Drink A Beer While Overlooking The Matterhorn
There is plenty to do when you arrive at the Gornergrat Bahn summit, the obvious one being to take in the amazing panoramic views.
If you would prefer to sit and relax in the setting, there is also a cafe selling the most amazing apple strudel I ate while I was in Switzerland and the portions dont come up small!
You can also sample their own bier speciale, Calanda.
And One Of The Top Ski Resorts In The Alps For Dining Out
In town, top of the impressive list is the After Seven restaurant in the Backstage Hotel. With two Michelin stars and 17 Gault-Millau points, eating here would be the highlight of any stay in Zermatt. Ian Adam, the chef, has created a mix of locally inspired as well as more worldly dishes, based around an open concept kitchen which is the focal point of this extraordinary restaurant. The surprise menu is highly recommended and this includes a selection of perfectly matched wines.
In second place is The Omnia. The ambience is very cool and personal, said a reporter. There is also a table in a sort of turret out the side of the building, giving you full views to town below you, it was a very romantic place to have dinner.
The food was fantastic. It is something genuinely different from the usual Zermatt restaurants, even the fancy ones. All our food was stunning. Perfectly cooked, interesting flavours well matched. The portion size is not huge but it is plenty and, to be honest, really nice not to be given a half a cow!
Le Gitan has its own gypsy kebabs and succulent giant prawns. The rustic Schaeferstube in Hotel Julen, has lamb from its own flock. Rua Thai in Hotel Albana Real, has authentic Thai cuisine. Teppanyaki restaurant,Fuji of Zermatt is also in the Albana Real . The Veranda restaurant in Hotel Mirabeau is very highly regarded and has 14 Gault-Millau points.

It Is A Very Nice Holiday Place
It is a very nice holiday place. There are quite a lot of restaurants and shops in the town, which serve most of the needs for the holiday. The mountains are very beautiful with different activities for everyone to enjoy. The cable cars operate well and bring you to the mountain top . We went hiking and saw very nice views from a different perspective of the Matterhorn and the town. People can go skiing on the mountain top even in summer. We would go again and definitely stay longer to explore more.

Places To Visit In Zermatt: The Gornergrat Railway
The Gornergrat Bahn is Europes highest mountain railroad running through Switzerland. The train takes 45 minutes to climb 10kms to the summit of Gornergrat. And this train journey will provide you amazing views of the Matterhorn while climbing the Gornergrat.
The railroad climbs the east side of Nikolai valley and up the slopes of the Riffelberg in a wide curve, with ever more impressive views of the Matterhorn.
The next place gives spectacular views for photographers. It is the Rifflesee alpine lake. After a few minutes of the walk below the Rotenboden station, at 2819m, you will find this lake. And the photographers must catch the scene of mirrored view of Matterhorn on the lake in the mornings.
Then, you can continue the journey above the Gorner Glacier to the summit station at 3089m. From there, you will have to climb only 5 minutes to the Gornergrat observatory above the Gorner Glacier.
From that point, you can see the whole glacier views of Zermatt, Switzerland. That means it gives the most magnificent panoramas Alps. Matterhorn and Breithorn are in the middle while Zwillinge, Lyskamm, and Monte Rosa are on the left side, and the peaks of the Mischabel group are on the north side.

On The Hike From Gornergrat To Zermatt
There are three options for you to get back down to Zermatt
The great thing about buying a ticket on the Gornergrat Bahn is that you can stop off at all stations along the way.
So if you just wanted to stop off and get a different view of the mountains, thats okay.
Also, you could just walk a little of the way or between stations so its completely flexible.
One of the highlights of walking is you get to see their amazing lakes which should, on a clear, sunny and completely non-windy day give you a clear reflection of the peak of the Matterhorn.
But, as I said earlier, the clouds come in quickly! Despite this, the walk down is stunning and there are some cute cafes, bars and hotels to visit on your way down.

Hike The 5 Lakes Trail
Trail: Blauherd Stellisee Grindjisee Grünsee Moosjisee Leisee Sunnegga
Distance: ~9 km
Descent: 454 m
Time required: ~3 hours
5 beautiful lakes, the mighty Matterhorn, snowy mountains and impressive glaciers all await you on this lovely hike in Zermatt, also known as 5-Seenweg. One of the most famous trails in the Zermatt region, the 5 lakes hike is one of the best things to do if you are visiting Zermatt.
The 5 lakes trail is up there with the Gornergrat hike in how spectacular it is though I still prefer and recommend the Gornergrat hike if you had to choose. The 5 lakes hike is slightly less exciting.
Yet, the 5 lakes hike is unique in how long, yet how easy it is, suitable for even novices to hiking. Despite the ease, its very beautiful. The panoramic landscape views, the variety of the trail, the reflections of the Matterhorn in 3 of the lakes, the opportunity to swim in 2 of them, all make for a wonderful day out in the mountains.

Stupendous Views From Stockhorn And Gornergrat
The red from Riffelberg down to Furi is one of the nicest cruisers on the slopes above Zermatt as opposed to the ones across the border in Cervinia. Some people might find it a bit unnerving at the start, when its just a narrow strip of piste alongside the Gornergrat railway, but lower down beneath Riffelalp it becomes a wide, evenly-pitched beauty, lined with trees. Its a great place to go when the weathers bad and visibility is low. Plus theres an eight-seater gondola serving the run, so you can even ski laps to warm up.
Higher up on the Gornergrat, the runs are gentle blues and the views of the Matterhorn are stupendous. Youll pass a lot of people on the mountain, by the way, skiing at a snails pace because they cant stop staring at the view.
Zermatt has a formidable reputation amongst some advanced skiers especially when it comes to the much-vaunted freeriding. The place to head for is the north face of the Stockhorn and Hohtalli. When good skiers and boarders tell you how much they love Zermatt, its this area theyre usually thinking of. The Rote Nase cable-car opens from February and that gives access to an off-piste area below Stockhorn, but the drag-lifts have been out of commission for a few years as the glacier has melted and one of them now goes over a precipitous drop. There are some highly-rated freeriding routes there, as well as off the side of the magnificent White Hare piste from Hohtalli, down to Gant and Grunsee.
