Neighborhood To Avoid Athens: Omonia

Where To Stay in Athens Greece in 2022 – Best Areas, Hotels, & Views

Omonia is one of the liveliest areas in central Athens. It is in this area that you can find the market, good traditional taverns, bars and many shops.

It is therefore a tourist district that it is pleasant to discover during the day. On the other hand, in the evening and at night, it is the territory of drug addicts, prostitutes and petty criminals. Budget Hotels In Psirri

  • Pella In Hostel: This is one great budget accommodation option in Athens with a central position, close to all the best neighborhoods in town. This hostel also boasts a nicerooftopp bar enjoying Acropoliss views. Accommodation types range from private rooms to single beds, with or without a shared bathroom.
  • BED in Athens: This is a great place to stay in the heart of Psirri. Featuring room service, this property also provides a terrace, free WiFi, and fantastic desk space, ideal for digital nomads and people who also work when on holidays!
  • Safestay Athens: Great budget accommodation in Psirri. The hotel also features a computer place in the basement lounge and a smallrooftopp restaurant for great romantic dinners. Its within walking distance to different bars, restaurants, and nightclubs.

Things To See In Metaxourgeio

National Archaeological Museum The world-renowned museum displays artifacts from as early as 7000 B.C. Highlights include rare bronze statues, the Mask of Agamemnon, and Classic-period sculptures.

Avdi Square Park-like square, especially lively in the evening. Visit some of my favorite Athens cafe/bars and restaurants that are located on the perimeter.

Gazi A lively, hip nightclub and bar area. A modern conversion of a 19th century gas plant known as the Technopolis is located here.

The Technololis hosts cultural events, a weekly artisan market, and a museum. Its staged with red and purple lights at night.

Exarchia This is an edgy counterculturist neighborhood. It has a long history of clashes with the police and is full of graffiti and street art. Although it is disruptive for police to enter this area, it is generally very safe for everyone else.

Though not officially designated a two star hotel, A is for Athens has prices in that range during certain seasons and a variety of rooms and suites. I would probably call it a B-category and give it extra points for it’s cafe bar and amazing views and location. Right next to Monastiraki Metro Station, Afor Athens features a rooftop bar with a stunning view of the Acropolis. Nightlife districts of Psirri, Monastiraki and Plaka are a 5 minute walk away though really the hotel is right in the spot where all three neighborhoods converge.. Wi-Fi is free in the entire property. Guests can eat breakfast on the panoramicterrace with Acropolis views. The rooftop bar is open until the early morning hours serving refreshments and cocktails. Best Hotels Near The Airport

If you have a late night flight or youre about to drop off a rented car, maybe staying close to the airport would be the best decision for you. Regardless of your reasons, I found three awesome hotels located as close to Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport as possible. Actually, all of them are apartments or guesthouses, but theyre great for your stay nevertheless!

Heres where to stay in Athens near the airport:

  • Dinas House Heres my recommendation for luxury travelers who want to be as close to the airport as possible, as this awesome villa is only 4km from the airport. I definitely recommend it for a group of up to 5 people ? Its spacious, super clean and very nicely decorated!
  • Villa Vravrona Tower & Suites If youre looking for a middle-priced accommodation instead, know that this villa is pretty close 4km from the airport. They also offer an airport shuttle if you want, which I think is a great bonus!
  • Elegant & Cozy Apartment in Artemida If youre on a budget, no worries, I found this great Athens airport accommodation that really has an extremely good price! Plus, its also very close to the airport only 2.5 km away from the terminals and it can host up to 6 people. Awesome, right?

Dont Leave Your Stuff Unattended

Never leave your stuff unattended even to go to the bathroom. Ask an employee to watch your stuff .

Its tempting to leave your bag a few feet from you or your cell phone casually on the table. But try not to ever be in a situation where someone could run up and grab your stuff. I like to sit with my bag wrapped around my chair leg when Im sitting outside.

You cant be one hundred percent theft-proof out in public. But your goal is to look like the person who would be the most difficult to rob so that pickpockets and petty thieves move on to easier targets.

Where Should You Not Stay In Athens

While Athens is a pretty safe city, there are a few areas you should better avoid to stay in 2022 Omonia, Exarcheia, Victoria, Metaxourgeio, and Gazi.

Although close to the historic center, most of these areas have deteriorated significantly in recent years. If your budget permits, avoid them they are not ideal for returning at night.

Now, if you have already booked your stay there, there is no need to panic.

Even these areas remain safe, as long as you pay a little more attention.

As you would in any city, avoid the dark alleys and sketchy guys, and you wont have a problem.

Best Athens neighbourhoods for visitors

Athens is a large sprawling metropolis of almost 4 million people across 7 main districts and one of the oldest cities in the world.

The Historic Centre is located in the centre of the city and is 33 kilometres from the Airport and 12 kilometres from the main port, Piraeus.

Unsurprisingly the Historic Centre is centred around The Acropolis which rises up in the middle of the city in all its glory.

Visitors can stay comfortably at any of the neighbourhoods that surround The Acropolis as these areas are relatively flat, close together and easy to explore on foot.

The neighbourhoods to the North are the most popular as they are also very close to many of the other ancient sites and Athens attractions. It takes 20 minutes to walk to the Acropolis from Kolonaki, Psyri or Gazi and 10-15 for most of the others on this map.
