Where To Stay In Florence: The 4 Best Areas To Stay

Often described as a living museum, Florence is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities in all of Italy. The city is an unparalleled hub of striking Renaissance architecture and world-class museums and galleries. From climbing the dome of the impressive Duomo to visiting Michelangelos Statue of David, there are countless fantastic things to do in Florence.

But while most people have an idea of the citys main attractions, deciding where to stay in Florence especially as a first time visitor can be a little more difficult.

Florence is a small city, with most of the major landmarks condensed into the compact historic city center. This is why 3 days in Florence is easily enough time to explore all of the citys main sites. However, when it comes to deciding on the best areas to stay in Florence, theres a lot more choice than you might initially think.

Do you stay in the Centro Storico close to the attractions but surrounded by crowds of tourists? Should you base yourself near the train station? Or perhaps you should cross over the river to the more local neighborhoods of Florence?

In this guide, well run you through the best places to stay in Florence, starting with an outline of the different areas to stay in Florence pros and cons, neighborhood highlights then narrowing it down to some of our favorite hotels and vacation rentals.

Staying In Florence But Outside Of The Center

WHERE TO STAY IN FLORENCE, ITALY | NEAR DUOMO | Joy Hotel Florence | Black Women Abroad

You can also opt to stay out of the historical center for various reasons. The main advantage would be to your wallet as it can definitely cost less per night to sleep outside of the historical center. Another very good reason I’d recommend staying out of the center if you would prefer a highly residential area where you can experience the daily life of local Florentines or if you arrive to Florence with a car. Since the historical center is off-limits to anyone without a permit, I highly recommend parking the car outside the center and forgetting about it but if you stay outside of the center, the car will definitely be more accessible if you want to use Florence as your base to visit other areas of Tuscany on day trips. A B& B or hotel outside the center might offer private parking in addition to the street parking available in the area so that is another plus.

Also depending on where you stay you might not be that far out of the center: if you stay right outside of the ring road that surrounds the center in Piazza Beccaria or near Piazzale Michelangelo, for example, you are still only about 15-20 min walking distance from the Duomo!

Here is a selection of lodgings in the areas outside of the center that I’d recommend staying in, without being too far away from all of the sights:

Boboli& san Miniato Al Monte

Boboli & San Miniato al Monte are green, upscale residential neighborhoods, sandwiched between Santo Spirito to the west and San Niccolò to the east, and extending south. They are restful, full of lovely views, and can feel much further out of the city than they are. The key attraction here is the grand Palazzo Pitti with its clutch of museums and the green space of Giardino Boboli behind it. You will likely leave to go shopping or eat out, but its a pretty area for wandering, with villas set on hills, capped by San Miniato and one of the most beautiful churches in town. Accommodation includes pretty guesthouses and some lovely luxury hotels.

Where To Stay In Duomo

When you are a first time visitor to Florence, you will definitely want to stay in the Duomo neighborhood. This is where many of the historical monuments and fantastic architecture can be found. It is home to the Florence Cathedral, also called Duomo, and is the most significant and recognizable building in the entire city.

The neighborhood is home to several landmarks such as the Museo Nazionale del Bargello with its Italian Renaissance sculptures and the Battistero di San Giovanni. It is the Historic City Centre where most of the action can be found. This neighborhood is one of the most crowded, with congested streets and busy attractions, but being the pulse of the city, it is arguably the coolest neighborhood in Florence.

With several wonderful bars, nightclubs, and restaurants, you will want to stay in this neighborhood when you are here with friends or your significant other and want to be right in the middle of things. Things are pricier here than in other neighborhoods because of the high demand for lodging and eateries but worth every penny.

You can still find a few moderately priced boutique hotels in the area and you can find a clean, friendly hostel in the heart of Florence in the Duomo neighborhood. But these do need to be booked several months in advance, otherwise, you will be paying a premium price for one of the higher-end hotels.

San Giovanni Best Area To Stay In Florence First Time

What is the best area to stay in Florence for first-time visitor?

The best area to stay in Florence is the San Giovanni district. This is the area around the famous Duomo. Here youll find the most popular tourist sites, including Uffizi Gallery, Galleria dellAccademia and Palazzo Vecchio. San Giovanni is also the best place to stay in Florence for first-time visitors.

San Giovanni is the heart of historic Florence, where the magnificent Duomo and Piazza della Signoria are. The neighbourhood takes its name from the famous Baptistery of San Giovanni, opposite the Duomo. In fact, its a small area concentrated with historic sights, art galleries, cobblestone streets and authentic trattorias.

If you cant find affordable accommodation in San Giovanni, the Santa Croce district is a very good second option. Santa Croce is located within the yellow ring east of San Giovanni.

Staying in Santa Croce will put you at walking distance from the major tourist attractions. In addition, youll find lovely little trattorias and many leather shops in the area. The only disadvantage in comparison to San Giovanni is that the train station is a little further away .

In general, try to choose a hotel in the area within the yellow ring and north of Arno River. There are many affordable hotels in the area and youd be near the attractions.

Santa Maria Novella: Best Place To Stay In Florence For Families

The Santa Maria Novella neighbourhood stretches along the bank of the Arno River and is quite a varied area. It houses the citys main train station, the Stazione di Santa Maria Novella, making the area well-connected to other parts of Florence.

While the area closest to the train station is the most easily accessible, its also the slightly rougher part of the neighbourhood.

I recommend heading a little further away from the station, where youll find a pleasant and quieter residential area.

Santa Maria Novellas calm and posh residential neighbourhood with its wide paved streets is ideal for a family stay. The area is quiet but also central enough for easy trips to Florences main attractions.

This neighbourhood takes its name from the Gothic-style Santa Maria Novella church. Besides this iconic site, you can also visit the worlds oldest Pharmacy and the Parco delle Cascine in this region.

The historical park is very green and spaciousperfect for a family outing, especially if youre visiting Italy in summer or spring.
