Dupont Circle, north of the city, is the area where you can find cheap hotels in Washington, D.C. By affordable, I mean about $100 a night depending on the time of year. Hopefully, in the off-peak tourist season, you might find something for $70. It may seem like a lot for a cheap hotel in D.C., but if you take into account the prices for the rest of the areas, I assure you that it is cheap. This area is where we almost always stay when we come with groups of friends and there is someone who doesnt want to spend too much.
In this neighborhood, there are several embassies and historical buildings, and you will not be short of restaurants and places to eat. In my opinion, this is one of the best places to find cheap hotels in Washington, D.C., since you wont be too far from the tourist area of the city. It will take approximately 15 minutes to get to the center by public transport and about 30 minutes if you prefer to walk.

Quite possibly the closest of any hotel to the attractions along the National Mall, Kimpton Hotel Monaco Washington DC is only three blocks from the mall and directly across the street from the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the International Spy Museum. It is a landmark property housed in what once served as a post office building.
If you are traveling with a dog, the Kimpton is super pup friendly and never charges fees or limits size.
Opposite the White Houseand the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery and a block from the Smithsonian Museum of American History on the mall, the luxury W Washington D.C. is an iconic DC property that is about to undergo a name change and branding. At the time of writing, it had been announced the “W” would be removed from the hotel’s name shortly however, the property is not expected to close. Currently, it features glam rooms and suites, as well as a fabulous covered rooftop terrace with some of the best views in D.C.
Less than a block from the Renwick Gallery and the White House, Sofitel Washington DC is two blocks from the mall and the Smithsonian Museum of American History. Best Area To Stay In Washington Dc For Nightlife
There are three areas that come out as winners in this section.
The first one is Dupont Circle. It attracts a mature crowd with some beautiful late-night dining options and nice bars.
Its quite a sophisticated area although it tends to gather the younger generation on the weekend nights.
Suggested accommodations:
- Hotels: The Dupont Circle , Hotel Madera
- AirBnb & Holiday homes: Swann House
Adams Morgan is the alternative, especially if you want to mix with the very young crowd, possibly with some live music too.
And finally H Street NE for more of a hipster and communal atmosphere. Restaurants wise, you will find a great mix of alternatives, from Mexican to Vietnamese, from Italian to Thai. Plenty of late-drink bars.
I would not hesitate to suggest all of them for a visit and a night out. In fact, move around if you plan to stay in the city for a few days.
Unfortunately, Adams Morgan has no Metro stations and H Street NE has only a light train .
In this respect, I would suggest only Dupont Circle as a place to stay in Washington DC for nightlife and sightseeing, possibly as close to the Metro station as you can.

In a quiet residential neighborhood beyond Georgetown, the budget-priced Kimpton Glover Park Hotel sits on a street lined with restaurants. It’s close to American University, and there’s a shuttle bus to the University, Georgetown, and the Metro Station. It’s a short walk to the National Cathedral.
Well-located for fans of the Washington Nationals, only a 10-minute walk from the stadium, Courtyard Washington Capitol Hill/Navy Yardoverlooks a park where there’s a splash pool for kids in the summer and ice-skating in the winter. A Metro station is just around the corner.

Two Lovely Neighborhood I Would Not Stay In Washington Dc For Sightseeing
In the above map, you may have noticed two areas without a red border, Georgetown and Adams Morgan.
They are both nice areas on their own. But I would not suggest booking accommodation there.
Georgetown is a lovely neighborhood, with cobblestone streets, a beautiful architecture all around with the famous University right in the middle of it.
Unfortunately, there is no metro station and you will have fewer transportation options.
I really suggest sparing half-day or a full day for a visit but staying there may be not that practical, lots of walking.
Unless, of course, you visit a family member at the university and you want to be next door to her/him.
Adams Morgan has a nice and lively night scene. Some great restaurants and bars around.
And this may work great for a visit, especially if you want to mix with a nice young crowd, but there is no Metro station.
Not very practical to use as a base.
The lack of a Metro station makes both above areas not very practical for tourists.
National Mall The Best Place To Stay In Washington Dc
The National Mall is the best place to stay in Washington, D.C. for first-timers. Accommodations here are quite expensive, but if you are short on time, this is the best option since the main memorials, the Capitol, the White House, and most of the tourist attractions are here. If you can afford it, dont think twice about booking here.
If you are going to stay in the city for a longer time, its also a very good option, but you should bear in mind that due to its location and high demand, the prices are quite high. In my opinion, other well-located areas in Washington, D.C. are more suitable for multi-day stays. We dont stay in this area of Washington, D.C. anymore.

This cool loft is one of the low budget options in Washington, however, it comes with more value than youd expect. The living space is split up into two floors and with a comfy bunk bed, theres enough space for 4 people . We have to note that the apartment is on the 4th floor and there is no elevator. If you come with a lot of luggage, prepare for a little sweat session! Apart from this issue, the loft is one of the best homes you can find in Dupont Circle.
