth-century Palazzo Pompei, which now holds the collection of the Natural History Museum. Culture lovers can enjoy a musical evening at the Roman Theatre, housed in the former monastery of San Girolamo.

The monastery also contains the Archaeological Museum, with mosaics depicting a gladiator fight, bronzes and other sculptures.

First nicknamed Veronette by Napoleon, Veronettas San Pietro hill was the site of the first settlement in the area in pre-Roman times, leading to the creation of Verona itself.

At the time of its construction, the bridge was the longest of its kind in the world.

Connected to the Castle Vecchio, the bridge is decorated in the same style as the walls of the castle and features a fantastic series of crenulated battlements that you can see through down the River Adige.

As with most of the historic buildings of Verona created during this era, the bridge is made from red brick which makes it stand out against the landscape of the city.
