Family Friendly Places To Stay In San Diego

Go Tiki With The Family While Staying In San Diego

Learn to Surf as a Family – One Bright Idea

Just 1.5 miles up the Mission Beach coast, the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is the bookend to the Bahia, but it adds a Tiki flavor to any San Diego family vacation. The Catamaran can make families feel like theyre thousands of miles away on a Polynesian island, with forest-like vegetation and even wildlife included.

Kids will enjoy watching the koi swim in the hotels ponds and admiring the resorts waterfall. But the star attractions might be Rita the cockatoo, Bianchi the macaw, and the other birds of the property, many of whom are quite vocal according to the property, Bianchi likes to do animal impressions. The birds depart for the day around 3:30 p.m., meaning no midnight squawking for those staying in one of the hotels tropical garden-facing rooms. Studios here also include full kitchenettes, and Bay Front rooms and suites open up directly onto the beach and the Mission Bay boardwalk.

Like its southern sibling, the Bahia Resort Hotel, the Catamaran also features an arcade, along with its family-hour cruise down Mission Bay. And its Mission Beach Boardwalk location is perfect for a Segway tour to check out the performers and local atmosphere.

Guide To San Diegos Best Restaurants

San Diego was once known as a culinary wasteland. That has changed and there are all kinds of dining options. Fun Diego Family is focused on discovering exciting places to eat that are family-friendly and will not break the budget. This is our guide to San Diegos Best Restaurants.

Upfront, we will say that Fun Diego Family is not the place to come if you are a foodie or looking for the latest trendy hotspot. Our focus is on hidden gems that may not show up in the tourist guides. We are also looking to go deeper into the many individual neighborhoods of San Diego City and County.

If you want the best information on top end San Diego restaurants, we recommend Eater San Diego. This site provides a regularly updated list of the 38 essential San Diego restaurants. They also have an ongoing list of the current hottest San Diego restaurants.

You will find that we cover some of the Eater San Diego restaurants. However, we are looking to go beyond that list. Fun Diego Family is focused on more of the family-friendly options. We are also focused on crowd-pleasing food like pizza, hamburgers, sandwiches, cheesesteaks, and, of course, Mexican food.

In the case of the top restaurants on Eater San Diego, many we have not yet visited. Others we have visited but consider over-rated. We do not cover the ones we feel are over-rated because in many cases we only have made one visit. However, if you have a question about a specific restaurant please let us know.

Old Town / Mission Valley Great Area For Sightseeing

Are you looking for a place to stay in San Diego that lets you savor the atmosphere of the past? If so, then the Old Town / Mission Valley area is the place for you to be.

Much of Old Town resembles a living history museum with plenty of graceful old architecture and museums.

People flock to the neighborhood to see sites like the Whaley House, alleged by many to be the most haunted house in America. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, youll be fascinated by the structures history.

It was not only a family home but also the citys first commercial theater, the county courthouse, a general store and much more.

Another major attraction is the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Within the confines of the park, visitors experience life as it was lived in the middle of the 19th century.

An historic plaza plus buildings such as La Casa de Estudillo, a Wells Fargo History Museum, the Old Town Theatre and much more await visitors.

Old Town also is a fabulous place to enjoy a bite to eat. Restaurants serving authentic Mexican cuisine abound, and this further is the best place to experience tequila.

Plenty of shopping experiences can be had here too whether youre looking for candy, want to try dipping your own candles or pick up some handcrafted trinkets.

Like Old Town, Mission Valley is just a few minutes from the San Diego International Airport.

What Baby Gear Do These San Diego Family Hotels Offer

Best Things to do in San Diego With Kids

The type of baby gear you can request depends on the hotel and isnt often mentioned on their website. The family hotels in San Diego on this list that I work with all provide complimentary cribs or Pack N Plays.

One common question that I receive is about refrigeration for breast milk. Most in-room hotel mini-refrigerators are not cold enough to preserve it properly as they are designed to keep drinks cold. Some parents arent picky about this, but I can tell you that Fairmont Grand Del Mar, for example, will happily refrigerate it in their kitchens. If you ask, other higher-end San Diego resorts for kids can likely do the same.

If your child relies on napping in a swing or if you require specific gear, you can rent it from Toddlers Travel . You can pick it up at their warehouse near the airport, they can meet you at the airport Car Rental Center, or they can deliver to your hotel or vacation rental.

While the famous Hotel Del Coronado undergoes a $200 million renovation next door, the sister property Beach Village at the Del offers family experiences that satisfy both kids and adults.

As the name would indicate, the Village is situated right at the edge of Coronado Beach, which is consistently rated as one of the top beaches in America. The resort leans into its location with boat rentals and beach games for the family to enjoy, along with special kid-friendly activities based around the season , such as beachside movies during warmer months and smores toasting in the fall and winter.

In addition, guests of the Village have access to the facilities of the Hotel Del Coronado, most of which are unaffected by the resorts renovations, meaning that families can utilize the Delventure âkids club with activities for the young ones each evening â freeing adults up to enjoy a nice meal on their own.

Downtown Where To Stay In San Diego For First Time

San Diegos downtown district is a short car ride away from the airport. At once hip, glamorous and laid-back, downtown is a great place to book a hotel stay.

Thats not only because the neighborhood boasts numerous transportation options but also because theres a ton to see and do.

Downtown features diverse cant-miss attractions like The New Childrens Museum and the This also is the place where its possible to shop your way through 14 acres of stores at upscale Seaport Village or take in a San Diego Padres game at Petco Park.

Whether you choose to stroll along Waterfront Park or raise a glass at the Mission Brewery, youll always find plenty to do.

In fact, this is a fantastic place to stay if youre hoping to enjoy some nightlife. Downtown features a huge collection of bars, lounges and clubs that are buzzing every night.

Overall, downtown is a safe place to stay and play. San Diego knows how important their downtown district is to commerce and tourists. Consequently, the neighborhood is patrolled by police to ensure that the streets are safe for locals and visitors.

Ocean Beach: Best Place To Stay In San Diego For Beach Lovers

Things to do in San Diego with kids. Some of our favorite ...

Ocean Beach, or OB as its known to locals, is a beautiful bohemian beach neighborhood. It is the most low key of all the seaside areas in San Diego, which is why its my top pick for a beachside stay.

Ocean Beach is a bohemian paradise, full of eccentric attractions and a vibrant town center. You can fish from the pier without a license, free of charge. Ocean Beach Pier is one of the longest piers in the West Coast, perfect for fishing, and also a great spot to see sea lions. There is also a Farmers Market every Wednesday with a bounty of amazing produce grown in the areas just outside of the city. One of my favorite things to do is to go to Sunset Cliffs and find a lovely spot to sit and watch the sunset over the ocean. There is often a combination of tourists and locals up there to see the sunset, but you should be able to find a spot to plop down, no problem.

The other popular beachfront areas in San Diego are Mission Beach and Pacific Beach.

Pacific Beach is popular for nightlife, especially among the twenty-something, bar-hopping crowd. While it is great for a night out, it can be a little loud to stay in unless youre interested in San Diegos nightlife. If you are, then definitely stay near Garnet Ave.

Pros and Cons of Staying in Ocean Beach

Cons:

  • Like North Park, the hotel options are pretty limited. There are a couple of spots, which youll find below, but vacation rentals are your best bet here.
