Best Town To Stay In Kauai

What Side Of Kauai Has The Best Beaches

Best Places to visit in Kauai | KAUAI TRAVEL GUIDE

In Poipu, especially, there are some great beaches, shops, restaurants and other amenities you can enjoy within walking distance, especially on Kauai’s South Shore. Staying at Koloa Landing Resort, you can snorkel directly outside your door and walk down to the beautiful Kiahuna Beach within a ten-minute stroll.

Best Kauai Resorts For Families

Kauai is probably the most laid back Hawaiian Island. While there may not be as much to do on Kauai theres no shortage of beaches, hiking, and other outdoor activities that appeal to kids. There also arent a ton of beach resorts on Kauai but there are a few truly fabulous family friendly resorts on Kauai.

Also, I feel like this list needs a bit of a disclaimer: pretty much anywhere you go in Hawaii is going to be kid friendly. Hawaii is not a stuffy destination. The most posh and expensive hotels on the island cater to children quite amazingly and unless youre at the adults only pool , youll always find kids boogie boarding in the waves, bobbing around in the pool, and having dinner with their families. That being said, this list includes resorts that may appeal to children especially due to their pools or kids clubs, and parents due to their locations and convenience factors.

: The Kauai Marriott Resort is probably my #1 pick for families visiting Kauai. Its PACKED with amenities that are perfect for kids. This place has one of the largest pools in Hawaii and also has a separate kids pool with a waterslide. There is plenty of dining on property and nearby and the resorts location in Lihue makes it super convenient to the airport but also exploring the north and south sides of the island. Pricing starts at $300/night. Book a room directly with Marriott here and read hundreds of reviews here.

Finding A Place In Kauai

Wondering where to stay on Kauai? That’s a good question, and we have a fairly simple answer: It depends. That is, it depends on what types of accommodations, activities, and vibe you are looking for. It also depends on your budget, what type of scenery you want to be surrounded by, and proximity to the islands major attractions. In this article, well help break down each Kauai region to help you select the best location.

Let’s get a lay of the land that is Kauai. The island of Kauai has four major geographic areas to select from when choosing where to stay. In order of popularity , they are as follows:

  • The South Shore– including Koloa, Lawai, and Poipu
  • The North Shore– including Princeville, Hanalei, and Kilauea
  • The East Coast– including Kapaa, Wailua and, in this case, the county seat of Lihue
  • The West Side– including the towns of Waimea and Hanapepe
  • OK, that may not seem that simple. However, it really isn’t that difficult because it’s hard to make a bad choice on Kauai. But each area on Kauai has its own unique flavor and atmosphere – including its own attractions and sights to see.

On this page, we’ll cover each of the major Kauai regions you can find accommodations within. Here are this page’s highlights…

Where to Stay in Kauai: The Best Areas and Hotels

For families, the Sheraton Poipu is a great option. Its beachfront and has a pool where umbrella drinks abound for the adults. Like most other Hawaiian resorts, the pool can get busy, so if you prefer more space to yourself, the hotel also rents pool cabanas for the day. At the time I visited, the rate to rent cabanas was $150 for the day, however the front desk can give you a current quote.

Where To Stay On The North Shore Of Kauai

Hanalei is the most desirable place to stay on the North Shore as the small surfer town has a relaxed vibe, beautiful beach, and some delicious food trucks and restaurants. Accommodation is limited, though, and there are no large hotels or resorts.

If you can afford and find availability for a Hanalei vacation rental , go for it, but most of us will end up in nearby Princeville .

Princeville is a planned community of upscale homes, a golf course, and a couple of resorts. It felt rather soulless and overly manicured to us, but there are beautiful views from the cliffside location, a few small but lovely beaches , and its convenient for exploring the North Shore.

This hotel is one of the coolest places to stay in Kauai. It has comfortable rooms with all the essentials as well as an outdoor pool and sun deck where you can soak up the rays. The property is close to Princeville and Hanalei, so you shouldnt have any trouble getting around either!

Lodging Options On The East Shore

BEST South Shore town on Kauai | HAWAII vacation tips

    Lihue

Lihue is the big city of Kauai. Most of the lodging in Lihue consists of a few big hotels located near where the cruise ships dock with access to Kalapaki beach. I stayed there years ago but must admit it was my least favorite place to stay on Kauai and I havent stayed there again since. It is super touristy and you dont get the real feel of Kauai in that area.

    Wailua-

There are several big hotels and some vacation rentals in the Wailua area. Although Wailua doesnt have much of a town center, its in a perfect central location close to Lydgate State Park, Wailua River, hiking, and beaches.

    Kapaa

One of my favorite towns on Kauai is Kapaa. Its close to Wailua, so a great central location, but its also a fun little town. There are great restaurants, shops, food trucks, shave ice, and grocery stores. You can access the paved bike path a few blocks from the main street of Kapaa and rent bikes in town. Kapaa has a variety of vacation rentals, mainly condos, that are right on the ocean.

If you are staying in Kapaa, Waipouli Beach Resort is hands down the best place to stay with kids. This incredible resort is right on the beach with direct access to the bike/walking path. The best part is the pool with a lazy river and water slides! My family absolutely loves this place!

    Welcome To The North Shore

Beloved first and foremost for its spectacular natural beauty, the North Shore of Kauai is that jaw-dropping, how-can-this-be-real tropical paradise you see in your dreams. As you steer your rented Jeep up the one-lane Kuhio Highway from the East, there is a perceptible difference: The air starts to feel heavier, the foliage grows more lush and the greens look even more, well, green. Of course, it is perpetual rain that is creating all of this rich landscape, as it is wetter here than in any other inhabited part of the island. When you add in loads of sunshine, the North Shore weather becomes predictably unpredictable. If youre a rainbow lover you will be in your element.

An adventurers fantasy, as well, the North Shore offers majestic mountain ranges filled with trails, verdant valleys, thundering waterfalls to explore, white sand beaches, rolling waves full of surfers and some of the best snorkeling, paddle boarding and kayaking in the world. Family friendly activities offer fun for all levels and are limited only by your imagination. Spinner dolphins play in the water, sea turtles glide along the rocky under-bottom and schools of fish flash right by your face. Since the North Shore features some of the best Kauai beach resorts, too, there will be scads to do at your home base, as well.

Lifes a little slower here, so take cues from the locals. Look up from your phone, soak in whats around you, have a Mai Tai, and feel the happiness.

Best Airbnb In Hanalei: Hanalei Garden Surf Cottage

Located in the best neighborhood in Kauai to stay in if you want to be close to everything, this cottage offers a clean, reasonably priced place to stay in the heart of Hanalei. Its small but contains everything youll need during your stay and is only one block from the beach. Youll get the entire historic building to yourself, which includes a lanai and kitchen.
