Coolest Places To Stay In Banff

Fox Hotel And Suites Town Of Banff

TOP 10 HIKES & PLACES TO VISIT IN BANFF NATIONAL PARK, CANADA

Located downtown Banff, Fox Hotel and Suites is within walking distance to all the main dining and hot spots. What sets Fox Hotel and Suites apart from other hotels in Banff is the large hot pool modeled after the Cave & Basin hot pools.

The original Cave & Basin was Canadas first national park. We had a two-bedroom suite that echoed the perfect ski lodge setting. For roadhouse dining, we ate at Chilis Restaurant located in the lobby. When youve had a busy day of adventures in Banff, sometimes a quick meal at the hotel restaurant is in order. Staying in Banff is really like being in the thick of things. The main street of Banff iscalled Banff Avenue, a scenic street that leads your eye straight to Tunnel Mountain.Restaurants and outdoors shops abound, and the food here is magnificent if a tad pricy. Its the best place to stay in Banff for first-time visitors thanks to its convenientlocation, connection for tours and transit, and a great place to end the day.

Here are the pros and cons of staying in Banff.

Here are the best things about staying in Banff:

  • Stunning views and mountain town vibes
  • Loads of delicious places to eat
  • Connection for tours and transit throughout the park
  • Hotel can provide you with parking

The cons are more or less the expensive price, and the fact that restaurants in Banffcan charge quite a bit. But from an experience perspective, this is probably where you want to be.

Best hotels in Banff

Here are the best mid-range hotels in terms of cost with the most enthusiastic reviews in Banff:

Storm Mountain Lodge Banff National Park

For the truly romantic getaway in Banff, Storm Mountain Lodge is our top choice. Guests stay in private cabins ranging in size for couples to families with a spectacular view of Storm Mountain.

The lodge was originally built as a way for the Canadian Pacific Railway to attract more tourists to the Rocky Mountains in 1922. Eight log cabins are still used by guests today. Storm Mountain Lodge is completely self-sufficient with water, power, and sewer creating a sustainable green environment.

Our cabin had a fireplace and sofa where we sipped wine reminiscing about our day before dining at their all Canadian menu. Its fine dining in a forest setting, nothing could be more superb. Its a bit away from it all and that is exactly the way we like it. Check out prices at The Storm Mountain Lodge on Trip Advisor

Day 1 / Stop 5 Moraine Lake

  • Why its awesome: A stunning, isolated turquoise lake with smaller crowds than Lake Louise
  • Food nearby: There are no restaurants at Moraine Lake fuel up in Lake Louise or bring a picnic

A left turn at Lake Louise, followed by an easy 20-minute drive, will take you to a different mountain lake, wedged in a picturesque glacial gorge.

Perhaps even more enchanting than Louise Lake, Moraine Lake shares the vibrant turquoise color of its well-known neighbor. At Moraine Lake, the tourist crowds are replaced with empty Canadian landscape, which makes for a more peaceful and personal experience.

Much like at Lake Louise, the scenery at Moraine Lake varies greatly between the seasons. In the summer, the water is liquid and turquoise, wrapped in a forest of green. In winter it hardens to ice, bordered by snow-capped evergreens and a blanketed white terrain.

The area is certainly more suited to a summer visit, but it does offer spectacular cross-country skiing in the winter. If your trip to Banff is in the warmer months, we recommend you canoe or kayak across the glassy water of the Lake! Short of a swim in the icy glacial waters, nothing immerses you in the lakes beauty quite as much as paddling across its surface.

Moraine Lake is certainly one of our favorite places to visit in Banff, and a must-add to any Banff trip itinerary.

5 Star Luxury Hotels in Banff

In 1883, three Canadian Pacific Railway workers discovered natural mineral hot springs on Sulphur Mountain. This historical discovery not only led to the creation of Banff National Park, but it gave rise to the creation of the two 5-star luxury hotels in Banff which, by no-coincidence, are both located on the slopes of Sulphur Mountain near the mineral hot springs.

Calgary Best For Single

The closest city and airport to Banff National Park is in Calgary, Alberta. It might betempting to look for accommodation in Calgary once you see how expensive Banff can be,but its important to realize how much driving staying in Calgary adds to your daily travels:

  • Calgary to Banff town: 1.5 hours one way
  • Calgary to Lake Louise: 2 hours one way
  • Calgary to Athabasca Glacier: 3 hours 40 minutes one way

For that reason, I would only recommend staying in Calgary if you only have one day to see Banff, and only plan to see the sights in the southern part of the park

In my experience, visiting Lake Louise and Moraine Lake was already a full-day affair whenleaving from Canmore the two lakes which are arguably the highlight of thepark. Most hotels in Calgary are over the $100/night mark anyways, unless yourestaying somewhere like this Days Inn in Calgary.

Yes, you can visit Banff from Calgary. Banff is 100 km from Calgary and many people do day trips from Calgary. We recommend staying in Banff or one of the closer towns, but Calgary can be a good option too as it is a great city with plenty of things to do!

The Delta Hotel by Mariott was a great stay that was very central to downtown Calgary sites like the Calgary Tower and Chinatown. Our Luxurious room had a great view of the city. The newly renovated hotel has modern and chic rooms with lots of outlets for electronics. I loved the modern feel. Check out prices at the Delta Calgary TripAdvisor

Sundance Lodge Backcountry Banff

It may not be a typical hotel in Banff, but when visiting the National Park, you really need to get out to the backcountry at least once. Sundance Lodge is a cross-country ski or snowshoe in during the winter months, or a horseback ride or hike in the summertime.

The 10-room log cabin is nestled on the bend of Brewsters Creek in the valley of the Sundance Mountain Range. Located 16km from Banff, it takes you away from it all where you can truly get away from cell service, noise, and light pollution.

Canmore Coolest Neighbourhood In Town

***Lake Louise in summer (Banff, Alberta) by Carmen (@swissclick ...

A short twenty-minute drive outside of Banff is Canmore. This resort town is packed with great options for shopping, dining, drinking, and exploring. It is well-equipped to welcome travellers any time of year and boasts panoramic views of this stunning region.

Canmore also gets my vote for the coolest neighbourhood in Banff. Despite being larger than Banff town itself, Canmore is often overlooked by travellers. This helps it maintain its authentic feel and laid-back Canadian charm, while also allowing it to stay off the beaten path. Staying in Canmore, you can enjoy all the best bits of Banff without the throngs of tourists.

Day 1 / Stop 6 Icefields Parkway

  • Why its awesome: Considered one of the most beautiful drives on Earth, and a popular Banff road trip
  • Food nearby: Stop for a picnic with a view en route

Once youve enjoyed your lake explorations, itll be time to head towards Icefields Parkway. Strung between Lake Louise and the town of Jasper, this scenic stretch of road is considered amongst the most beautiful drives on the planet! The road boasts extraordinary mountain views and scenic surroundings, as well as a host of natural attractions and a pair of mountain passes.

If youre only spending a weekend in Banff or 3 days in Banff, you wont have time to drive the full length of the parkway, as its a few hours drive in either direction. But capturing a piece of the beauty is highly recommended!

A common way to experience a piece of the parkway from Lake Louise is to drive 40 minutes along it to Peyto Lake. Here, you can stop for a picnic with a view before turning around and heading back to Banff!

Insider Tip: If youre spending one week in Banff, you may choose to enjoy Icefields Parkway in its entirety! You can make a day out of it, or even stay overnight in Jasper when you get to the other side.
