Central City And Black Hawk
Distance from Denver: 38 miles/45 minutes
Central City may look like just another pretty historic mountain town, but there is something that sets it apart behind those historic facades are casinos!
Its a bit more obvious in neighboring Black Hawk with its modern multi-story buildings, but even Black Hawk has a couple of casinos housed in historic buildings too.
Gambling was legalized in Central City and Black Hawk in the 1990s in a last-ditch attempt to save these dying former mining towns, and between them, they now have 24 casinos. The plan worked!
Even if you arent into gambling its not something I do often its still worth a visit for the novelty factor, and to hit up one of the buffets.
These twin towns are easily accessible from Denver there are even shuttles that run from Lakewood, on the light rail from central Denver. The latest one comes back just after 2 am so if you want to party, Central City and Black Hawk are the best mountain towns near Denver for you!
Where to Stay in Central City: Denver West/Central City KOA for camping. For hotels, Century Casino and Hotel in Central City or Ameristar Casino in Black Hawk. For vacation homes, this cozy home with deck and mountain views is a great pick.
Where to Eat in Central City:Farmers Pick Cafe at Isle Casino in Black Hawk, The Timberline Grill Steakhouse for steaks, and locally-inspired mains.
Where to Drink in Central City: Dostal Alley Saloon for craft beer and slots, or the Gold Coin Saloon.
Best Denver Hotel For History: Oxford Hotel
17th Street, Denver, CO
In May, we went down to Denver for the Taylor Swift Reputation tour. The city was busy but we managed to find a fun downtown property. One that tied in to our plans to also visit the Molly Brown House. The Oxford Hotel opened its doors in 1891. Located close to downtown landmarks including Union Station, Coors Field and Larimer Square, the location is near some of the best restaurants, bars, and attractions in the city.
As a bonus the bow-tied doorman, authentic art and furnishings in the lobby greeted us with the grandeur of what you would expect from a historic hotel. A little yellow bird at the front desk and an antique typewriter on the stair landing adds to the historic ambiance. It was such a charming hotel that made us feel as though we had stepped back in time.

Best Hotel In Breckenridge: Beaver Run Resort
This resort is perfect for travellers looking to enjoy all of the outdoor adventures Breckenridge has to offer. It has a swimming pool, tennis courts, and snow bunnies can sky in/ski out. You can even rent skis onsite if you dont have your own. The rooms are stylish and incredibly comfortable.
Discover Pikes Peak And The Garden Of The Gods
A couple more things to do near Denver that you should consider are visiting Pikes Peak and the Gardens of the Gods, both of which are near Colorado Springs, to the south of Denver. Although separate areas, the Garden of the Gods provides a tremendous opportunity to take in a gorgeous view of Pikes Pike.
Within the Garden of the Gods is an impressive group of picturesque red rock formations and a nice collection of hiking trails. In fact, it has such a reputation that TripAdvisor named it the nation’s best park, ahead of runner-up Central Park in New York.
Meanwhile, Pikes Peak has an elevation of 14,115 feet and is the highest point in the United States from it to the east. One memorable and comfortable way to climb it is taking a guided tour via the Pikes Peak Highway.

Staying at or near the airport, located about 30 minutes east of downtown Denver, can be very convenient when you have an early flight to catch or arrive in the Mile High City late at night.
Denver International Airport has a hotel attached right to its central terminal. The Westin Denver International Airport is shaped like a glass ship and is a classy affair. The 500 plus rooms and suites feature wall-to-wall windows and either terminal or mountain views. They also come with Westins signature Heavenly beds and bath products. There is a restaurant on-site, as well as an indoor swimming pool, hot tub, and fitness center. If you are traveling with a pet, the hotel is dog friendly.
The Westin is the only hotel on the airport grounds. All the rest are about six miles away . The Baymont by Wyndham Denver International Airport is one such option. It offers clean and comfortable rooms and free airport transport. Kids stay free. Breakfast is also complimentary.
